"Fresh installs over a non-formatted drive don't do much of anything to get rid of a virus"

I beg to differ. First of all I do a sidestep. That means I choose the directory in which to install Windows, I usually just lop the S off the end, making it C:\WINDOW instead. If not for the registry, virii don't work. This is a new registry. How can this not work, especially when it has worked for me so many times ?

T

Because in the "slightly smarter" version there's a core file that replicates..as in a loader.

I promise you..if you research the variations on a virus you'll find there are as many types and styles of delivery than you can count on your little piggy's.

I've had some that would screw up the deep level drive directories and would not let me format because the bios wouldn't recognize it as a drive to start with.

Some save themselves in system restore..some mask themselves as part of other programs by latching onto system or program .dll's and so on and so on.

Now for pretty much all of these there are work around..even the disk error I mentioned before...but they all aren't defeated by a simple re-install.

You can believe what you want but I know better.

Hopefully this is a simple problem and malwarebites will take care of it. A friend told me about the software recently but I usually go for the paid programs that seem to be more reliable at getting out nastiness.

As of date it has never found anything..

I would hope most people are aware as well that each program has it's weakness. What I used to do to save myself a full low level format and re-installing every single program I had...again...was to load and unload various virus programs, sweep and then un-install for the next install...That would get a majority of issues.(Every program would catch a few or more problems that the prior one didn't) but that was a lot of trouble..

So now I just save everything important to redundant drives, low level format and fresh install my main drive..works most times(No guarantee that the virus in question hasn't replicated itself to all of your drives though..but like I said it fixes most problems)

I'm a tenacious little bastard with computers as I am with life in general

Edited to add: I was typing this I guess as you were typing yours :>

I use Spybot search and destroy, A squared, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware, all run in succession on clean up day, they all tend to find something but never the same thing. I also run AVG free on a slow scan and if I am particularly suspicious, I also run Trend Housecall. After that I just think bloody Vista.

Didn't NYB do something like that ? You gotta remember, it was only 20 years ago or so. Simply redirected track 0 on the disk and thus took control.

This is old shit, you want new shyit I am telling you not to get too attached to anything.

I use Kaspersky and Spybot more than anything else.  Nothing's done my computer any damage since I installed Kaspersky years ago.  Spybot will occasionally pick up something - but I figure that this 'something' is just a harmless file that came with whatever bit of scumware Kaspersky has already wiped out.

I've got a soft spot for Spybot Search and Destroy.  The bloke who wrote it did it as a present for his girlfriend.  Aww - so romantic!

Raven, with respect to the advice regarding a registry tool, if that's a registry cleaner, you might want to go to Spybot Search & Destroy's forum for malware removal, http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?s=27df69c712210b020c1f6e480e3b60a8&f=22, and read the topic, "Registry Cleaners, not recommended."

If you have a PC guru, can we assume they've made sure you have a firewall, latest version, an antivirus updated at least once a day, a frequently updated anti-malware program (you're getting Malwarebytes), and operating system updates (security patches)? You can't run more than one antivirus at the same time, but programs that are strictly anti-malware are usually compatible with each other, if you decide to run more than one.

Be careful which programs you choose and from where you download them. Some programs and websites are purposely made to look like those from a trusted source, some "security" programs are spyware, themselves, and some downloads, even from recognized programs, are stuffed (bundled) with toolbars and search functions that amount to spyware, which you have to opt out of carefully - if you can at all.

[Edit to add:] I should say more simply - make sure to get tech-recommended programs from a trusted site. And once you have an antivirus and anti-malware, you can scan each new download with those, before opening or running it.

Good luck!

Wow, maybe i'll just go back to pen and paper. Who knew there was so much complexity in just keeping junk off your PC!

Still running fine today - thanks again everyone!
