One of the finest human beings ever to play professional sports - not to mention the only man in the history of the NBA to have killed a lion with a spear - is dead.

quote:

(CNN) -- Manute Bol, one of the tallest players in NBA history, died Saturday at the age of 47, a spokeswoman with the University of Virginia Medical Center confirmed to CNN. The hospital did not disclose the cause of death.

RIP, Manute

Damn. This was a truly heroic human being. He donated almost all of the money he made in the NBA to charity, and was so broke when he retired, he had to resort to publicity stunts to keep raising money for childrens' charities. Boxed a former NFL player, laced up a pair of skates and played hockey to raise money for children in Sudan, and I think even suited up as a jockey to raise a few more bucks. He never cared that he was making himself look silly; he said that it was his duty to humankind to do whatever he needed to do to help. If there were even a half dozen more people like him in professional sports, I might actually start to give a rat's ass about sports again.

They said it was kidney failure. Damn shame, he was an interesting human being.

Wow. Shocking and sad. I thought I had heard that he had become sick after one of his African trips, but that was awhile ago.
