Hum.... I see that they were bought out in 99. I saw something about this on PBS a while ago.

I will have to admit I am wrong at this time.

I'll look into it and get back to you.

Are you then prepared to render a notarized statement for the group?

Ok, it would appear the the Newel Corp bought them in 1999.

Here is the link to the PBS frontline I saw. It's the transcription.

I am aware of all of that.  Rubbermaid wasn't complaining when they were making money hand over fist from WalMart.  That's the lesson you can never let one customer take over.

We had the same thing happen.  One of the companies we contracted for let one of their customers become to large a portion of their business.  Then the customer started dictating the terms.  Suddenly prices started getting slashed production schedules became ridiculous.  The argument we were given was that if they didn't bend over backwards for that customer the doors would wind up shut.  That was happening anyway only slowly from being squeezed.

We walked and every time they called us  we declined to take the work.

It isn't just a business, it's a blight on humanity.

Do you shop there at all?

There is no denying, Jeff, that Wally World's business model has changed the landscape. Suppliers have had to adapt, and they have literally killed the competition in some places. (Hmmm... Competition. I wonder why they call it that, instead of, "cooperation?" It's a puzzler.)

Stocking shelves is not a good job, there. Flipping burgers isn't a good job either. Wal-Mart serves a valuable purpose in their employment practices, though. They hire the ugly.

and deny them benefits and don't pay for them when they are injured. Wal-Mart is the devil.

No, I refuse to support sweat shops.

Walmart is just a business.  You either patron it, or you don't.

Using Chinese slave labor, they beat out all local competitors. You see some good prices but more of your retail neighbors out of business and...out of work.

Walmarts are a net reduction in employment, revenue and taxes almost everywhere they go.

I do not support slave labor.
She discusses child labor around 3:30 minutes.

Do you have a problem with my decision to be a responsible consumer?

flcouple2009 -> RE: Walmart hits Chicago (6/27/2010 6:57:43 AM)

And?  What does that have to do with what I asked?

You neither shop at Home Depot or Lowes either, correct?

DomImus -> RE: Walmart hits Chicago (6/27/2010 9:47:10 AM)

If Wal-Mart is as bad as everyone says it should be a perfect fit with Chicago.

There we have it...Nor do we own any electronics and every single thing is made in the USA! Like walmart is the only corporation that benefits from sweat shops. Hell..Don't forget the cheap stuff on EBAY!

People have just enough "conviction" to make them feel better about themselves but let's not go crazy right?[;)]

DarlingSavage -> RE: Walmart hits Chicago (6/27/2010 10:25:54 AM)

I confess, I love tools and I have not heard anything bad about either of these stores, but you say that as though there is which puts me on the defensive.  However, at the moment, I shop at Ace because that one is on the bus line and next to my grocery store.  It's also much smaller than the other two.

Yeah, like the rabid vegans who wear leather[8|]. I appreciate and encourage people doing as best they can to avoid supporting poor labor practices, sweat shops, etc. But...as others have implied....unless you live in a bubble and make everything yourself from scratch, you're going to inadvertantly support things you probably wish you weren't. Getting on a pedastal about boycotting WalMart is fine but - let's face it - that's one tiny piece of a huge mess and doesn't make anyone a saint..........luci
