Status: offline 		I agree LaT, unfortunately it's difficult to tell in this medium if someone really is being overly passionate. I've come to realize that we have quite a few people that think many things are heated or passionate when I don't see it that way at all. Shrugs.

Status: offline 		For me, the warning signs are things like.......personal attacks, a dramatic change in posting style, usually with a lot of abnormal (for that person) typos, repeatedly saying the same things without acknowledging the other person/s contributions or continually belittling other's opposing contributions. Things like that are clues that it's just not worth continuing because the person is too emotionally invested in being 'right', not in discussing.

I love to watch a debate.  I love to watch someone who feels passionately about something talk about it, even if I disagree with them.  Maybe I am mistaken in thinking they are trying to change anothers mind......this medium is hard to judge intent on sometimes.

Thanks for the inputs.  I will definately give it all some thought.

No, no I wasn't referring to your thread, but I'm pointing out that I'm a bit dismayed at the number of people that do start whining threads and see so much of what is typed here as personal, it's become rather common unfortunately. It just makes me think that what we think we are conveying isn't necessarily what is being received. I agree sometimes it is just a contest, sometimes though you learn something. Then again, I'm not sure everyone is here for the same reasons.

By the way, that whole self beating thing is kinda hard and not so hot, I don't recommend it.

Pretty much how I see it. Its amazing the number of plonkers who think that somehow they have won the argument because it is they, and not you who had the last word. They usually have some bright thing to say too, when you inform them its over, and you wont indulge them anymore.

I especially find the keypad warrior types risible. Snarling and threatening like toy poodles in a locked car, but shut the fuck right up if the door were ever to be opened.

You know them straight away. Just sign off and let them have their precious last word.

I never ever go on those multi page tit-for-tat crusades that some folks here are renown for. Never. I usually just offer my thoughts and move on. On occasion I will revisit a thread to add another point or respond to a response to my earlier comment. If I am right on page 2 there really is no argument and no point in pursuing it until page 42 and really I haven't the patience. Often the page 42 folks are just reiterating the same line they offered on page 2 - like a jukebox that only plays one song.

Sorry I was not talking about this particular thread when it comes to whining... It is the person who thinks their opinion on the validity of a particular thread gives them the right to make light of it...or to call someone stupid, idiotic, or hijack the thread to show their distain.

If I feel that way about a subject and don't want to address an issue directly... I just don't post and move to another thread that interests me.

I don't mind going a few rounds with someone in an honest discussion of some topics. However, there are some forums in which I rarely respond to anything, though I do read through them a lot, simply because a large percentage of the "regulars" in those forums will change my wording or take what I say out of context in order to try to make their point. Other times they will nit-pick non-essential points to either try to discredit my opinion or try to make their position look better. When that happens I simply bow out and leave them to their nonsense.

Often I don't have the time to sit at the computer for hours bantering back and forth so I simply state my opinion and leave, at which point they can take it or leave it. If I see the same topic scroll by the next time I am on the site I may or may not check to see where the discussion has gone.

This is my thought, as well.

I don't mind healthy give and take conversation, and will remain in one as long as it is constructive and interesting.  When it turns into endless argument, particularly to the point of personal attacks, I'm out.  Sometimes I read people going on and on and I'm sitting here thinking Good grief, let it go already (yes I really do say "good grief"). 

I'm not out to change the world's mind.  I do like to share my perspective for what it's worth.  But I prefer my interactions to be positive and constructive.  When I feel they are veering from that, it just doesn't feel good to me, so I exit.
