cuckoldmepls -> Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 10:15:40 AM)

We have unsubstantiated reports that the Gulf Sea Floor and Coral sea is rising which if true, would indicate a massive explosion is imminent. Perhaps the next time the moon is at it's maximum gravitational pull for that part of the planet. It would be the result of an underwater volcano or simply a pressure buildup that has been unleashed into less restrictive sediments.

If this happens a massive tsunami will be released washing over all of Florida and the Gulf Coastal areas. In fact, New Orleans will be wiped out again.

There's also another report that 2 buoy's in the Coral Sea by Australia have also registered significant rises in the ocean floor. Stand by folks, mother nature is about to fart on us. and show us it's not nice to mess with mother nature.

I would recommend you get plenty of cash out of the bank if you are living in these areas so you can rapidly evacuate if warnings go public. Otherwise you will be caught in a massive traffic jam. It might be a good time to go on vacation too.

Could this be the 2012 end of the world disaster that some people think will happen ? Maybe BP can take that built up sediment and underwater bulldoze it over the oil leak.

Hey.... there is that line for people to call with their ideas to plug the leak... this sounds no more crazy to me than many other ideas, like shooting golf balls into it or nuking it

Well, it's no more ridiculous than your political and economic theories.

Actually he's garbling an actual concern of some geologists. The deposit that the Deepwater Horizon drilled into is unusually methane rich (40% of what is coming out the leak is methane). The deposits overlaying the deposit are fairly brittle and the blowout may have fracture the surrounding rock. The huge amount of methane under substantial pressure could force these cracks open and cause a catostrophic release of the entire deposit directly into the Gulf.

That could cause tsunami all along the coast and off course methane is poisonous and displaces oxygen in air so it could result in an invisible cloud of death drifting around the region.

thornhappy -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 4:34:11 PM)

There are geologists and climatologists looking into the mass release of methane hydrates as the source of rapid global warming events in the geologic past.  There's a huge stash of hydrates off the east coast (just over the shelf), and if those ever let go there'd be a whole lot of concern.

BTW, anyone seen a good source for that info?  The earliest one I can find quotes a guy who was on AM Coast to Coast (gods help us).  Everything else I'm finding is sourced to nothing but suspicions.

No, it all traces back to that lunatic on the radio. Richard Hoagland is his name. He's a notorious conspiracy nut, who claims there are alien colonies on the moon and that NASA uses their anti-gravity technology for the space program. For whatever that's worth.

I found this via Google.
University of Georgia Marine Scientist Says Gulf of Mexico's Methane Gas Concentration Is Greatest She Has Ever Seen

thornhappy -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 7:09:02 PM)

The sourced article is from the 6/9/10 WSJ, and the reason she's getting such high levels is that she's sampling in one of the subsurface plumes.  It's "the highest she's ever seen" compared to normal ocean water, not necessarily due to fracture of the rock.

Jumping from this info to "omg, the sea floor's about to blow" is a reeeeal long jump.

Lucylastic -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 7:19:23 PM)

the sea rising 13 foot in australia happened in march thru april because of quakes in the area
http://usahitman.com/?p=3844
is the original scare page
but at
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/
you can search the records by date, it has all the heights for 15 minute intervals  Even tho the figures on the particular buoy are out of whack for a large part, they are back down to "normal levels"

paranoia paranoia paranoia
thy name is ignorance

thornhappy -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 7:45:26 PM)

Yep, that's about what you'd expect, like the bulging in the Yellowstone caldera.

Jeffff -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 7:47:46 PM)

That's how I used to be refered too.

"Look at Jeff he is bulging like the yellowstone caldera"

thornhappy -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 8:00:13 PM)

Is it a low bulge or a "peaky" bulge?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Jeffff -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 8:02:43 PM)

Well it starts low.... and then goes all peaky.

Geologists have expressed some concern.

The Yellowstone bulge only blows every 600,000 years or so. How's your social life lately?

DomKen -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (6/30/2010 9:21:50 PM)

Sorry guys I thought this had better sourcing. should know better than to believe anything science related from HuffPo

Well the up side is....when it blows.... it REALLY blows!

sappatoti -> RE: Gulf Sea Floor Rising Is Explosion Imminent? (7/1/2010 4:25:58 AM)

I found a couple of references in a quick search I did, neither of which directly back up the HuffPo piece.

One is a video from the History Channel series, Mega Disasters, and it shows what might happen should there be a massive methane gas eruption and explosion from deep within an ocean. This scenario is based upon work done by Northwestern University's Gregory Ryskin:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25BE42PzZZc&feature=player_embedded

Note the video segment has nothing to do with what's happening in the Gulf of Mexico at present. It shows what might happen in any one of the world's oceans, given the current research done by Ryskin.

The other piece I found came from Reuters:

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE65L6IA20100622

and is based upon current research being carried out by Texas A&M University oceanography professor John Kessler. He and his crew are measuring the amounts of methane gas found in the Gulf in a small radius around the blown out Deep Horizon wellhead. I saw nothing in this piece where Kessler was trying to prove that a massive methane-based explosion was about to happen, thus I believe it cannot be used to back up any such assertions. Kessler apparently is just taking measurments at this point.
