Ok so I can build a fire and cook over it. I can pitch a tent. I can tie just about any knot there is... I can find my way anywhere. I can stop bleeding and preform CPR I can cook, sew, clean, decorate, and organize I can manage one person or a dozen. I can't sing, but I can dance. I can write (well, I'm told.) I can paint. I can act. So why can't I hammer a bloody nail in straight to save my life?

Its the nail fault. They keep moving about when they feel the head of the hammer when its approaching. I let the pros to the work...if they wear those tank top shirts...sweat glistening on their muscles cold shower time...

I was told to use my arm and not my wrist - that helped a lot.

Hold the nail close to the head with a pair of needle-nose pliers. If you don't have them, or don't know what they are, insert the nail between the teeth of the comb and use that to hold it. Since you're inexperienced, don't try big hammer swings. Start with little taps. Cali

Is it a type of hardwood? If so, even the best have problems driving nails into it. Can you use a drill and drill bit? If so, select a bit with a slightly smaller diameter than the nail you want to drive and pre-drill a hole where you want the nail to go. It makes driving a nail much easier, especially in hardwood.

Maybe you have a knot under the surface. Do you have a drill? Make a leading hole - MUCH smaller than diameter of the nail. Neighbor might have such a drill for a 5-minute loan. Sounds like it's a repair. Yes? Nail larger than before? Existing hole? Is the "rolling table" moving on you? Can you get the nail started with teeny, tiny strokes? Maybe 1/4 inch in before the big WHACK? Are there screws at other, similar places in table? If so, back one out and go get IDENTICAL one. Hope these few ideas help.

Alot of people have challenges in getting nailed straight and proper. Like Cali mentioned, using a clasping tool to grasp the shaft and use short, rapid strokes to get the hole started, once it's in a little bit, you can use harder longer strokes until the nail is all the way in.

Wow. Thanks for all the advice everyone. Cali, your needle nose pliers tip did the trick. However, the wood split (sorry, igor no idea what kind of wood it is. I captured the cart from others who were moving out years ago) so Lance, next time I will try the drill trick. It's a very sturdy old cart but the top supports are coming loose. I want to reinforce them and put a new top on it to hold my tv in my new apartment. Thanks again.

I once was told to imagine the head of the nail as the head of someone you are really upset at and then you will hit it straigt every time. Lol Works for me!
