LafayetteLady -> Posting just to post (6/21/2010 5:11:20 AM)

Most of us all have an issue with people who resurrect ancient threads. Sometimes the person resurrecting may have something of value to add, but normally they didn't look at the date of the post and don't realize that the situation being discussed is ancient and their "advice" becomes pretty irrelevent.

Today, as I was skimming through, catching up on new threads, I came across a bunch of new posts in the Health section. There usually isn't that much new there, so of course I'm immediately wondering whether there is some epidemic we should all be aware of, lol.

Instead, what I find is that someone has resurrected them to post for the sake of posting. I get to the end to see "Good info, thanks," at the end of about 20 posts. Obviously, someone is attempting to just increase the post count quickly or some other such nonsense.

I know I wasn't the only one annoyed, because on several of them, someone mentioned it. Of course we have no way of stopping it, other than to suggest to the "offenders" that they don't do it anymore (kind of like pissing in the wind).

The only time I post to something without saying anything is when someone posts some kind of "good news" and to say congrations, best of luck, whatever. You know, the "my SO is coming home on leave from the military," "My kid is finally graduating college (or the poster is)," "I just had my first experience and it was great." Those kinds of things.

So now I am wondering what everyone's opinons are of people who do that, and have y'all been guilty of doing it yourself?

xxblushesxx -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 5:17:40 AM)

As you know, you're preaching to the choir! *lol*
The same person did it in the "introductions" area yesterday.
It makes it very difficult to find new and relevent posts.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 5:19:45 AM)

I know I'm preaching to the choir. I saw your post to the person on the first thread. Then I opened another couple before looking over on the right and seeing that they were the new post on each and every one. I don't tend to go through the introduction section all that often.

I think it was more a matter of not having seen so many resurrected by one person in one day. Think they will read this one and say "Good Post?"

wandersalone -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 5:21:22 AM)

It tends to make me be less inclined to read the particular person's posts in the future ..... I don't actually see the point of posting comments that don't actually further a discussion unless I am in P&ORS where it is a free for all and I sure as hell don't understand the whole fear that some people have about the vanilla cone (I wish I could have kept my vanilla cone forever in protest against all the vanilla hataz [:D]  )

DarlingSavage -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 5:55:25 AM)

I saw all those posts.  Granted, I was guilty when I was new of posting to a thread that I saw mentioned in another thread and I had no idea what I was doing by posting in it, but I got my head thoroughly bitten off for it.  And I wasn't even saying anything like, "Good post."  I was genuinely commenting.

However, I did see what you were talking about and it never occurred to me that they were just trying to get rid of their vanilla cone.  I thought, "Oh, that poor thing, she's lost and she doesn't have anything else to do besides sit on the computer and look at old threads.  How sad!"  I even thought about saying something to her.  Something like, "Oh, you must be lost.  Look, the conversations are over here, this is what you do..."

But, I didn't.

windchymes -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 6:36:54 AM)

I saw all of those last night, too, and pretty much agree with the comments here, lol.

Some people talk incessantly just to hear themselves talk.  And some people type :)

pahunkboy -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 6:41:45 AM)

The person could tho use the "test" section.

sirsholly -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 7:14:35 AM)

<<<types while talking incessantly

mistoferin -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 7:15:44 AM)

Now you KNOW that you just posted just to post!

juliaoceania -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 7:55:48 AM)

fast reply

I think I musta been sucked into posting on those threads...lol....I wasn't paying attention to the dates yesterday

CM used to attach a paperclip to old threads, so when they were resurrected we could easily see that. Since that icon is now used to show threads with attachments there is no way of knowing a thread is old. I wish there was some way they could mark old threads for us again

LadyPact -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 9:04:09 AM)

There for a while, there was a great policy going on about resurrecting old threads.  A Mod would simply come on the thread, post that it was asked not to resurrect old threads, preferring that folks would start a new one, and they would lock the thread.  Not the case for updates, of course, but it's great for drive by comments.

In what's being referred to in the OP, I think it would be a pain in the ass (and not the good kind) to go chasing after one poster who felt the need to wish folks well on twenty different threads, dug up from months ago.  If a Mod saw the pattern, hopefully, it was fixed on the other side and it won't be a new habit.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 9:47:29 AM)

Wouldn't it be nice if it was "fixed" and didn't become a new "thing?"

Sometimes it is really a damned if you do, damned if you don't for new posters and old threads. They comment on an old thread and get reamed, they start a new one and get reamed for not searching.

Of couse, silly me, I wish for common sense with people. If it is a general discussion type of thing, posting thoughts on an old thread, potentially resurrecting it can be an ok thing. New people post with their ideas or thoughts. When it is a situational thing with someone asking for advice on what to do and it is many months (or years old), it just has zero relevance.

In this case however, it is nothing more than saying "good post," as though the OP was looking for someone to approve their thread or something. At least osf, when he wanted to up his post count came up with questions and comments. Sure a lot of them might have been silly or stupid, but lots of people posted to his threads.

LadyPact -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 9:56:35 AM)

I don't know if it really is damned if you do and damned if you don't.  I can't recall that anybody has ever gotten blasted for starting a new thread and referencing the old one.  That way, you've got the good quality of the last thread available, along with new perspective.

If it really is just about upping the post count, they can always try polls and random stupidity.  [;)]

Arpig -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 11:10:31 AM)

What does it matter if an old thread is bumped...you people take this place far too seriously. I would rather have a few odd old threads resurrected than have to deal with a forum-nazi mentality like yours.

I understand what you're saying Arpig, and appreciate it. The reason it bothers me is because I can't find the new, relevant threads. I have to search through several pages, opening a page or two of old threads (which I have to open to find that they're old) until I finally get to the new ones, which, since they are new should be on top.

I don't want to bash the person who did it or hurt her feelings, but I just wanted her to be aware of how difficult that stuff makes it for everyone else.

Arpig -> RE: Posting just to post (6/21/2010 12:23:57 PM)

Funny, I am on here every day and I don't ever see a "page or two" of old threads, in fact I rarely see any such old threads. It is NOT a problem, so quit making shit up and whining about nothing

My opinion is people who care about shit like this have way too much time on their hands. I think its time to sign off if this irks you. (imo)

She's not making it up.  I would direct you to the Health and Safety section so you can verify.
