Louve00 -> History repeats itself.... (6/26/2010 1:13:00 PM)

I was on facebook of all places (I keep up with those "boo BP" pages.  And ran across this video (and event in history) that I didn't even know happened.  I found it very interesting.  Did anyone else know about this?

Those were my exact words to myself!!  To think we've already gone thru this problem once.  You'dve thought safety regulations and restrictions would be well in place and enforced.

But hey...Wall St took a dump in the 30's, and it happened again there, too.  (Better hush before we're accused of talking liberal talk!)

And yet, strangely I'm sure, both Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico were still there!

Did you?  I don't know whether I should boast that its before my time and I'm a spry, young, chik (coff, coff)...or cry because we're incapable of learning to save our own asses for our own good!!

Which didnt you know about?

Lack of regulation? You both must be joking.

Louve00 -> RE: History repeats itself.... (6/26/2010 1:53:23 PM)

I didn't know we were so foolish, period.  There's an old saying...fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.  We should be ashamed!!!

Ashamed of what? It cant be that youre ashamed of lack of regulation, theres plenty of it. Ashamed of ineffective government oversight? Then you should be ashamed of all major government undertakings, the incompetence is nothing new. Ashamed that drilling is allowed at all? There would be far more long term negative impact from that than there is from oil spills.

The Bay of Campeche/Ciudad del Carmen is a beautiful place, with little if any long term environmental impact.

pahunkboy -> RE: History repeats itself.... (6/26/2010 2:22:11 PM)

rules seldom apply to Rothschilds, the royal family the key owners of BP.

As I said, ashamed of the fact that we don't learn our own lessons.  The well that happened in the gulf of mexico then was the same ones renting the rig that blew this time (transocean).  I guess maybe if I personally can be ashamed of anything its keeping myself ignorant to the history we've repeated.  If I talk about the shame of the oil companies its that they haven't learned what cutting corners and taking short cuts, eliminating safety mechanisms and drilling in even deeper water, all for the sake of money, then I mean the shame they should have for the greed they put over safety.  If I turn to gov't, then I guess I could say yes, they were shamefull in not regulating the hell out of these oil companies, out of Wall St...out of everything....against the strong dismay of so many about regulations.

And as far as the Bay of Campeche/Ciudad del Carman being a beautiful place....(and for that matter, as a result of the spill 30 yrs ago, the gulf was thriving too, so I'll give you that....Alaska isn't,

That's why Mark King's boat is parked in a warehouse. The former herring fisherman used to pull in up to $150,000 per year. Now he makes about $50,000 fishing salmon. Herring basically disappeared within three years of the spill.

King's hope was to pass on his business to his kids.

"They're gone," King said. "They aren't involved in fishing. They didn't have the opportunities I had growing up here."

While herring populations are still devastated, other species such as salmon and bald eagles have recovered. But perhaps the most remarkable is what never went away - and you can find it just a short plane ride from Cordova. On the shoreline, all you have to do is move a couple of rocks and you strike oil - Exxon Valdez oil - 21 years later.

They are regulating the hell out of them! thats part of the problem. If it werent for moronic environmentalists we could be shallow water drilling and spills like this would be stopped in 2 days.

Louve00 -> RE: History repeats itself.... (6/26/2010 5:40:11 PM)

That makes alot of sense.  Regulating the hell out of them is the problem for them not wanting to find out how to respond to problems that they cause.  They had no clue how to respond to it in 200 ft of water...and are using the same tactics (because they didn't bother using any of the money they've made already to put the safety mechanisms in place for this well) which is a mile under water, where pressure is greater and results are further unknown.  I don't follow that logic.  Because they're regulated so heavily in less deep waters are you saying they were forced to drill deeper because they don't regulate drilling that deep?  So in other words, so they didn't have to spend the money to avoid this mess??  I'm not trying to be flip, I just don't follow your logic.
