I adopted this custom, but is it justified?

I think that if you are comfortable with it or it is meaningful to you then that would be justification enough. I don't really follow any protocol regarding D/s versus d/s. I use them both pretty interchangeably. To sum it up in one sentence I don't generally do anything in my written communication that cannot be adequately replicated in spoken communication. Self capitalization has always struck me as slightly pompous but to each his own. If I quote a self capper I retain their capitalization in the quote but do not carry forward with the practice in my reply (i.e. when typing you, your or yours.)

Slash speak is a distraction. I'll often bypass a post written with slash speak because I find it a nuisance. Same with the third partiers to a lesser degree. For a long time I equated third party speech with a lack of self respect or self esteem but I have come to realize that it is merely their way of expressing themselves. I can rarely read third party speech these days without laughing out loud as it reminds me of the episode "The Jimmy" from Seinfeld.

If you want to have some fun sometime get on IRC and hang out in a fetish based channel. The whole online collaring protocol (the correct use of brackets in and around one's nickname) is a science all unto itself.

I don't like the practice, and I do make fun of it, at times. However, there are a very, very few folks that use some form of "kink speak", that I DO like, and respect, like LadyPact, or beth. My ridicule does not go out to them.

No double standard there.

FR-

The capitalization based on D/s, M/s and the like is no big deal. I don't do, and won't do it because I write using proper grammar whenever possible. If someone's screen name is capitalized or not, I follow how they do it, viewing it as how they wish to be addressed. Of course that is only with their screen name, I do not address with honorifics to people I'm not involved with.

It is the slashy speak that I wish would just stop being used. It is way to over the top, especially when people don't use it simply on the pronouns, but on the adjectectives and adverbs as well, as in W/we were L/laughing O/ourselves silly over something. It isn't necessarily difficult to read, but it really does break the flow and cause eye strain and in my opinon looks absolutely ridiculous.

As long as people stick to the upper/lower case of the I, me, Him, etc., I have the "to each his own" type of attitude.

*chuckles* THis is me poking a bit of fun at you. YOu don't do the capitalization thing based on

D/s or M/s??

*laughs* One of the things I hate is that it creeps in in the damndest places.... like going to the MAsT meeting. That's actually why I'm happy that I'm all over the map with it... you'll see me write things like d/s, D/S, or D/s. At least I'm confusing if nothing else.

LadyPact -> RE: Capitalization and other grammar quirks (6/21/2010 8:38:27 AM)

Somewhere in the Mistress section, in the middle of a very long thread, a bit of a side discussion ensued about a particular phrase that had been used in the original.  "Not a ms day."  The author hadn't been very clear at all.  It was pointed out that we weren't entirely sure what that person meant.  Did it mean there would be no power exchange between the parties that day, such as no M/s interaction and they were just meeting as friends?  Did it mean masochism and sadism wouldn't be engaged in that day?

It isn't very often that something like that happens, but it's ironic when it does.

I'm one of the 'offender'... but I take that in stride since, even when I'm being perfectly decorous, I've been called "offensive". *chuckles* That being said, my offense revolves around the use of third-person speech (though I will also capitalized House Bladewing terms like Keeper -- which also, technically, breaks some grammar rules... but it does make things a little easier to explain, and clarifies that my use of the term is outside of the 'norm'). I like having our servants use third-person speech during certain phases of their training, or at other times when it makes sense to me as a reinforcement or disciplinary tool. For us, the third-person speech requirement, when in effect, covers -all- communication... spoken, mumbled, written, signed... whatever. At the same time, we also try to teach our servants (if they don't know already) how to use third-person speech effectively. Fortunately, this skill was drilled into my brain as an author by any number of editors, until I became quite facile at both -doing- it and -teaching- it.

I accept that some folks may choose not to read what I have to say because of the way that I say it. That's their choice -- just like how I present what I have to say (and how I direct my servants to speak) is mine.
