LunarEclipse -> Lieberman proposes Internet control bill (6/18/2010 10:39:36 PM)

I'm surprised this issue hasn't been brought up on here. Isn't anyone the least bit worried about this new bill proposal?

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-20007418-38.html

Basically, the bill would give the president the power to "shut off" the Internet or portions of the Internet in an "emergency crisis". Supposedly this is to protect the American people from all those pesky cyber terrorists...

Just to keep things in perspective, Lune, the President already has the power to order the launch of over 5000 nuclear weapons.

I'm a free speech kind of guy, so I do find the potential for abuse troubling, but not sufficiently so to load the guns and put up a ham radio tower. I think there may well be a legitimate need for the powers provided, should a genuine crisis arise.

I agree with Rich (hey, why'd the room go suddenly silent?).

Real governments with real ability to launch real cyber threats are a real concern, from China on down. Pentagon and private experts alike paint some pretty dreary scenarios, all of them not far-fetched at all--our entire infrastructure runs on the Internet today. We have a generally lax cyber-security policy, and while I share concerns about abuse, addressing this is a real need.

I don't know; they could play politics with it like Bush did for 'National Security'

FTA
The bill would grant President Obama the power to declare a “national cyber-emergency” at his discretion and force private companies tied to the Web, including Internet service providers and search engines, to take action in response—moves that could include limiting or even cutting off their connections to the World Wide Web for up to 30 days.

While the bill’s sponsors say it is intended to create a shield to defend the United States and its largest companies from the growing threat of cyberattacks, civil-liberties activists tell The Daily Beast they fear the bill could give the White House the ability to effectively shut down portions of the Internet for reasons that could prove to be politically inspired.

Can Obama Shut Down the Internet? - The Daily Beast

A new bill rocketing through Congress would give the president sweeping powers to police the web for national security reasons. Could this be a way to block WikiLeaks?

Ken was absolutely right in his assertions in a previous thread about regulating the internet, another proposal. Where we differ is that I am against it because of the potential for abuse by incumbents. That is exactly what they accuse unfriendly governments of, like in Venezuela. But when "we" do it it is OK.

Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life here. (well OK present company excluded)

Somehow I think people will find a way around it.

DarwinsLilHelper -> RE: Lieberman proposes Internet control bill (6/19/2010 10:58:24 AM)

If Obama shut down the internet for just 72 hours...The time before his administration was forced out of office would be less than three weeks.

A Democratic President shutting down the internet for anything that even vaguely resembled political reasons, would lead directly to "Regime Change".

I think even the most brain washed Saul Alinsky, American Liberal/Communist knows deep down that shutting down the internet would lead to the end of Democratic Liberal/Communist politics as they know it. forever. Thats a third rail they do not want to touch.

pahunkboy -> RE: Lieberman proposes Internet control bill (6/19/2010 11:25:44 AM)

Oh come on.  The people will do WHAT if the net shuts down?  What exactly would people DO?

Slavehandsome -> RE: Lieberman proposes Internet control bill (6/19/2010 11:29:39 AM)

Its 'for the children'.

LOL

Economically...This country would lose the same amount of money that we lost on 9-11....For Every 30 minutes that the internet was shut down.

Sounds like it is time to stuff the mattresses.

I dont want it shut down- I use it alot.

I tend to think people would get around it somehow.

Like how? Smoke Signals?

Your aware that shutting down the internet means shutting down the banks, cell phones, 90% of the land line phones and all the newspapers and all the television other than your local assess junk auction channel...Right?...You do know that?

I know that the Obama core constituency of poorly educated, welfare skanks, with four children born on the government dime, by three different men and who receive food stamps while playing Tetris all day on a very expensive cell phone would be alright for a few days...Provided it wasn't the first of the month when the Daddy Obama check arrives, But the rest of the country would look like the L.A. riots and martial law inside of 48 hours.

-- well we could factor in just how often govt sites have been hacked.    Not by me- but some of these geeks are good at their craft.

I never said nor implied anything of the sort. I was just trying to make sure people are informed of such a frightening bill that's being discussed at this very moment.

There may be, but this is certainly the most idiotic way to try to prevent any sort of cyber "terrorism". I know at least a little bit about computers and networking, and there's maybe twenty different ways that any web attacks can be prevented, particularly for anything as risky as a power station or a bank, and many of these are already securely in place.

Whether the idea for this bill is born out of ignorance or a desire for power, it's bad and unnecessary. Additionally, if you'll check the article I linked (yes, CNET is a reliable news source), then you'll also see that the bill isn't just proposing a broad-scale on/off switch, but also the power to turn off "portions of the internet", including ISP's, ISP regions, and maybe something as specific as webhosts and webservers for websites.

" think even the most brain washed Saul Alinsky, American Liberal/Communist knows deep down that shutting down the internet would lead to the end of Democratic Liberal/Communist politics as they know it. forever. Thats a third rail they do not want to touch. "

Quite astute. In the near future I might start a chatroon or blog - for higher thinking people. People who know that intent can be determined by actions, or in this world, who actually benefitted in the end. All of this not expressed by the controllled media.

But those who can see have a tendency to see more. Some hallucinate, but not me.
