jlf1961 -> School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 11:45:37 AM)

Has anyone noticed that Christian Holidays are recognized by school districts and the government, Muslim holidays are not?

quote:

“One in every eight school kids in the City of New York observes the Muslim faith,” New York City Comptroller John Liu said in a statement issued yesterday by the Coalition for Muslim School Holidays. “Yet these students are forced to choose between their education and their faith, and it’s a situation that needs to be rectified.” In addition all the presidents of New York’s five boroughs have sent letters of support to our coalition, while Public Advocate Bill de Blasio support the City Council resolution recognizing Muslim holidays. “About 12 percent of New York City students are Muslim,” says de Blasio, “and consequently thousands of students miss exams and important activities because they are scheduled on Muslim holidays. The Department of Education should treat these students equally and include the two main Islamic holidays in the school calendar, just as it does with other major religions.” It was a beautiful thing to stand amongst a diverse group of people yesterday in support of a cause that really goes beyond a holiday. I’m looking forward to the day that it’s celebration—not contention—that brings us together. Who knows? Maybe it’ll even be on Eid.

Recently the New York City Council voted for the schools to recognize Muslim holidays, and yet Mayor Bloomberg decided against it.

The same is true for Jewish Holidays, I know of no school district in America where Jewish holidays are recognized.

The question, If the holidays of one religion is recognized by schools and government should not all religious holidays be recognized?

All school districts allow for absence for religious holidays regardless of the faith. Christmas is taken off because it is a Federal holiday.

Should all religious holidays be Federal holidays? Only if you live in France.

They have renamed easter and christmas vacation to spring and winter recess... true they do plan these vacations around religious holidays, but Jews celebrate Hanukkah and Passover during these times. In fact there are many other religions that celebrate the spring equinox and the winter solstice, which was partly the reason why christians adopted these holidays in the first place. I believe christmas pageants, etc have been discontinued in public schools, also..

In addition to the above, Muslim students can take time from school for religious celebrations, these are considered excused absences

Amen to that.  All of it.  They're winter and spring break/recess/vacation now.  The mention of the solstice and equinox holidays are also a nice little addition.  As a practicing Pagan, I point that out to my less confrontational Christian friends who bitch about Christmas break being too short.  -Shrugs.-  I'll still say Merry Christmas, though.

DarlingSavage -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 4:16:48 PM)

What about Jewish holidays, Pagan holidays, Buddhist holidays and Hindi holidays? Muslims aren't the only ones being left out.

Vendaval -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 4:30:46 PM)

Over the years what was called "Christmas" break has become "Winter Break" and so on. Either have the breaks not be specific to a particular religion or allow all of them.

Or...not allow them at all.  -Shrugs.-  I was able to take off for Solstice every year if I wanted to.  Of course, I chose not to because I was scared shitless of what my father would have said.  ^_^  Anyone can take off for a legitimate holiday and be excuse for it.

LadyCimarron -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 4:44:39 PM)

Here we do not recognize any religious holiday. We take "semester breaks" and "student days." Any student of any religious faith can take off for religious observances, with parent approval, and it will not count against them.

thornhappy -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 4:54:29 PM)

Anyone here from NYC?  I thought awhile back they'd take off Rosh Hoshana and Yom Kippur just because a lot of students would be absent.

I worked at a company once where I swapped the day after Thanksgiving (a vacation day)  for one of the solstices.

TheHeretic -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 6:55:31 PM)

A while back, I heard about some sort of movement towards trading Labor Day for Eid Al Fitr (the end of Ramadan). One thing that makes it problematic is that the exact date varies from year to year. I could be wrong on this, but I think the exact date is determined by some panel of religious leaders, and announced pretty late in the game. It was supposed to fall on 9/11 a few years back, but was rescheduled to the 12th.

Whatever. I celebrate the American cultural holiday of Christmas without all the Christian trappings, and ignore Easter. As long as nobody tries to tell me I can't drink booze and slow cook meat on my non-kosher grill, I'll take an end of summer 3-day weekend, no matter what they call it.

littlewonder -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 7:00:17 PM)

many schools, colleges, places of business give days off for jewish holidays in NYC.

They are recognized in some NJ districts, but I can't say all of them, as I am not sure about any others except the ones where I have lived. There are school closings for two of the Jewish holidays.

As far as the others....I guess it comes down to a population thing....maybe in areas where there are many Muslims, they do have closings. I don't know. We can't start closing school for every single religion under the sun, or the kids wouldn't meet their days per year requirement.

