Maybe he is waiting till they plug the damn hole untill they start the clean-up. I wonder how the 20 minute meeting went this morning with BP officials ?

Duh.

We still have a gushing oil well, for starters....

Exactly.  Obama's not an oilman.  BP is the supposed expert in the field.  Matter of fact ALL the oil experts, when asked how to fix this mess say they don't have a clue.  Now why on earth would anyone want to "Drill Baby Drill", when you don't know how to control "Drill Baby Drill"?  Is it Obama's job to ensure people starting businesses are qualified to do the jobs they do?  I say he should regulate the fucking hell out of these oil companies!!

popeye1250 -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 11:47:07 AM)

It was very inappropriate that he tried to link "Cap and Trade" and "Green Energy" in with this.
We're nowhere near "Green Energy" yet and most of it would be too expensive to be viable now anyway. That's something to shoot for twenty years down the line.
And as for "Cap and Trade" sure, massive new taxes on energy will get this economy going won't it? It would slam us right into a depression!
Remember a few years ago when gasoline went to $4 a gallon? We fell right off a cliff! I went down to the local gas station to buy three (3) gallons of gas at about 8 pm one night and I was the only car out! It was eerie. It was like it was 4 o' clock in the morning! This place was a ghost town.
Restaurants and other businesses were down 40%!
This is no time to be talking about such foolishness as "Cap and Trade" that will never happen anyway, businesses would fold, the American People would revolt and instead of "Hoovervilles" there'd be "Obamavilles" all over the country.
He should have stayed "on message" and told us how things were going with plugging the leak, how the cleanup was going and what would be happening in the next few months and the next year. Everyone already knows that B.P. is "responsable."
We need a "manager" in the White House not a lawyer.

Lucylastic -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 11:47:28 AM)

He buys into the "Obama is the Messiah" business, if he cant part the water to the well, then magically make it dry up and restore the ecology to healthy in a month or two,  then he has no business running the country dontcha know

servantforuse -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 11:52:59 AM)

Obama said last night that he has been on top of this from day 1. No answers from him, just rhetoric.

Louve00 -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 11:57:29 AM)

Yep, Lucy.  Its either fix it now (even though the proprietor of this business can't control their own business!!) or you're not fit to be president.  Like I said, if he did it the Democratic way and regulated the hell out of the business...or worse, actually dictated to them what to do, the noise from the right would be even louder.  I've sooo turned a deaf ear to the illogical. [:)]

Members of this administration are on record saying "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste". And so in the minds of this president and his staff, he was on message last night.

If he doesn't have a plan to clean up the spill, he needs to stop braying about "how on top of it" he is. He can't have it both ways. If the federal government does not have the means or the ability to clean up this spill, he needs to just say so instead of constantly telling people he's in charge of making sure it gets cleaned up. The problem is the complete disconnect between the rhetoric and the reality.

The guy's an empty suit, spouting empty promises. I've completely had it with him. I'm done with Obama. It's reached the point where every time he comes on the television, I jump to change the channel. I've heard the same speech so many times, I've got it memorized. I don't need to hear it again.

Bullshit, both he and Thad Allen have said on more than one occasion exactly that.

The government does not have the expertise or the equipment which is why they have relied on BP.

And rightly so.  This is BP's mess, let BP clean it up.

I hate to say this but I wasn't inspired. I found it very predictable and what I really want is action. Unfortunately I got bored and changed the channel. Did he say anything about using the Navy, maybe using a submarine, or professionals in the military? Did he say anything about using all the resources of the other oil companies to create some synergy to be more effective? I will say however I would decline to have a beer with George Bush and prefer to have it with Obama.

Did he say anything about using other oil tankers to get the oil out of the water? Or how about
this:

QUOTE FROM OBAMA'S SPEECH:
We now have nearly 30,000 personnel who are working across four states to contain and cleanup the oil. Thousands of ships and other vessels are responding in the Gulf. And I have authorized the deployment of over 17,000 National Guard members along the coast. These servicemen and women are ready to help stop the oil from coming ashore, clean beaches, train response workers, or even help with processing claims - and I urge the governors in the affected states to activate these troops as soon as possible.

No, one member of the administration said that and his remark was taken out of context ever since.

What he was saying was a crisis can bring about needed change.

But you go ahead and enjoy yourself beating it into the ground.

housesub4you -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 12:25:02 PM)

So now you're screaming that this is the governments problem, so i guess all you small government Free market people only want the free market when it makes profits, but when the shit hits the fan or the oil can't be stopped, FUCK the free market it's the governments job.

Obama got 20 billion out of BP to start, the only thing the GOP has done is vote NO on raising the limit set in the 1990 from 75 million to 10 Billion, So he got double that and yet all they want is the government to stop the leak the FREE MARKET STARTED

Louve00 -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 12:47:49 PM)

Yep.  And I say, if you want the gov't to fix your problems, don't bitch about how gov't does that.  And in this situation, where gov't can't fix it cuz they don't know how (and by the way never claimed to be oil companies, for crying out loud), then don't bitch when the gov't sets regulations on how to run their businesses and how to ensure the safety of the country because of the workings of their businesses don't take responsibility of it, then don't complain about setting regulations and making things more expensive for big business.  Eat crow.

LadyCimarron -> RE: Thoughts on President Obama's first speech from Oval Office (6/16/2010 12:54:33 PM)

I agree, housesub.  They cried out that they did not want gov't interfering in business. Now when their sugar turned to shit they want the gov't to get them out of this mess. Well the gov't is helping but afterwards they need to regulate the shit out them.

"Never waste a good crisis" - Hillary Clinton

...President Obama explained in his Saturday radio and Internet address that there is "great opportunity in the midst of" the "great crisis" befalling America.

Popeye, I agree with you on the fact that, what President Obama wants as far as replacing oil with alternative sources of energy is not going to be widespread any time soon.

Most of us would love to have affordable and reliable " green energy".
We just have not perfected alternative and "green energy" enough at this time for it to be a major consideration.

I agree with President Obama in that we need to reduce our dependency on foreign oil,
but that still doesn't change the fact, that we NEED oil at this time.

Working on creating alternative energy and "green energy" is an area that I do want my tax money spent.
Funny we can put a man on the moon, we can do so many damn things, but it takes us months to stop a

huge oil leak and it is taking us years to create affordable alternative sources of "green energy".

Santa Baby, please give me a Nissan Electric Leaf for Christmas.
Around $2 to charge the car up?  I can go for that!

Sometimes when he starts talking about alternative sources of energy and widespread "green technology" and all these "green jobs", I feel like I need to find something green to smoke to believe him, if he thinks there is a real possibility of this happening any time soon.

I really think President Obama means well, but he comes across as being very idealistic which is fine, unless
you can't take off the "rainbow shades" and see reality.
President Obama really means well, his heart is in it, and I hope he is able to realize and accomplish his "vision" for our country.
