This blog about a group of Christians at a Gay Pride Parade is making the rounds.

Opinions, thoughts, comments?

I Hugged a Man in His Underwear. And I am Proud.

"I spent the day at Chicago’s Pride Parade. Some friends and I, with The Marin Foundation, wore shirts with “I’m Sorry” written on it. We had signs that said, “I’m sorry that Christians judge you,” “I’m sorry the way churches have treated you,” “I used to be a bible-banging homophobe, sorry.” We wanted to be an alternative Christian voice from the protestors that were there speaking hate into megaphones.

I heard them on a radio station in Chicago the day of the parade, seems very level headed people, without all the hate some religious fanatics have

I keep looking in the bible for where JC talked about hating people for their beliefs, or lifestyle and I can't seem to find it.

I'll have to write to the 700 Club and ask

The was done in a movie called "Lord Save Us From Your Followers."  The results there were wonderful as well. It was a really good documentary where Dan Merchant challenged believers to think about the real reasons why so many people hated Christians. I just saw the dvd for the first time today and would highly recommend it.

I think this was a wonderful gesture.
Isn't it better to attempt to bring people together instead of
finding reasons to keep us apart?

Thanks for sharing, Ven.

Thanks for sharing, Vendaval!

One of my favorite co-workers is a young gay male. He gives me "mommy hugs" because he says my hugs feel like a moms would have to him, if he had one. Makes me tear up everytime.

It is the extremists that make a lot of noise that show up on the evening news. Time for sharing some kindness and compassion.

I agree and I wish that more of the people who frequently post to the other religion threads on this forum would at least be big enough to acknowledge this thread and the positive message it sends.

I'm not Christian, but I was one at one time and I found it hard to accept homosexuals.  I find this to be really refreshing that some of the people most-expected to persecute homosexuals are apologizing.  Good for them.

It surprised me very much that this thread did not receive more replies here.

I thought it dovetailed in nicely with Ann Rice's remarks on why she is leaving the church but not Christ, as well as the recent protest against The Westboro Baptist Church at the ComicCon.

I think this is all well and good, but it seems to me that an individual can only apologize for themselves and their own actions.  How can an individual (other that the pope) apologize for the actions of individuals/representatives of the Catholic Church for example?  They can say they are horrified at the actions or they abhor the actions, but an apology isn't worth the air used to voice it.

In this instance, they might have been better off to have placards that said i don't support the actions of xxxx religion  instead of i apologize for the actions of xxxx religion.

I consider myself religious, following the teachings of Christ... and i never had trouble accepting homosexuals.

It works the same in reverse.

Not all members of a Religion do what they are all being accused of...

Muslims is a very good example.

Baptists are another.

Mormons another.

And so on and so forth.

I have for the most part always been accepting of all sexual identities and creeds, what I learned is that in the past I was not always vocal when I heard other people speaking hate.

Today when someone goes about Bashing all people for the actions of some I point out the falacy. And if someone starts bashing gays, especially those who use the bible, get ready for one hell of a debate... I have actually read it. I know what it ACTUALLY says.

Agreed. The actions of militant muslims are disgusting - but not every muslim ascribes to those actions. And they shouldn't have to apologise for the actions of a few.  Like the song says - one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, baby. You just need to weed out the rotten one and the rest will preserve beautifully.

Believe me, i agree with your post - my brother is a Catholic priest and the comments that i hear from people who are ignorant of this fact make my hair curl. I tend not to reply to them because their ignorance is bliss (for them) and why disturb the blissful . Usually they aren't being malicious, just thoughtless.

The people who were doing this had a specific reason for doing it.

You may not think one can apologise for something that someone else did... . I am not sure about that either way, to be honest. Can one apologise by proxy and have it be meaningful for both parties damaged by the actions of a third, if that is the best that can happen?
The sign holders were ashamed. Some by their own homophobia, and some by the actions of other Christians.
The others had been shamed in the past by those the apologists were standing in for (so to speak).

And in the whole of the picture, did it harm or help?

"...Acceptance is one thing. Reconciliation is another. Sure at Pride, everyone is accepted (except perhaps the protestors). There are churches that say they accept all. There are business that say the accept everyone. But acceptance isn’t enough. Reconciliation is.

But there isn’t always reconciliation. And when there isn’t reconciliation, there isn’t full acceptance. Reconciliation is more painful; it’s more difficult. Reconciliation forces one to remember the wrongs committed and relive constant pain. Yet it’s more powerful and transformational because two parties that should not be together and have every right to hate one another come together for the good of one another, for forgiveness, reconciliation, unity.

What I saw and experienced at Pride 2010 was the beginning of reconciliation. It was in the shocked faces of gay men and women who did not ever think Christians would apologize to them. ..."
