I disagree with this. I think red light cameras are about making dangerous intersections safer. Revenue generation was a byproduct. Whilst making things safer (and statistics almost always bear this out) they do generate revenue for the local economy. Once they cost more revenue to administer than they are generating (and that always eventually seems to happen) they usually are turned off. I still feel the underlying purpose is safety and not revenue generation. It's just basic economics that cash strapped municipalities have to disconnect them. Every intersection I have seen them at around here really needed them badly. It wasn't just a cash cow.

Why is it so terribly inconvenient to have to stop at a stoplight? Even if it is in the night and in the middle of nowhere. Does it really hamper you so much if you have to wait for a couple of minutes?

Yes, it is not something that most will enjoy overmuch, but I really do not believe that is such an imposition that it is worth fretting and grumbling about.
