You know what confuses me? He Backed Obama. Even said he would be a Fine Candidate. So, he's a Racist Hypocrit. Or maybe he just thougfht that nice white man had interesting hair. I just don't quite understand hate. QSM

fast reply.... I love the way the Right Wingnuts come on here to bash a man as a racist that did much in his life to overcome his wrongs... and yet these very same people are apologists for torture, genocide committed by Israel, etc etc etc.... Typical cretin mentality....same people can't grow up and take a long look in the mirror and see how riddled with contradictions they are and attacking a man that is 1000% better human being through introspection and dedication than they will probably ever be...

Byrd speaks about this transition much more effectively than I could ever do so... What I suggest is using the ole google machine and looking that answer up for yourself. It is something I found out years ago when he spoke so eloquently against invading Iraq. He spent the last few decades of his life atoning for mistakes in his youth. I tend to be the type of person that takes into account when another person has a heartfelt change and does better after learning better. Byrd was self educated. He did not even have a degree until he was a public servant. He took night classes in order to attain his education. He learned he was wrong and then he did something about that. Byrd grew up in the South of 80 years ago. The KKK was the same as joining the Lions Club is in the North. Byrd grew up in a South that was not that far from the aftermath of the Civil War..... Here is the thing.... Strom Thurmond was a life long racist. He quit the democrat party when they passed the Civil Rights act. He made racist comments clear up until he took the Great Dirt Nap, and Republicans embraced him and his legacy... and here Byrd disavowed this and he is demonized... yeah I see hypocrisy on this thread
