Youre Canadian. Who cares. [X(] You obviously didnt care enough to listen to his speech, or if you did are clueless as to the history of the Statue of Liberty. I would hope that the level of education amongst Americans is high enough that they dont need to be spoon fed.

Lucylastic -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 11:03:41 AM)

OOOOH snappy comeback...you've completely lost your touch,[sm=applause.gif](golf clap)

Mercnbeth -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 11:05:50 AM)

I know this is a big vacation week and not many people are paying attention; but was it just me who heard Obama's latest campaign speech and though it was a summer rerun of George Bush's speech on the same subject a few years ago?

CHRIST - the man is so lost he can't even go back on a campaign commitment without borrowing from the same playbook of his predecessor.

No I didnt see the speech, If I had, I might have understood where you were coming from, as it is, you just put it out there, like bait, I bit harder than you can stand, now you are assuming again. sad little man.

Scheherazade -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 11:17:37 AM)

I was just reading that on Yahoo about his speech at Georgetown Uni.
Colleges are probably the only place he can now speak at and mention "comprehensive immigration reform" without being booed off the stage.
Imagine if he tried that at a shopping mall or a town hall meeting in New Hampshire?
You should see the "replies" to that article in Yahoo! There must be "two Americas" the REAL America and "Obama's America."
He of course doesn't mention the word "amnesty". Very odd that he'd want to do something that 95% of the American People are against.
He could put Troops along that Mexican border and have it closed within 48 hours but, no mention of that of course!
He could hire 40,000 more Ice officers for the country instead of the 4,400 we currently have but no mention of that of course!
He could start prosecuting people and business that hire illegal aliens but no mention of that either!
Lots of calls for "Impeachment" on that Yahoo board.
And, his poll numbers keep dropping!

I was born in Texas, raised in California. Totally 100% United States National but I live in Milan, don't have television yet, no radio and didn't even have any power for 6 hours today. When I goggle my G3 card throws up and kicks me off line. I would really appreciate a link if you don't mind. Thanks in advance.

Milan...awesome place (except when the power is out!).

"It was at this time that a young woman named Emma Lazarus, whose own family fled persecution from Europe generations earlier, took up the cause of these new immigrants. Although she was a poet, she spent much of her time advocating for better healthcare and housing for the newcomers. And inspired by what she saw and heard, she wrote down her thoughts and donated a piece of work to help pay for the construction of a new statue -- the Statue of Liberty -- which actually was funded in part by small donations from people across America.

Years before the statue was built -- years before it would be seen by throngs of immigrants craning their necks skyward at the end of long and brutal voyage, years before it would come to symbolize everything that we cherish -- she imagined what it could mean. She imagined the sight of a giant statue at the entry point of a great nation -– but unlike the great monuments of the past, this would not signal an empire. Instead, it would signal one's arrival to a place of opportunity and refuge and freedom. "

Of course the Statue was donated by the French, not funded by Emma Lazarus or anyone across America. Also, the Statue had absolutely nothing to do with immigration, it was to commemorate the Declaration of Independence. Other than that, he's right on.

tazzygirl -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 11:40:13 AM)

Hey Bita... here is a snip of his speech pertaining to the statue of liberty

quote:

One of the largest waves of immigration in our history took place little more than a century ago. At the time, Jewish people were being driven out of Eastern Europe, often escaping to the sounds of gunfire and the light from their villages burning to the ground. The journey could take months, as families crossed rivers in the dead of night, traveled miles by foot, endured a rough and dangerous passage over the North Atlantic. Once here, many made their homes in a teeming and bustling Lower Manhattan.

It was at this time that a young woman named Emma Lazarus, whose own family fled persecution from Europe generations earlier, took up the cause of these new immigrants.

"Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand," she wrote,

A mighty woman with a torch…

From her beacon-hand

Glows worldwide welcome…

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!"…

"Give me your tired, and your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to be free…

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Let us remember these words. For it falls on each generation to ensure that that lamp -- that beacon -- continues to shine as a source of hope around the world, and a source of our prosperity here at home.

Thank you. God bless you. And may God bless the United States of America. Thank you.

I dont have time to respond to this properly as work calls. Im sure there are enough on these boards to shed some light on what willbe is referring too.

BitaTruble -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 11:52:30 AM)

Thank you both very much and thanks for the link! I feel so news deprived and being an addict, can't get my fix. On the positive side, we got our Sky box which Himself will install when he gets back from Portugal so as of Monday, I should have US Television once again .,. you know.. provided we have power of course. heheh

This part was in reference to Emma, not the statue.

And you actually think that she imagined a great statue, before it was conceived by France? lmao

juliaoceania -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 12:00:38 PM)

You must have completely run out of real things to bitch about, so you are forced to complain about a stump speech...

All I can say is, it must indeed be a luxury to have so little to concern yourself that you can obsess on stupid shit like this

DomKen -> RE: Obama needs a history lesson (7/1/2010 12:01:05 PM)

It's a little garbled but essentially correct. Emma Lazarus wrote "The New Colossus" before the Statue was erected, in 1883. She donated the poem as part of the fund raising for building the pedastal on which the statue stands. Anyone can read "The New Colossus" and see that she considered the Statue to be more than a commemoration of the Declaration.

Too bad France didnt.

Anytime someone has nothing more than this for people to bitch about, things must be going well.

The most ridiculous thing is, there is ample things to complain about, I mean we have some really really big stuff to complain about... I have to wonder why he isn't going for the more obvious stuff (unemployment, destroyed gulf region, two wars, etc etc etc)

Because Obamas incompetence in those areas is already well documented and is highlighted by his need to resort to embellishment of history to try and sell what will be another failure of his.
