i think, after being here for awhile, i have a pretty decent handle on the various definitions of sub/slave, and i know what a babygirl is in the Daddy/girl dynamic, but what is a "pet?" i don't mean just animal roleplay, but...a "pet"....? Is it just an affectionate name, or a particular type of sub/slave, or? i'm interested in any and all answers. Please, enlighten me.

Like many other terms, "pet" often has its own definition in each dynamic that uses it. Some include puppy or kitten play, for some pet just is a pet name (sorry for the pun), in some poly relationships the pet may have a special place of honor, etc. That's one of those fun things for a top and bottom to talk about to see if their definitions match.

Obviously, I can only answer for me and mine, but...

Kitten (otherwise known as AquaticSub) is my kitten, and I'm her owner. She's also my sub, and I'm her dom. Because we're both very feline people, we usually go with the former set of terms to describe our relationship, because her behavior in general is very kittenish - pushing the line to see just how much she can get away with, then exploding into paroxysms of cuteness to distract me when she's pushed too far.

While she and I do indulge in kitten-play now and again (she has a ball and some toys that are only used for that particular play type, mostly appropriated cat toys), the term is derived more from the general feel of our relationship than the activity.

One of my partners and Doms uses this term.... for us, it's a mixture of a cute pet name, (pardon the pun) and the connotations of "ownership." Anyway, it's a word he uses when he's pleased with me. Makes me feel all warm and glowy. :-)

For me, a human pet fills the same role an animal pet does, but does it as a human.

He is a quiet companion, one I pat and pet and scratch, teach, train, and cuddle and possibly discipline, but I will still carry on conversations and interact with him as a human being rather than having him play the role of an animal.

Usually there is a little or not traditional play.

A pet is the type of submissive companion I may have sitting quietly at my feet while I read or paint and I may expect him to get up and get me things (fetch) or do small tasks that assist me (change the paint water). He may even do errands or small household tasks.

They key difference is status. For me a day to day submissive is an unequal equal, while a pet is a bit lower down.

Where I live in the UK, 'pet' is an informal way of addressing pretty much anyone.

You might go into a shop and the assistant will say "can I help you, pet?" You can be young, old, male or female - it's the equivalent of calling someone 'dear'.

Although I guess that's not really what the OP was looking for

That's the reason I never cared for the term " pet " in my relationships. My Mom is Brittish and she and my Grandparents and aunts and uncles always called us " pet " or " hen ". It's just me, but it's just doesn't fit for me.

Master is definitely NOT British, but He likes to call me pet. As He is a confirmed pet lover (and pets love Him too - the dog is 100% Daddy's girl and i'm getting worried that my kittens are defecting LOL!), it is natural for Him to use the term for one whom He loves. He tends to call me pet more often than He calls me violet these days. i like it, makes me all warm and glowy too!

As a Domme, I have a tendency to use the word "poppet" rather than pet ... showing My British ancestry I guess!

But in summary ... it's many things to many people!

I was so far removed in terms of intellect from my former master that I might as well have been his pet. Yes, the gap was nearly that wide. But it wasn't a word he preferred, so I was never called it.
