They'll probably cost your first born grandchild, though.

WOW, this would've been great news to me back when I could see.

But this is still one hell of a development, a lens that can change it's dioptric properties without changing shape ? That means it must change it's refractive index.

Nice to say the least. I wonder what they cost. Instead of a switch, they could have a knob on the side, and be like "dial-vision". All the while the "hard" part of the lens is cut to correct the wearer's astigmatism, if necessary. I some cases astigmatism varies with range, but the optometrists tend to deal with it at closer ranges first, for some reasons that are pretty logical. Every once in a while though you will see a scrip for glasses that has a different correction for astigmatism betweeen distance and close range. That is the result of a very thorough eye exam and you should probably stick with that optometrist if possible.

But being a full blooded Terminator, I am now thinking of the possible commercial applications of this technology. Not that I don't want to help people, but, let them do that. LOL

yeah, like the others said....cool idea.....but what will they cost? Also, what happens if the battery dies? and how long will the battery last, not to mention where will it be concealed. It probably means big ugly frames, where most people prefer petite, lightweight frames.

Using some sort of LCD technology battery life should not be a big issue. But the cost still is, imagine carrying a bunch of stuff and having them fall off, who knows where. One real bitch people who wear glasses have is that sometimes you need to wear your glasses to see to find your glasses. That can be as frustrating as................ well see the BDSM handbook for similar situations.

Having them self adjust might not be the best idea. It could be done via a proximity sensor of some type, but then say driving, what if the thing decides to focus on the dashboard instead of staying in distance mode ? In other words it could tell how far something is without great difficulty, but how does it know what YOU are looking at ?

Who knows where else this technology will be applied. Not long after calculators grew out of nixie tubes, then VFDs, and into LCDs, now that technology makes your TVs. I guess we'll have to wait for some really smart kid to drop out of MIT to see what happens next.
