There's a load of cctv all over the uk at the moment, it's one of the initiatives that the last conservative government was very fond of and which the Americans on here seem oblivious to. Funny that.

Neatly overlooking the fact that the majority of camera were installed after 1997 under New Labour.

Fair point. I don't see ravin' Dave talking about doing away with the wretched things though.

I got poor lil hunky mad.

Aneirin -> RE: CCTV (closed circuit terrorist vision) (6/30/2010 12:16:29 PM)

I believe there was a study recently to show the claimed reasons for watching the pople via cctv have turned out to be a failure. the reason for the installation was cited to reduce crime.

Fair enough they might help a bit towards convicting a felon, but stopping the crime in the first place, doubtful.

The onus should be on stopping crime, not helping with the convictions for crime as that does diddly squat for victims and people who become victims.

Moonhead -> RE: CCTV (closed circuit terrorist vision) (6/30/2010 12:41:28 PM)

It does fuck all to cause convictions in most cases as well.

Has cctv in London actually done anything to diminish the crime rate?  Or is it just giving the watchers a front row seat to witnessing the crimes?

It's achieved bugger all, by most accounts. It's tricky to identify somebody from cctv footage, for a start. Then there's the shortage of people to keep an eye on the footage as it comes in...

I should think you Brits would love posing for camera as much as we do. What's the problem? [8|]

That it costs a fortune and achieves fuck all. It's rather like your Congress.

Come now MH! This project in Birmingham achieved a great deal in terms of pissing off the Muslims it was aimed at. Money well spent I reckon.

It annoyed a lot of people, but I don't think it's sent anybody down yet.

LadyEllen -> RE: CCTV (closed circuit terrorist vision) (6/30/2010 2:28:44 PM)

Oh it would have, dont worry. You know what them Muslim types are like. Just a matter of time before one of them asks for a copy of the bus timetable - "information of use to terrorists".

Or he steps on the crack in the pavement.

Back in 2007/8 the Police in London admitted CCTV solved only 3% of street robberies. New Labour and Local councils of all parties thought CCTV was the answer to everything and as way they could decrease costs by having less beat bobbies. Criminals just moved to areas not covered by CCTV. There are a few new systems around which analyse car number plates and known faces, this may work but its new technology.

Aneirin -> RE: CCTV (closed circuit terrorist vision) (6/30/2010 6:47:34 PM)

The cctv idea was a bullshit idea, it was more to do with watching people than anything else, the authoritarian eye.

I did wonder why it was I kept getting approached by security guards, then it clicked, I wear a wide brimmed hat most of the time, the security cameras cannot see my face.

AnimusRex -> RE: CCTV (closed circuit terrorist vision) (6/30/2010 7:38:50 PM)

As much as I admire the British and believe there is much we can learn from them (mostly on how to wind down an Empire) this is one idea I wish would stay on that side of the pond.

CCTV was used to fight crime in the US some 20 years before over here. We just copied you and got carried away.
