My birman cat is expecting litter and it seems now that her behaviour gets even more weird...or at least I link it with her pregnancy...which of course theoretically might not be the case...

this evening she catched twice snails/slugs (which none of my cats ever did) to carry them inside to try to eat them straight away (so not to bring them me as a gift), leading me to take them away from her (due to the stuff those critters seem to carry with themselves I don't fancy her to eat it, even less when she has litter)...to take them back outside out of her reach...

however, now whilst I nicked that second snail/slug away from her to bin it (as that one was - i think - not saveable anymore, and if so then it will get out of the bin again one day) she jumped onto my sofa to piss on it....something she never ever did

Anyone else experience in such behaviour particular during pregnancy times from your cat or dog or anteater or whatever....or if not outside of those times

I am just gobsmacked right now that she dared to do that to my sofa

Doesn't really sound all that odd to me. The snails are probably a craving, perhaps they have something her diet is lacking, or it could be kitty 'pickles and ice cream'. As for peeing on the sofa, it might be that she didn't intend to pee on it. I'd imagine a litter of kits pressing on one's bladder could make for an unfortunate accident or two.
Either that or she really didn't like you taking away her snack and was feeling a bit bitchy....

Seriously...I am sure she was bitchy in that respect...she is a lil lady with an attitude at times and that soooooooooo never happened before....what a luck that this sofa will end up in the bin anyway once I move away from here, so her remains from her mark won't stay forever with me

Start to feel lucky now that my other girl never did this when I regular killed the spiders that one tended to bring it to...play with

Maybe its time to re-consider my likes of cats by now *shudder*

If she starts urinating outside of her box (once is an accident *maybe* but more than once is a pattern) you need to take her to the vet as she probably has an infection.

Escargot? Your cat is a culinary snob.

My guess is she is eating the bleeech's because she knows she is vitamin/mineral deficient in whatever the bleeeech's can provide. They have an amazing ability of doing that, as do we humans, but we are too dumb to recognize it.

Peeing. My guess is she is marking her territory for the birth of her babies.

To clean it...i swear this works but be careful that it does not discolor your sofa.http://www.catsofaustralia.com/urinestainremoval.htm#Recipe0

If anything is machine washable, add a half cup of Apple-Cider Vinegar to the initial wash cycle.

thanks blushes and holly

if she isn't increasing much with her tummy then I will go with her to the vet next week anyway (currently have to wait for the next salary) because whilst her nipples keep growing her tummy doesnt...and there should be more improvement by now IMO...but yes Holly...she is a snob...she had a period where she didnt eat much since she came home from the stud boy following which I bought damn small tins for damn much money for her...just to encourage her more to eat...and now I know I should have just gone to the garden and get slugs instead

It's just that her facial expression last night convinced me that she did that on purpose...and she does have attitude at times...maybe I should reconsider if I really wanna keep one of her youngsters when she has litter

believe me...if I would have the space....yep...but a 1 bedroom flat with already 4 furrys...there isn't much space anymore...its only not overcrowded as my 2 boys are outside to 85% of the year and my girls are outside when I am at home as well...so even if I would want to...its not an option...and in the next while is no move coming up to change that.

have 2 unimates in my neck who want one and one how might want one and a colleague and a friend of my parents too...so there is a huuuuuuuuuuge likelyhood that not everybody can have one as I doubt that she will have 6....even when she spent 4 weeks with him...

so in theory I agree Holly...in practice its not possible at present...

You dont want her to have 6 kittens; there is nothing worse than having to bury the runt if it dies. 4 is a good number to aim for, leaving some nipples left over for stragglers who cant find their way.

Have you prepared her a den or two to have the babies in? Put old (clean) towels in there on top of some bedding - then you can change the topsheet towel as and when. It needs to be somewhere quiet and out of the way but where, when she retreats there, howling to give birth, you can get to her just in case. Dont let her pick her own place - you will live to regret it!

A drink of goat's milk keeps mom's strength up during labour. Make a note of when she gives birth - anything up to 45 minutes apart is OK, longer may indicate problems. The other cats, if any, will want to come see what all the fuss is about but generally they will just sit and watch from a distance. Mom will stay with the kittens for days after birth so feed her in her den. The other cats will likely put their nose in to see the newborns but IME at least, wont touch them.

In the meantime feed her with some IAMs (there is a pregnancy version I believe) as well as lots of clean, fresh water and meat and fish - she needs to eat a lot whilst she's pregnant and to continue to do so whilst feeding the babies when theyre born.

And dont worry too much outside of all this as mom cats miraculously seem to know exactly what to do and when and how.

Dont expect the kittens to have the same relationship with you as their mom if you keep one or more either - they dont attach to people so readily if they grow up and live with their mom.

HOLLY!!!! you are wicked today...

either way, I will be ok...I do know that I can't keep them and as I am about to be a registered breeder I have to get used to that. At least in that instance I know they would have a marvellous home...

And nope LadyEllen, I don't want her to have 6 kitten. I only said that she would need to have 6 if all the people would be satisified to get one whom I promised one...so any number is fine but I am hoping for a red girl.

and thanks for all your tips LadyEllen...cmail will be on your way

If she is pregnant as it seems to be then they should be due approx between 5th and 11th of July....though its not entirely sure as the breeder didn't see her mating with her boy and she was there for 4 weeks...however that the assumption as she started to pink up before I picked her up and that starts usually in the 3rd week, therefore we assume she mated successfully during her first week of stay with that boy at the other end of the UK
