What has America done right in your eyes? (Inspiration came from Art, thanks)

And keep in mind, America is much more than just the government.

LMAO Cin....that's CERCKL who likes the turkish coffee.... not level.

Level... lately... not much. Everytime I turn on the TV, news, there's another reality tv show... another marine dies for this personal war of Bush's. Gas prices are rising again. So not lately has anything been done right. But i'm sure now that I feel it's hit bottom.... there's only one way to go.... and that's back up... just hopefully that's soon!!!

Great topic for thought though. Thanks.

Nooooo!!! It's ... erm ... against my ... um, religion, yeah religion, to inspire conservatives! :)

Cut/paste from the other thread with my list of goodness:
What has America done right? We have (unless they fubar it & go for amnesty, again) one of the best immigration systems in the world. We have a low unemployment rate. The Fed has kept the economy remarkably balanced. Despite the sharply limited rights (compared to the Constitution's promises), we enjoy a remarkable freedom in the United States. The internet we're using right now was the baby of American military men and academics. The United States has some of the most advanced medical care available in the world. We have a justice system that while perverted by the influence of money is exceedingly fair in comparison with almost any court system on the planet. We toppled the Taliban. We lead the NATO offensive against Milosovic. We fostered a wonderful environment for the tech boom. We've demanded greater accountability and internal policing at the UN. We provide a staggering amount of foreign aid. We're free to vote our conscience, even if the candidate is a member of the KKK, the tinfoil skywatcher club or the Communist Party (roughly all in the same neighborhood of loony by my count). I'm free enough here to say our President is a dirty rotten coke addled scumbag of a cockroach turd without facing jail or civil penalties. The list of good reaches just as far as the list of bad.

Adding to it:
America broke the back of the USSR who could not afford to keep pace with the modernization and military technology of the United States.

The United States has a *volunteer* military (and a damn fine one at that).

The States have carefully avoided most of the socialist and fascist pitfalls that plague many Western nations.

I can be any religion that doesn't drive me to harm others (or involves drug use) and the government will even protect my rights if I'm fired for being a Wiccan (witch), for example. (Actually the SCOTUS ruled on that very religion in 1985, reaffirming the near complete freedom of practice.)

*meow*

Cin, I only regret that I have one thread to give for my country (nods heroically).

Out of all the developed nations in the world, the US gives the most financial assistance to other countries. Aid we know will never be repaid.

Errrr, I knew that, silly!! I just figured he'd be along eventually, and I can handle the plain coffee, but you haven't taught me how to make the other stuff, yet!!

Okay, I should shut up now, or Level is gonna be maaaaad at me for hijacking his thread.

On the subject at hand, I can only say, that as a Canadian, it's hard for me to find something positive to say about American politics right now. But, I know there are some great people living on the other side of the border, and so I hope for their sakes things start looking up.

I'll try, really hard, to behave now, but I can't make promises. LOL

But Art... I'm not a conservative (except when I am lol)... seriously, my beliefs are all over the map, including favoring the legalization of sex work, gay marriage, and marijuana. I also want to see the end of the death penalty and almost all abortions, a raising of the minimum wage, maintaining a strong military, eliminating most of the tax code and regulations that choke business. Etcetera lol.

Thanks for the input, much of value there.

Okay, first of all, to not like coffee is just...wrong and unthinkable, dare I say, even evil and, and, anti-American??? I'm shocked beyond words!!! ::straps a pillow to my ass in preparation for the fall-out::

Okay, I am really between Scylla & Charybdis here. If I say something nice I might ruin the image of Canadians being anti-American, if I don't say anything nice, I might actually appear anti-American! Tough call.

All joking aside, I have a hard time separating America from its politics, and I will humbly put that down to ignorance on my part. Living here so close to you all means our view is a bit skewed, I think. Forest for the trees, and all.

Do I believe that America has done some things right. In theory, of course I do. Can I rattle them off the top of my head? No. I'm afraid that's drowned out by the fact that America still refuses to allow gays to marry, even though 5 other world powers have done so, and still has a health care system that only appears to help the rich, resulting in too many people not having access to the amazing medical technology that was mentioned earlier.

Dang, i don't want to come off as negative, in a post which is meant to be positive. What I can promise is that I will continue to read this thread and hope to have my mind changed. It has happened, before. LOL

On a positive note: America sure inspires loyalty in its citizens, and raises some great folks. I applaud that.

Can I suggest that much of that "amazing medical technology" is brought to the world by American scientists and inventors?.... *winks*.... I think there are indeed things that you'd find good and done right by us, given time to dwell on it.

I love Canada, by the way. I believe all deserve health care, but I see negatives in the huge state-run systems as well as ours.

Coffee.............ehhhhh. lol...

Not to take all your claims on at once, but I think its a serious mistake to take Republican Party Propaganda as TRUTH. The USSR's destiny was shaped by internal reforms, new initiatives by Gorbachev, populist movements in Eastern Europe and the Baltics, and Yeltsin on a Tank in front of the Parliment Building. These all had about as much to do with US military spending as rain does with keeping dry. The US cold war mentality in WASHINGTON was behind the curve, not ahead of it. Star WARS and the Reagain Nuclear missile buildup was just tax dollars pissed down the drain, or better stated, were the products of think tanks beholden to the defense industry.

In many ways we have an EXCELLENT immigration system that essentially cherry picks the best talent from around the world to come the US and work and live here. I also think our policy of Asylum is a good one. I think our policy of (J Visas) exchange workers and (H1B) non immigrant workers is also a very good one in terms of helping our own work force and businesses and in terms of enculturating foreigners into the American Way.

Policing the border and preventing/dealing with illegal immigration is a problem much greater than our "immigration system." This is a socio-economic and poltical issue that's quite complex.

As for the BCIS --- its quite the Bureacratic nightmare IMO.

I agree with you that medical technology is a boon. We both know the pros and cons of that technology, of course, but in general I am all for living to be over 100 years old, (as long as I retain quality of life) and so I'm in favour.

Absolutely, and trust me in the last few years my heart has suffered several deep beatings over the way our health care system has been managed. However, I don't believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater. My answer is not to throw away our health care system but to heal it.

1) It really is a land of opportunity, even granting some major disparities in available opportunities for different folk...
2)The constitution/justice system is great when applied justly.
3)Women's rights are decent, as I know it could be much worse...  Also know it could be much better if women didn't compete so much against one another.
There is lots more, but these are the majors for moi.   M
