In another thread, someone mentioned the social conspiracy to keep poor people from becoming financially successful. The Welfare Reform Act is such a perfect example of this I thought the matter deserved its own thread.

Before the Welfare Reform Act, people could attend college or trade school while receiving public assistance. After the Welfare Reform Act, students were cut off assistance and told they had to work 40 hours a week even if they were attending college or trade school. Many students were forced to either start attending part-time which cut back their grants or quit altogether. With the amount of homework college professors require, it's very difficult to work 40 hours a week and get decent grades. Add an infant or a toddler that's into everything and that makes it impossible. Few people want their tax dollars to support freeloaders making no effort to get out of the system. But these people weren't doing that or they wouldn't have been in college or trade school. I'm all for forcing freeloaders off of public assistance but college and trade school students are not freeloaders. The fact that students were affected by the Welfare Reform Act proves existance of the social conspiracy. In this global economy, Americans have to compete with citizens of countries where college is paid for by the government. This part of the Welfare Reform Act needs to be changed.

It's true that in this economy, some degrees are worthless. But a list of approved degrees would solve that problem alot better than denying benefits to students. Plus parents having good careers would reduce the number of people needing welfare in the future because those parents would have the money to pay for their offspring's education and families would have more money to help each other during hard times.

This depends on the state you live in... the states had discretion on how they defined "work seeking activities"

I live in Kansas. Before the Welfare Reform Act, I knew a guy who got his girlfriend pregnant while still in high school. They married and went to college while on public assistance. Years later, when I was in my third trimester of pregnancy and temporarily on public assistance, I told them I wanted to do the same thing and was told I couldn't. I had to work 40 hours a week regardless of whether or not I was attending college or trade school because of the Welfare Reform Act. The best they could offer me was a three month training course for a job that paid $10/hr. One of my teachers was a social work case manager when the reform went into effect and he told about the college students he had to cut off. He thought it was wrong, but that was what the Welfare Reform Act required and he had no choice.

Do what I did, get scholarships, grants, and student loans......

If you have decent grades you should be able to swing a 4 year degree... lots of us do it with no help, except maybe medical aid....

I was in better shape living off student aid then I was waiting tables.... sad but true, I got laid off every winter when our town shut down anyways.... this was why I went back to school, after welfare reform. i could have gotten state aid had I pushed for it, but I didn't want the government in my personal business and I did not want to account for where I live, and whether or not I choose to have a boyfriend spend the night, etc....

Exactly why is this topic coming up now? Is there a Welfare Reform Act that passed at some state/federal level of the US or some other country? Or is there currently a bill 'on the table' to put this concept in to law?

She is voicing the impact of the loss of these programs on those who are seeking a college education. Considering the lack of jobs in this country it is a relevant thread.

This is correct. California would even give recipients money for books, gas and daycare. At least until the state went broke.
