If the preganancy is their only proof of fornication then preganancy is the reason for termination. (otherwise she could have claimed immaculate conception.)

My biggest problem with it is that policies against fornication have almost always been applied to women only. That goes all the way back to the Bible when a woman was brought to Jesus and accused of being caught "in the very act of adultery" and they wanted to stone her. If she had been caught in the very act of adultery, 2 people minimum should have been brought before Jesus.
If we allow women in this country to get discriminated against in the name of separation of church and state then we have no right to think the Taliban is wrong for murdering women in the name of their religious beliefs. Yes, there is a huge difference between firing and murdering, but the underlying issue is the same. Religious laws that unfairly discriminate against women.

The difference is that if this woman doesn't want to live a religious life she is free to live a secular one.

So are the women in Afghanistan. They are just discriminated against very harshly when they make that choice.  What is happening to women in that area is not a law, it is a religious custom. Granted their choice to not follow it could get them killed, but it is no less a choice.  Unchecked religious freedom turns radical. And we have enough problems with radical religions already.

I would probably have less problem with this if the school had polled every worker, male and female, about their sexual behavior and then did their firings accordingly.

Besides, you don't want sinners to start coming to the church.

They must be turned away. It's what Jesus would do.

Right?

Actually Jesus probably would not want sinners going to church.  After all the religious leaders plotted to kill Jesus when He went to church.

Being a Christian school, should they have the right to do this?

If this part is true...

" The letter, which Gay provided to AOL News, says that Hamilton agreed in her job application to uphold standards related to the school's values. "

Then yes, they can. One of the many reasons, it is very important to read everything you sign.

That said, I am not sure why they care. Unless she broadcast her condition while still being unmarried, how would the kids have even known.

Owner59 -> RE: Teacher fired for "fornification" (6/15/2010 8:31:18 AM)

Fire,shun,reject, shame...

That,is what this "school" is teaching it`s students.

I don`t care if they have the legal right to harm her,it`s wrong.Period.

There`s states in The Union where it`s legal to shoot your dog on a whim(if it`s your property). It`s still wrong.Fuck how legal it is.

xssve -> RE: Teacher fired for "fornification" (6/15/2010 9:22:27 AM)

If they are getting funding through "Faith Based" programs, they should be in compliance with EEOC.

tazzygirl -> RE: Teacher fired for "fornification" (6/15/2010 9:28:27 AM)

Most religious based schools still get federal funding as well.

This is a distinct repeat of the atheist-firing thread a while back.

It's not right in either case.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that anyone who takes a job teaching at a Christian school and is then surprised they are fired for acts that go against what the school stands for is probably not bright enough to be teaching kids.

This.

Not if there aren't any jobs. I know young teachers who look for years on end.

Religion, religion, religion -- when are people going to get tired of this shit? Can you honestly think of a better argument against humanity? Schools are all trashed to hell, but every fucking town has at least 20odd gigantic monuments to various shades of jack-squat-up-high. It's pathetic. The windows are stained from puke-- God's puke at the sight and smell of religion.

I was merely pointing out that fact. If you had read my other posts, im sure you read the part where i said if this isnt part of her contract, its wrong. If it is part of her contract, then she doesnt have a leg to stand on.

Not only that, but i also pointed out links from the EEOC web site showing how others in similar positions won lawsuits.

Just because a fact is pointed out doesnt mean someone is for or against something.

This isnt about religion, its about a teacher who was fired. her contract with the school will determine what happens next. Its now a legal matter, not a religious one.

Another good argument in favor of separation of church and state. The more churches are integrated into everyday life (some neighborhoods don't have decent schools or hospitals that aren't church run) the more you have situations like this one, where people don't really consider that they're getting involved in a religious activity, they just see it as a source of employment.

No, I know.

There perhaps wasn't as much tone in this post as you're reading -- I was just pointing out this is a repeat issue.

Separation of church and state is, at best, a temporary solution.

The hope (maybe even among our sacred founders) is that, one day, people will stop believing in imaginary men in the sky.

A bigger problem, maybe, is that oppressive types might just find another organization-head to oppress behind. Although, if society becomes less oppressive, so too will many if not most oppressors.

Fewer than if she humps bibles.

Okay, let's make it fair: I think that public schools should not hire teachers with religious backgrounds. What's my 'justification'? Instead of a morality clause, a logicality clause: anyone would honestly believes in an invisible guy in the sky obviously has faulty logic circuits, and isn't qualified to teach.

There. It's fair.

Oh, and no more funding or tax breaks for churches or religious schools for any reason whatsoever.

It's only fair.

Contracts that reference invisible sky men (or aliens, for that matter) are immediately invalidated under the law.
