Where does the term "Domme" come from?  who started it?  why on earth was it started?
I was speaking with a Male friend of mine......we happened to be talking about FemDoms and who on earth decided that Domme was a better word.  If you are a female, are you called a femme? not that i ever heard of.
There are Dominant Women, there are Dominant Men.........you are what you are, but Domme?   I guess there are terms for everything, i prefer FemDom, i will continue using that.  I suppose my curiousity gets the better of me at times and i just have to go...........Huh?

Happy Friday y'all.........have a good weekend.

I always thought Domme was french. I know that in Spanish there is the masculine and feminine version of words.

Not sure where the term first began, but it is likely a slang term for the latin word Domina, which means lady or mistress. The male version being Dominus, or master. Why the extra m and the e at the end were added is beyond my feeble comprehension.

Thank you  MstrssPassion.  It never really thought that there may be another thread on this.

There's an even older, more interesting thread on the word from way back I think you'd enjoy...

Hey, you know "femme" has a nice ring to it....Henceforth I would like to be known as Femme Indigo.....Makes me think of Femme Fatale.

I came up with this at Dictionary.com: Femme: Slang. Exhibiting stereotypical or exaggerated feminine traits. Used especially of lesbians and gay men.

Here's what I get for Femme Fatale:
  1. A woman of great seductive charm who leads men into compromising or dangerous situations.
  2. An alluring, mysterious woman.
hee hee, the first description sounds like me if you say "compromising" and "dangerous" in quotation marks.

I think if your more comfortable with the word FemDom make it yours! You never know maybe you will start a new landslide of people using your term. I have actually heard many people go back and forth using synonyms for their role here. A label should be a like a comfortable cup of coffee. It should be easily understood and eye opening..  Ahhhh

Someone I know was thinking of presenting a class involving the words "Dom/Domme."  He asked what we all thought of the title, and my husband had a good point.  Adding a feminine ending is almost always a way of causing the word to become diminutive in English.  We don't say, "Your Honorette" to a female judge, and we don't say, "Officerette" to a female cop.  So calling a female dominant something other than Dominant (without her first suggesting you call her something else) is rather insulting.
Plus, I think "Domme" is just being lazy.  If you really feel the need to emphasize that this is a woman, even just "female Dom" is only 4 keystrokes more!
