I agree Moloch, they are very different, however, I think what the OP was getting at was wondering if there was a connection in the interests, since there is often an element of role playing in both. My active participation in RPGs preceded my active participation in BDSM by decades, however not my interest. I came to RPGs from the old Avalon Hill board games, however I have been interested in BDSM since a very early age. I was not aware of it way back when, however in my late teens I discovered that my parents were into kink (though they are still closeted kinksters), so perhaps there is some genetic predisposition, or maybe a subtle set of clues in my early nurturing. Myself, I think that the only real corelation between BDSM and RPGs in that the practitioners of both seem to be roughly from the same general type of people. Intelligent, free-thinking, and open to the possibility that things are not always what they seem....and having an active & powerful imagination not bound to the conventional. However, as soon as I clicked OK to post this something dawned on me: I am a dominant, and I played D&D 2 times, and then started being the DM, and have always been the DM since....so perhaps there is some connection, at least between my BDSM orientation and my niche within the RPG world.
