Interesting. A man violent enough to rape a woman could potentially kill her if he got trapped in a device like this. Brilliant device but I really don't know if it will help or harm.

The pain would be a distraction tho.  Enough that the woman could run.

Actually, it won't break the skin but it will disable the attacker.  If he tries to take the device off, it will grip him harder, it can't be removed without a doctor.

That's the line anyways. I see nothing so magical about the device that a person cannot remove it with a somewhat steady hand and scissors.

It might be hard to have a steady hand when you feel as though your dick is being bitten off when you expected an entirely different situation

I imagine rage and anger would indeed be of the first responses. However, I know even the most pain adverse are able to school themselves to get a task done that is necessary.

Hmmmm..... I would think the element of surprise would indeed help someone get away...

My last dominant paid for me to have self defense class, that is possibly a more productive way to deal with the rape epidemic in some portions of Africa (there is a myth that having sex with a virgin will cure aids, causing an epidemic of rape)

My first thought on seeing this was wondering where beargonewild has been.  I'm sure it would crack him up to find that it really was possible for a vagina to potentially have 'teeth'.

OK, I admit to having the same thought.  Wouldn't this thing be kind of fun to play with if it didn't need to be removed by a medical professional?  I wonder if there's a way to work around that.

For the record, I think that it's a terrible shame that rape is so under prosecuted that this is the best alternative.  It only might deter the rape.  At the same time, it might enrage the assailant.  Basically, you now have a device that automatically makes the fight/don't struggle decision for you.  At least if the assailant kills the woman, having to get the device removed will aide in leading to him being a suspect.

True, but it would have to be capitalized on. If not.. well..

While a good idea it is also a rather impractical for a general population for a myriad of reasons although if one has the means and will to use it in current times it would help them individually. But, as you mention, the sources of the problem would need to be addressed.

LadyPact, This device has been around for a few years now and iirc previous designs actually had small metal barbs. Looking at it I would think the lip at the back would allow scissors to slip under and slowly cut it away and is one of the few ways I can imagine a doctor would be able to get it off. If you can find one I'm sure you could attempt the process with certain vegetables.

This thing, as the article said, will cause a number of women who use to to be injured or killed well beyond what could have happened without it. One of the best books I have ever read about dealing with a rape in progress (some prevention and what to do afterwards, but mostly during) called "How To Say No To A Rapist And Survive" by Frederic Storaska used a term called the Alarm Clock effect. It pointed out that to a rapist that a woman screaming for help was like an alarm clock going off. One that when you hit the button did not turn off. So you hit it again and again and again until it stops. I think this will cause a similar reaction except that it will be because it hurts and he wants it off and possibly for her to take it off of him. If she can't, he will hit her until she does. Or she can't move. Or just as punishment for having done that to him. If it hurts enough, a sharp knife will cut it off. It may cut him but that will probably hurt less or for less time. Then he cuts the woman.

Yes, she might get away while he is distracted and possibly incapacitated, but would you bet your life on that?

In many cases, the assailant is HIV positive if not approaching full blown AIDS. Check that stats for South Africa, and you will see that the disease is epidemic there, with 1/4 to 1/3 of adults in their 20s to 30s infected. Julia was bang on when she said that the myth that having sex with a virgin is a cure for AIDS is widespread that that area of the world (I have friends from South Africa, and we have discussed this). This likely ups the stats for the number of infected men committing rape to try and cure the disease. With 28% of men in the region admitting to have committed rape... do the math.

Per the article, a man with this device attached will not even be able to walk, which leads me to believe that it is fairly debilitating. A woman using this device will have a good idea of what will happen, giving her an advantage because she expects it while he probably doesn't (and if he did, it might make him think twice in the first place). Given the facts in the previous paragraph, combined with the fact that many of these men will beat or kill the woman with or without the device, I have to support it's distribution and use. This is an area of the world where a woman's life means relatively little, and rape is so underprosecuted that it is nearly accepted behaviour.

--  I disagree in the premise that if one is allowed to be raped she then might live.  Maybe for a date rape.  but not rape-rape.

I read that it is best to fight off the attack.

Date rape IS rape-rape. They are both violent assaults.  There is no such thing as BEST for attacks. It depends on the victim, the assailant and the circumstance. Each woman has to determine for herself the best thing she needs to do to survive. For some situations fighting may be the best option. For other situations, surrendering may be the best way she can come out of it alive.
