Well I'm in two minds.

On the one hand procedures are put in place usually because such procedures have been proven in the past or as the result of similar situations worsening due to rescue attempts. Therefore the 'have a go hero' as they are sometimes termed could have gotten into trouble themselves or further endangered the stranded person.

Most likely the authorities just don't like to be made to look irrelevant. They should, when things work out well, not dwell on the what ifs.

Can't wait to see if the charges get laughed out of court or if the sheriff gets a medal for "procedural correctness".

You do have very odd things happen in your area, Steven.

Perhaps the oddness vector is what is making it hard for you to find someone?

I am so happy to see they are cracking down on criminals such as these.  Save a 13 yo kid?  Gawd, next they will be taking up money for some kid to get an operation they need or something.  Maybe delivering food to the hungry.

Stop the madness!

Hmmm. The girl was on land and in communication with S&R, not in danger of drowning. They were setting up their ropes etc when the river guide took it upon himself (after being told not to enter the rushing river) to swim over to her. Which means S&R now have 2 people they have to transfer.

If she were still in the water, if she hadn't yet been spotted or in communication with S&R then I'd feel differently about the guide. As it stands I can't help but wonder if his quest for adrenaline charged living is what pushed him into an unneeded rescue.

Let's see.....
HIS raft capsized and threw her off. She swam to a safe place on land and was stranded there. He could not find her for 30-45 minutes so he called the authorities to locate her. They located her and told him where she was stranded and told him do not to try to go to her. He went to that location anyway, jumped out of his raft and swam to her. HE DID NOT RESCUE HER, but instead stranded 2 people instead of just 1. He said he did this NOT because she needed saving, but because he felt that needed to "make contact" with her as soon as possible. Who exactly was he helping? He didn't do a thing that helped the girl and he certainly didn't help authorities who still had to rescue her and then rescue him too.

At first I sided with the guide. I have changed my mind rather quickly. He should have listened to the rescue team and stayed put.

Was the story edited after you posted the link?  I ask because there was nothing in what I read that said she was either safe or on land.  It said she was "stranded" and "by the side of the river".  I actually pictured her clinging to a log or a rock or something, not necessarily safe or on land.

Cali deep within the comments more information came out from some people that had actually been there.

Arrest.

OMG, this was similiar to something that happened yesterday!
My ambulance crew & I were staffing a Horse Show in a very remote area. I had a County radio w/me & we heard a dispatch go out for a bicyclist down about 1/2 mile away from where we were. We went to go check on the bicyclist when we were told NOT to leave the premises. We were there for the Horse Show event & the bystanders, not for outside calls. There were so many people trying to override the other that I thought I was told to cancel the responding unit because it was over 10 minutes away so I did.
Turns out they did not want me to cancel the unit so they were re-dispatched so of course that delayed the response time[&o]

ALOT of "conversing" took place & my crew ended up taking a personal vehicle to stabilize & assess the patient. It was a compound fracture of the arm which is not in itself life threatening but they said when they returned the patient was starting to become "shocky" which is of course life threatening.

During their time away from the event, I was still at the event w/the ambulance but on the cell phone & communications radio w/several officers. In a nutshell the final say was that what we did was appropriate because we're supposed to be available for the WHOLE community, not just a select few.

My main problem was that the powers that be were not concerned about a potential trauma patient in a remote area. Granted it wasn't a trauma but we didn't know the patient's status. Sure, we're there to help you IN CASE folks at the event needed us but there was a DEFINITE need less than a mile away & they wouldn't let us take the ambulance.[8|]
