Although I can't really stand to drink the stuff on it's own, I am fanatical about clean water and so filter all my water or at least boil it for coffee, my usual method of drinking the stuff. But of water, I do possess devices for the mobile cleaning of water, a water filter, the MSR miniworks, and a water purifier, the Pre-Mac Travel Well Trekker, the later being issue with the British Armed forces, but what it does to water though making it potable, it is real yukky in taste due to the iodine. I use the MSR for UK use, and the Pre Mac for world travel use. But an interesting website, TED.com a very inspiring video of a seminar by UK inventor Michael Pritchard which speaks volumes about world disease prevention and water supply issues by a very simple device he has designed and with it the mathematics to prove it is a far better option to send his invention to areas where water is a problem than sending bottles of water which pose logistical problems due to weight and fragility of containment Also, it kind of alarmed me to find out that during Hurricane Katrina the American authorities in it's own country stuffed up so badly that it took five days to get potable water to some of the victims, compare that with the aid response to other countries that suffer similar and worse disasters. Perhaps everyone needs to get one of these, as it has been proved central authority can't be trusted to perform in times of need and support their distribution to areas of the world where clean water to avoid disease is desperately needed.

A big part of getting supplies to those who needed them after Katrine was that huge amount of infrastructure damage. Roads were non existant in some areas. I was sent there to replace phone lines and couldn't get to where we had to go.

Well I say blame the State of Lousiana and the Mayor of New orleans for most of the issues fema did exactly what it was supposed to do on the timetable its supposed to do it in. The major reason why so many people were trapped is very bad city planning. There was no tree list or plan to evacuate the city in case something happened. Also while I agree most people need what you suggest how are most people to afford it.

Speaking from personal experience, back when Hurricane Andrew tore up the East Coast of the U.S. I was driving trucks, and the company I worked for sent me from Baltimore Md. empty up to Guelph, and then Aberfoyle Ontario Canada for bottled water. I then drove the water back to Ft. Eustis in Virginia, and upon arrival, sat in my truck, along with 500 other drivers, on the helicopter landing pad, for 7 days until FEMA could figure out where to deliver the water. I wasn't complaining thou, I was making very good money to lay in my bunk and watch dvd's[;)] Gotta love government contracts.

But what is the total sum of funding the unnaffected west spends on aid to the countries concerned, I bet it is a lot, probably more than the UK alone. Give the buggers water filters and tell them to find their own water, not ship it in at a kilo a litre. But hang on, somewhere in this is corporate interest, there has got to be to warrant such sums being thrown out of the country each year in pursuit of nothing really much happening.

As to where lots of people or even people for that matter are located, well, anything not under water would be a good guess and that, public meeting places for the same reason. Given it took five days for water to reach the stricken people at the superbowl, just exactly what was the problem there, or was it trigger fingers and looters were more fun.

If we are spending money, we might as well spend it in the right places, as who knows, rid or reduce death and disease due to unpotable, but necessary water and we might actually see a reduction in the money that needs to spent overseas. Who knows even, if people actually stop dying from the basic stuff they need to live by, they might even find something useful to do, like an industry and an economy, as it strikes me as if one is trying to actually survive, the last thing on their minds is the economy. Ooo, hang on a minute, who is it that benefits most from industry and commerce, banks possibly, then they should stimulate an economy by providing the necessities to sustain life, so that they might reap the dividends later, oh, but I forgot, banks aren't interested in long term investment, they want it now, quick profit, so that leaves us and our governments to ease our conscience.

There are ways to go about this. 1.) A giant fresnel lens on a stand. Boils 12 ounces in less than 60 seconds. Add more water slowly. A mirrored parabolic dish boils water even faster. 2.) A simple and efficient biofuel stove. You can boil water with three sticks on fire. Little sticks. NO BIG FIRES. Save that wood. Just make sure the pot you are boiling the water in fits snug in the chamber. The heat accumulates under the pot and leaves in a chimney. 3.) The Solis (is that the right term?) Method involves taking water bottles of any size and placing them right on a black tin surface that has groves. That method takes 30 minute. Potable water is on my list of concerns for the impending apocalypse. It is not right that every time I flush a toilet others in africa are surviving on the same amount of water per day. ----- If we were a material obsessed society then we would not have the 'TRASH' that is everywhere on this PLANET. We should have respect for the air, earth, water, and fire. Mother nature is growing weary of caring for us with nothing in return. Just take it and use it.... toss it away into some la la land. Okay. I vented and feel better. I live fifteen feet away from a beautiful bay. Soon this beauty will be struck with sludge and sheen.
