America has the best healthcare system in the world and they get what they pay for, value for money - not.

100,000 Americans Die Each Year from Prescription Drugs, While Pharma Companies Get Rich

Prescription drugs taken as directed kill 100,000 Americans a year. That's one person every five minutes. How did we get here?

That`s huge. And at the same time, repugs are trying to limit our rights to sue .Which is our only real protection from predator capitalists.

I wonder what the connection is?[8|]

That is nothing. A quarter million people die each year because of mistakes made in hospitals. And that is from the AMA estimate, who knows how many are left out of that because the fox guards the henhouse.

The weekend it was dark, late at night and I tripped and fell backwards on a tree stump yielding a nasty bruise and some pain. My people have offered me everything up to and including oxycotin (not codone). I don't want any of it, even for free. I'd rather have a beer.

People don't get it, this is a drug oriented society, and my Mother said so twenty years ago. I agree. You put "just say no to drugs" ads on TV and then before and after there are drug ads. And these are not for cancer and shit, they are for depression or a headache. My family discovered years ago that headaches go away on their own usually. If they are induced by high BP or negative sinus pressure whatever, fix the damn problem, not the symptom. If you are depressed because you can't play the violin, try the guitar. If you are depressed because you can't walk find a way to become mobile somehow.

The problem is partly the drug companies, but the people are what makes the scam work. As long as people think the answer to all of life's problems are at the pharmacy the scam will go on. If we stop, they stop. They will have no choice. Why do drugs cost so much more here in the US ? Because of a simple law of economics. I'm sure you have heard of supply, but in this case the eminent factor is DEMAND.

Now how hard was that to figure out ?

It’s capitalism gone wild. All they care to do is maximize profits for Wall Street and they are never satisfied wanting better profits all the time, no matter the consequences, no matter who gets sick or dies. Too much of anything is no good.

I guess the connection is money – they do whatever they need to do to protect their profit.

I expect the true figure to be far higher than that.

People often might do better to choose an honorable death rather than take prescription drugs.

Simple solution...Don't fucking abuse the shit.

And they say guns kill people[8|]

Its not just demand. The doctors will try to push drugs on you whether or not you want or need them.  The pharmaceutical companies pay doctors to push their new drugs off on patients so they can get new people hooked on them. Its the same drug racket that is run in the streets and it has the same results. Prescription drug addiction is rampant in this country. Now on the streets we arrest drug dealers, but no one is policing the corporate drug dealers pushing unnecessary prescription drugs onto consumers.  Its hypocrisy.

This is news?

Shit happens.

People will sniff glue if they want to get high- and the glue can kill them.

agreed, but why are filling up the prisons with the private drug dealers but allowing the pharmaceutical fat cats to peddle as much crack as they want to.

I agree 100%.

I am for least effective dose.   Some of this is on the patient to ask questions and to look it up themself.

I am afraid to even say this on this tread.

Working in the group homes I learned people have the right to not be over medicated.

Lipitor was frying my liver.  I was also on 3 meds that they found to be harmful.

I choose to participate in my treatment.  If other do not then that is on them.

Uh, Term?  Migraines are genetic and are due to neurotransmitter problems in the brain.  Will they go away on their own?  Maybe after 3 days, during which you're flat on your ass wishing someone'd shoot you.  You can't get rid of the "root cause" without a brain transplant - or medication.  Or by getting rid of the stormy weather or getting your ovaries removed (for some women).

And I'd rather take drugs for autoimmune diseases than end up dead a lot sooner.

So please, don't tell some of us that it's all a scam.

Termyn8or -> RE: 100,000 Americans Die Each Year from Prescription Drugs, While Pharma Companies Get Rich (6/30/2010 1:23:25 AM)

I know there is a difference between a migraine and a regular headache. I got a frigging DUI trying to get the Woman a prescription she needed to supposedly prevent a migraine, that she has after getting released from the hospital on a Saturday night and has to take before going to bed. It was either that or those pills that cost $31 each. These were twenty bucks and nobody had them and was open closeby.

So I know there is a difference, and I know something of how these $31 pills work. I also know there is no easy substitution for them. So I am aware of the difference and the two grand I will be missing because of it should be a sufficient indication.

But nobody seems to have an answer as to why those pills are $31 each. Do you ? Are they gold plated or something ?

A high fever as an infant can cause migraines as an adult.

No, it doesn't.

Who do you sue when the manufacture of pharmaceuticals are nationalized?

Answer:  Nobody.

While we're on that one, how about insulin? Does termy feel that type 1 diabetics will be just fine without regular doses of insulin, rather than drying up and blowing away if they decide to man out the scam from their Doctors? How about epileptics who need a scrip for anticonvulsants to avoid dancing the dying fly every time the picture on the telly rolls?

Who's ever nationalised the manufacture of pharmaceuticals?

Answer: nobody.

(Nice strawman you have there.)

marie2 -> RE: 100,000 Americans Die Each Year from Prescription Drugs, While Pharma Companies Get Rich (6/30/2010 2:46:07 PM)

Prescription drugs come with all the possible side affects listed on them. And if you aren't satisfied with the information on the insert, medications can be researched on the internet for information on the likelihood of addiction and what the withdrawal symptoms may be. You can also find TONS of consumer reviews on medications; effectiveness, pros and cons that some people have experienced with a particular medication. etc etc.

Depending on a person's malady, they may feel that the benefit of the medication outweighs the risk of the possible side effects, even if that means death in a small percentage.

It comes down to the consumer making the choice to take the medications or not.
