It should be here Tuesday.  Its an Iphone 3GS, 8

So what should i expect, what should i be aware of.

My biggest question is -- What about virus protection, do i need it, does it come with it etc?

So for all you iphone dudes and dudettes, any advise would be appreciated as i HATE HATE HATE new techknowlogy and learning all of the new little quirks, all the short cuts to make it easier etc.

I have to say I am not overly impressed with it. Somehow typing whilst on the go was much easier with my Nokia N95...as it is a pain sometimes to touch the right letter...also it keeps changing my letters into words which I did not mean...so whilst it is ok when I am sitting at home or on a bus...on the go it isn't my cup of tea...

It's one of the easiest to learn/understand phones that I've had (and I've had LOADS).

Texting/typing can be a bit of an issue to start with, but most people seem to get used to it fairly quickly.

I was asking my partner if he thought there was virus protection on it, since you can connect to the internet and what not, and he seemed fairly sure that there's something inbuilt . . . I will admit when he started using large computer type words I stopped listening though.

Overall it's my favorite phone so far. I've had mine for a couple of months and can't see myself going back to anything else.

Angel, I'd send you a CMail, but you seem to have no profile, sooooo...

I may perhaps in possibility work for something called a company that may have released a version or two of something identical to the device that you're mentioning, and - alright, just gonna cut the crap there.

Been working for the company for about three years now, after the first iPhone launch, and I've yet to hear either someone call in about their iPhone being hacked or a coworker talking about getting one of those calls. So, I'd assume there's virus protection built in. Best suggestion I can give ya is to go through the manual/device tutorials online and do what it says until you feel you're comfortable with it. Oh, little tip - on the left side of the phone, right above the volume keys is a little switch. If you flip that switch, your phone doesn't ring. So if it's not ringing, make sure that switch isn't flipped! You've got to hold the power button and get a message on the screen to slide to power off to actually shut the phone off - do this if the phone does something screwy, leave it off for 30+ seconds, then power it back on.

If you've got any questions, my inbox is always open.

Short answer: No, you don't really need any and, furthermore, there is none available. Keeping the phone's software up to date is the only measure you should take.

Long answer: The iPhone is a much more restrictive, and therefore secure, environment than a PC, so viruses and spyware aren't something you need to be as concerned about. iPhones require that all code be "signed" by Apple before they will execute it. The signature is a security method (I'll spare you the math) used to guarantee that a program came from Apple's App Store and has not been tampered with since then. Before an application can be distributed in the App Store, it has to be submitted to a review process that screens for, amongst other things, security and privacy issues before granting approval. This makes it very challenging for a would-be attacker to get any malware running on the phone. As further protection, the OS also isolates programs in individual "sandboxes" with limited access to the rest of the system. So, even if one program is compromised, the effect is limited. Finally, while it's not a security feature per se, an iPhone simply does less than a computer, thus presenting a smaller "attack surface" where vulnerabilities can be found.

The end result is that, apart from jailbroken iPhones (where the owner intentionally disabled code signing and enabled ssh) I'm not aware of malware affecting iPhones in the wild.

Still, it's difficult to make a complex system perfect and security experts do still find vulnerabilities occasionally. Notably, a successful hack of an iPhone was demonstrated at CanSecWest in March. Apple periodically issues software updates that include patches for discovered vulnerabilities, so keeping your phone's software up to date is important to maintain its security.

Thanks for the input folks.  It never occured to me until i was getting one that connection to the internet it would be a possibility.  As i haven't heard anyone speak about getting a virus, i thought there was software either on the phone or people got.

I am excited but "scared" lol, as i don't really use my phone for anything other than avoiding calls lol i hate talking on the phone and texting.  But i like the apps idea and i have fun with stuff like that.  I was fine with my old phone except last week the ringer started going funky and i missed three of my bosses texts which is how we communicate when she is in a meeting or court.  SO i said screw it, i am just gonna get an iphone lol.  As i have been looking at phones for a while and none actually get me excited.  I am the type who hates new technology lol and don't have the patience for it.  So we shall see.

I have been reviewing the tutorials and the instructions this weekend, but until i have the phone i won't be able to play with it.

One thing i am bummed about is i have a ringtone for my boss that rings really loudly twice and a voice over that says, you have a call coming in and you ask yourself, shall i or shall i not answer it, only you can make this decision.  And i can't find it again :-(

Anyway, thanks for the input!

Congrats! I love my iphone. I didn't think I would because I try to not answer my phone too. I love the apps. I love being able to browse the web from anywhere. I'm a news and weather junkie so most of my apps are from those areas but they have something for everyone. You'll like it.

Hi! I don't have much in the way of advice on the iphone as I am also new to getting one, but I can say that so far I love it. There are a couple of cool apps that I really love. Send me a message some time and we can further discuss that and maybe even chat on the iphone together if you like. :)
