It's probably a bit morbid, but I should have a plan in place incase I die. You know, my last wishes, what I want done with my body, and my stuff.  And no, nobody worry, I'm not planning on offing myself, nor having someone else do it, but I should have something in place.

How would I go about doing that?

Yes.  There are websites that allow you to DL living trust forms, wills, etc.

As long as you are thinking about the future, something even more important than a will (for someone like you or I, who don't have much in the way of worldly goods) is a life insurance policy. Take out a term policy for ten to twenty thousand dollars; enough to cover final expenses, plus (maybe) a bit extra.

My bank notarizes client's documents for no to low cost. UPS stores often have notaries working for them, but their fees are a bit higher. (like about seven bucks or so.)

I'm trying to decide how I want my body to be dealt with, I know I want to be an organ donor, and every last bit of me that's usable, great use it please. After that I am thinking Donate me to Science, or cremate me. I want my funeral costs to be very cheap.

Yes,

Cancer, illness, and random death happen at any age. My mother did a will off of one of those sites. Wasnt too bad actually. Makes things a little tricky when you dont have a lawyer as executer though. If you have things, or WISHES you care to have followed - make sure you have some one like a lawyer to back up the will. Cos if you designate a family member, they may decide to edit your wishes. Like my brother. As he see's it, my mother is dead - who cares what she wants.

And it really is nicer if you list what you want to go to who or what done with it. We did pretty well, but it sucked just the same. Of cousre most people dont think they're going to die, so who ever really spells it all out? And if you suddenly become terminal....... well, I think you get so preoccupied with being terminal and trying not to be terminal that you really really dont want to think or believe that you are terminal. Hell my mother paid 4 G for a trip to the Greek Isles that was planned after her due date. I dont even know if we got the money back from that...... but point is. Once your terminal you Really (capital R) will not want to think about it.

For the love of yours - spell out your wills.

I know that when I set up my bank account, I was able to put a note in the files that should I die who I want the money to go to. And my parents have a lawyer, he's probably not that kind of lawyer though, but if he is maybe he could advise me.

most doctors have an Advanced Directive form, so please ask for one the next time you are there. This will state your wishes as to what can/cannot be done in the event you are unable to speak for yourself. It mainly is used for things such as ending life support.

And please make sure your doctor receives a copy.

Dying is expensive so, unless you have more than $6000. in there, it will probably all go to your expenses anyway, and that's assuming no hospital/medical bills. (plus any debts you have when you pass.) It's why I suggested you take out some life insurance. A term policy isn't very expensive, and is probably more important than estate planning an estate that won't have anything left.
If you have insurance though, then you're more likely to have something left to give away. (unless of course you have debts. All debts will be paid before any extra is distributed.) (the exception to this is an insurance policy; that goes directly to the beneficiary.)

TN has a form Advanced Directive for health care, it combines a living will and a health care power of attorney.  You can usually get it on the TN Department of Health website -- i think.  You can also check the Department of Health website, the Attorney General website, or i believe hospitals will probably be able to direct you to the government website in your State that has free forms.

You can also try doing a search for your State Advanced Directive.

Good luck.  angel

I'm not sure how much it cost my grandma to be cremated, but they went the very cheap rout, a plastic box and a no frills deal.  It was pretty cheap.

And if you got your body donated to science, what costs are there in that?

And I am hoping to live a debt free life and die debt free if I can. I know that's a very lofty goal, but a good one:)

I have heard of life insurance policies being only 18 cents a day, are those a good deal, or would it be a shoddy plan?

The will is primarily for assets. What you need more importantly is a durable power of attorney so people can make decisions if you aren't conscious. And a medical directive which allows someone else to decide not to resuscitate you or take other extraordinary measures.

If you leave a file saying what you want your funeral to be like, most people will honor your wishes. You want specific hymns sung, then list them.

Something else to consider would be pre-arranging your burial w/the funeral home yourself. Most people don't know that when they do this it's on a monthly payment plan & after you die the payments can contiue on the plan. However if you die w/o the arrangements in place your family has to pay everything up front.

I know you said you wanted to be creamated or donate your body to science, but this is for all those that want the full burial. You can also pre-plan your creamation if you're interested.

As for the donation of your remains...

If you own anything in your name alone and there are no beneficiaries named and if you're not married to your Master then I highly advise writing a will. Otherwise when you die there could be problems with any assets you own including a vehicle or even disposing of your body which could be contested without a will or being married.

I also suggest having an attorney writing one for you. Make sure it's witnessed and notarized. Check also with your state and county's legislation for any other details since this can be different state to state and even county to county.

edited to add: For the love of al that is holy, make sure whoever you name as executor knows where the original will is so they may retrieve it upon your death. A copy will cause huge huge headaches and most Register of Wills offices will NOT accept a copy.

Go spend some time at a hospice too.  There are some things you that are a shock to learn about - that maybe you should plan before you end up there.

Is it okay to let you starve whilst dying?  Do you want to be a hospice?  Can you set up 24 hr nursing care instead?  That sorta thing.  What exactly do you want to die from?  Your illness or w/e no one is doing that your body needs?
