The 5 companies sitting there made together over 288 billion dollars in profits(in the last 3 years),while spending only 20 million on response resources and equipment.

Less than one tenth of one percent, spent on response ,by oil companies. That`s just criminal.

BP said they could gather an Exxon Valdes worth of oil every day,....lie.

They said they had the capacity ti handle any spill,...lie.

So?  If the amount spent is adequate to do the job, so be it.

BP evidently was WAY worse than the others regarding safety.  No point in beating up the others...

And what is the freaking point in a Congressional grilling?  BP is responsible for destroying an ecosystem and killing eleven workers.  Negligent homicide.  Quit the play-acting and charge the top brass criminally.

Several things. First and most obvious - political grandstanding. Gives the politicians the chance to show the voters back home how hard they're beatin' up on those oil-gangsters for us.

Second, it gets the point across to the industry leaders that everything they say is about as on-the-record as they can get, and if they want to look good in the public eye by promising to follow the path of righteousness from this day forward, this is their chance. If you come clean and promise everyone you've learned your lesson, it's the best chance you're ever going to get at a fresh start.

And, third, public spectacles are expiatory. People do feel better after seeing the bad guys held accountable on live television. It's genuinely good for the public mood.

Fully agreed, but then again there's time. I say, use that time and collect as much evidence as you need. Nobody's going anywhere.

This is a vast overreaction. Exhibit A for instance - not one walrus harmed in any way whatever in the Gulf spill!

Meanwhile in the Niger Delta..............

The major US oil firms wouldnt have reacted any quicker, according to the congressional hearings. I am also wondering what will happen if Transocean or Halliburton are found to be at fault. I say this because it seems either the blow out preventer or the cementing was to blame.

It does look that way.
Mind you, if Transocean and Haliburton are more at fault, that could be why the American government is making a point of stressing that it's all BP's fault.

Moonhead it isnt BP any more, It`s British Petroleum donchaknow. Mind you, they will probably say Transocean is Swiss, now they are dodging paying taxes in the US.

Joe Barton is scum. People in Texas who voted for that dumb ass loser are idiots. What a waste of time listening to that turd. And yes they squirmed.

Why the fuck doesn’t Markey run for the senate!!!

BP is solely liable for financial damages, and it's up to them to go after the subcontractors to recover their losses. But if individual employees of either firm are found to have violated the law, they can certainly be charged.

They should rename it AP because 39% of shareholders are American and it apparently employs twice as many American workers than British workers.

I was watching ABC yesterday and it made me laugh when they said "Due to Carl-Henric Svanberg's bad English he failed to convey empathy."

They'll have to get a chav as a spokesman the next time they have a spill then.
