MissAsylum -> Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/19/2010 4:59:47 AM)

long story short, i had missed 1 of my birth control pills last week(couldn't find the pack) so on the last saturday, to be safe, my boyfriend and i used a condom as backup(trojan). We typically have very rough sex so we used lube(a brand we always use) to avoid any friction from the condom. well i was fine afterwards aside from the typical rough sex soreness. then on sunday, there was still quite a bit of pain, but the pain was rather itchy on top of it. i've been trying to see my gynocologist but she is away in India for a wedding and my normal doctor just told me to see her. now, what used to be pain, now resembles a yeast infection with a rubbed raw type of feeling. I'm pretty sure i'm not allergic to latex since i use latex gloves for my artwork and when i dye my hair. Would anybody have a clue as to whats going on with me?

My guess is that the lube you used likely was gycerin based which can cause yeast infections.

A second guess is it may be one of the other lube ingredients but yeast from glycerin is very common.

Edit to add: did the condoms contain a spermicide  (it would say contains nonoxonyl-9)? (As I read this is a lube you use all the time.)

You could have bacterial vaginosis, it is like a yeast infection but without the discharge, usually. Antibiotics can clear it up and Monistat helps with the itching.

That sounds like what I experienced...I'm allergic to spermicide. Perhaps that is it? But, there's no substitute for checking with your doctor.

AJ:the condoms do contain spermicide from what i'm reading. but since i've had the same partner for 4 years ,we don't regularly use condoms so i'm not sure if thats the problem. the last time i had consistantly used condoms was a loooooong time ago so i don't remember any discomfort i may have had. what may have cause it might be the lube we had used. we always use ky, however, this time it was the silk type, which was quite warm once it came in contact with me. i cant find the bottle, but somehow i doubt that ky silk is a heating lubricant, but i'm not 100% sure. RS: i wanted to use monistant, but since i'm not completely sure what i have, i didnt want to use it and potentially create a larger problem. do they have any problems that would subside the itching without having to use the whole treatment set?

It's possible that you had a low-grade or early yeast infection that had just started, but you hadn't noticed it yet, and the rough sex and lube boosted it into full-blown.  My philosophy has always been that, if you've had a yeast infection before, you never forget what it feels like, lol.  If you have a Monistat kit, try applying some of the ointment on the outside where it itches.  If you get that instant, cooling "ahhhhhhh" feeling of relief, it's probably yeast.  Also, use your nose.....yeast usually has that characteristic yeasty "bread" smell, though it might be faint.

I think there is a product sold over the counter that tells you whether it's a yeast or bacterial infection, kind of like a home pregnancy test type thing......dip the stick, read the color change???

Then go to an urgent care facility if your doctor is not available. Some Planned Parenthoods take walk ins but call first. Acacia extract creates the warm feeling and since it comes from a tree it could be and allergy. Alot of woman are allergic to spermicides. I really think you should see a doctor if you have a sensitivity to Monistat it could make things really unpleasant.

Mishna -> RE: Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/19/2010 7:27:58 AM)

With my reaction to spermicide, I was in a foreign country where health care was sketchy to say the least. I just waited a couple of days, and it went away on its own.

angelikaJ -> RE: Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/19/2010 8:17:15 AM)

1) Many women are sensitive to spermicide. Not all condoms contain it.
2) If it was a variant of the lube you usually use that might be suspect. Your body might not like that kind.
3) If you were coming down with a yeast infection, yes rough sex could aggravate it. Also if the lube contains glycerin it would act as food (sugar) for the yeast even if glycerin in lubes never bother you before.

*TMI ALERT*

In my case, yeast infections never look or smell like yeast infections. It almost looks like dental plaque. (And I never get the instant cooling feeling of relief from the Monistat creme either)

MissAsylum -> RE: Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/19/2010 8:18:32 AM)

i suppose i will be getting that dip test thingy, so that way i'll know if its just a yeast infection or something more serious.

The most common symptom is a smelly vaginal discharge. It may look grayish white or yellow. A sure sign of bacterial vaginosis is a "fishy" smell, which may be worse after sex. (WebMD)

so per suggestion, i went to the pharmacy to get the yeast infection test kit, but it would be my luck that they hadnt gotten a shipment of them. so i got the cream that comes with the kit. no "ahhhh" cooling feeling...more of a "ow! that is freaking hot!" feeling. i plan on going to a clinic first thing in the morning tomorrow, but i believe it make be an allergic reaction, rather than a yeast infection.

angelikaJ -> RE: Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/19/2010 11:53:21 AM)

I get the Ow! every time I use yeastie cream.
(make sure you got the anti fungal stuff and not just anti-itch stuff.)

You can have a minor latex allergy and not have it manifest itself in other areas. I have one. It never effected me from exams, medical procedures etcetera. However, condoms can cause minor irritation. I got tested. My doctor explained that they tend to be two different grades of latex and the gloves are more protected. It does sound like you have some type of allergy. I would try nonspermacide or a different type of spermicide type condoms first, the nonlatex condoms are pretty disgusting.

~FR~
Sometimes latex allergies can manifest in more delicate areas with mucous membranes where they don't on other areas like hands for instance. You could try those latex-free condoms they have (forget the name) and see what happens..... i tried the non-latex ones that Trojan puts out and they felt no different to me than their regular ones.

edited to add the last sentence.

makemewrite -> RE: Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/20/2010 8:59:31 AM)

I'm allergic to nonoxynol-9 and it always gives me a yeast infection. I was able to use Trojan ribbed (gold box). And monistat doesn't work for me, I need something with lotrimin.

SirsJewel -> RE: Am I allergic to something in condoms? (6/20/2010 3:00:04 PM)

I"ve had that happen i keep the monistat hand dab it and get it gone before it has time to flower and really become a problem~ jewels
