ORIGINAL: Arpig Most Gvt jobs (including the post office in major centres) require French. Private employers may or may not require it, depending on where you are...in Quebec its required period, in and around Ottawa or northern New Brunswick its pretty much mandatory. The rest of the country varies...Manitoba has a strong French presence so its required for a lot of positions. To a very large degree speaking French is considered a sensible thing to do, and it looks good on the resume...remember roughly 1/4 of the population up here speaks French as their 1st language so it makes sense to have at least one person on staff able to speak with them if you want them to spend their money at your establishment. Thankfully in NS, where I'm going to be, they only require you to know how to pour a large number of drinks throughout the night. Seriously though, that was my only small glitch in the whole process, having to learn French. I hate the language with a passion. No, not the people, not the culture, not the food, not even the politics, but the language! It seriously sounds like they're talking with their tongues stuck up a frogs ass.