No religious holiday should be recognized by the government.  The whole thing is a joke.  Jefferson would be sick to his stomach.

Well there are other things to consider when talking about public schools. Since there are so many religious students who would be observing their holidays and taking these days off, the classrooms would be close to empty. It hardly makes sense to even have school in session.

What's the big deal?  We are largely a Christian nation by numbers.  So accept that.

As they say, when in Rome...

pahunkboy -> RE: School Holidays, biased toward Christians? (7/1/2010 8:47:40 PM)

Based on the state of education- school should be year round.   We are loosing first place in science- math and so forth - as other countries are outdoing us.

The post office also takes too many holidays.

We should get rid of Columbus Day.  Presidents day- MLK day.... flag day, veterans day, and memorial day- the 4rth also should go.   Essentially we really only need 3.  Thanksgiven- Christmas and New Years.  Anything beyond that- is redundant.

<---- Shout out to all the teachers off for the summer!!!
[sm=mrpuffy.gif]

Ask most teachers how they feel about year round school, their answer will be:  NO WAY!!!!!

I do think that FREE summer school should be an available for all students in public school.

Students should be able to take academic and non-academic classes FREE for about 4 weeks during the summer.

Classes like:  English, Math, Science, Physical Education, Music, and Foreign Languages.

These classes would be taught by teachers that want to teach summer school.
Believe me there are plenty of people that would LOVE to teach summer school, and allow the teachers that do not want to work, to enjoy their summer.

"No religious holiday should be recognized by the government.  The whole thing is a joke.  Jefferson would be sick to his stomach."

Agreed, but how to deal with this ?

Red days. Upon admission to a school or a job you get so many red days per year, which must be declared right up front. No scheduled tests on those days, no specail school events. No nothing. Every other day is up for grabs for these things.

But I say every ENROLLED student or employee actually HIRED. And that is actually discrimination in and of itself. But if we want to all get along, I believe that some discrimination must exist. To think that we can wish it away is foolish.

But people have a hard time admitting that.

And don't forget, I am no fan of holidays. I don't care, it means holy day on it's face and root. No day is holier than another and until this biomass grows out of this bullshit we are going to have these problems. But then I want my red days as well. So I just pick and choose. Just give me the schedule for anything important, like tests and who knows and that is that. That would pretty much take care of the Agnostics and Atheists as well. Say you get 20 red days. Take them when you want. They build the schedule to avoid all of them listed. If not listed you take your chances by taking them at will. That simple. Take your Dad's birthday, that day in the park, whatever. That trip to wherever.

That's probably as about as fair as it gets. And screw summer school, nobody likes that. Just if you are going to purport to accomodate everyone, do it. Do it right.

Even then you still can't please everyone. But they don't even try all that much. What about Kwanzaa ? I couldn't care less about it but some do. I don't even know the date. Well just tell them at the beginning and they try not to screw you up.

And don't expect perfection no matter what.

T

Im curious as to why Jefferson would be sick when he gave his own slaves a christmas holiday. Just askin

ETA

Even though in the mid-18th Century Christmas was considered a normal workday, Jefferson always considered the day (even in his youth) as a time of “merriment” and “The day of greatest mirth and jollity.” Monticello became known as a place where friends and family got together to celebrate Christmas and where Jefferson would feel happy enjoying his favorite Christmas song, “Adeste Fideles” (“Oh. Come All Ye Faithful”).

As president in 1805, six of his grandchildren and 100 of their friends – invited by Secretary of State James Madison’s wife, Dolley, who acted as official hostess – made for a tremendously enjoyable holiday party at which Jefferson played the violin for the dancing children. Christmas celebrations at the Jefferson White House were festive affairs where delicacies and local American foods were served. Joyful Christmas partying continued at Monticello in 1809 following the end of the Jefferson presidency earlier that year. Celebrations at Jefferson’s beautiful home included social intercourse amongst friends and relatives and the serving of a Christmas favorite, mince pies. The hanging of Christmas stockings and the decorating of evergreen trees had not yet become the norm like those traditions are today.

Although he was a slave owner, Jefferson’s abolitionist leanings ensured that those slaves he owned were treated fairly, as is evidenced by the slaves being allowed to have a Christmas holiday respite for a few days each year. With normal, everyday responsibilities set aside, slaves could travel to and from the Jefferson mansion to visit friends and relatives. For those staying at Monticello for the holiday, slaves were able to enjoy fresh meat instead of the usual cornmeal and pork. Music added to the gaiety of the holiday as well.
