LaserKitty -> How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 5:35:27 AM)

I've tried patches, cold turkey and such.  HELP!!!

Jeffff -> RE: How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 5:45:07 AM)

I used the gum... still do when I really want one.

It works well, but it isn't a cigarette. All it does is take the edge off

laurell3 -> RE: How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 5:47:07 AM)

Many people I know that have quit have said replacing the oral fixation with something else helps alot. I don't know personally, I haven't quit yet. Sadly, my cat is making me and I'm not sure that's a good enough impetus for success.

Two people that I know who quit. Myself and GD. Neither of us used a programme, patches, special gum, anything of that sort. To me, the MOST important ingredient is the determination to quit and knowing that it is going to be miserable but that you will do it regardless.

I determined when my most important moments were and found a way to deal with them. Instead of having that, after work smoke, I got busy doing something else. Instead of having that, after dinner smoke, I got up and did the wash up from dinner or went for a walk. I focused on taking big deep breaths, much like inhaling, when I wanted a smoke badly. Concentrating on the clean air I was drawing into my lungs instead of the nasty shit.

If I needed something more, Werthers Originals or bubble gum got me through.

It wasn't easy but it's been 18ish years for me and nearly 2 for GD.

Im a quiting expert. Sadly I quit 7 times last year. Quiting not so hard. Staying quit is very hard. You have to think of it as a disease that has to be managed. Like being an alchoholic thats falls off the bandwagon, you have to get back on.

When you quit ,drink plenty of water. Fruits like watermelon seem to help me,get some exercise when you quit. Have a craving? Take a walk. Replace bad habits with healthy ones.

Whatever method you use you have to be strong in your resolve. I know for me when I smoke, I end up asthmatic and coughing so that is incentive to stop. So when you make up your mind to do it you have to stick with it. "Trying" to quit does not show resolve. You just have to do it.

I think the one thing I could do to help you quit is to let you meet my dad.

He's 70 years old, and he started smoking at 15 (not unusual in this working-class area of Northern England at the time).

He finally quit his 40 a day habit at age 55, after his third stroke - the one that left him in a wheelchair. This is on top of his lung problems, his heart attacks (2 big ones so far) and the dementia which has started due to degradation of his brain caused by the ministrokes (TIAs) he suffers.

Discussions with his various neurologists, dementia specialists, cardio-thoracic specialists et al. pinpoint smoking as a prime cause or exacerbator of his problems.

He's going to die too soon, as a direct result of smoking. I worry about him every day. I don't know how I'm going to cope when he does die, but I'm SO ANGRY that smoking has led him to this painful, degrading, distressing end. I'm angry that my entire family is going through this dreadful time as a result of smoking.

The effects of smoking will catch up with you in the end, and it will devastate not only YOUR life, but the lives of everyone who loves you.

Think of that when you crave your next nicotine fix .

I do think every one and every instance of quitting is different. I've quit three times and each time was different. What worked the first time didn't work the second or third.

The first time I quit I went cold turkey. I was at work one morning and had a bad cold. The cigarettes tasted like crap. I just decided then and there to quit. I carried a half pack of cigarettes around with me for over a week, telling myself that I was quitting because I wanted to...NOT just because I had run out of cigarettes. I think that is one mistake many people make. The run out of cigarettes and tell themselves that they just will not buy any more, but as soon as a friend offeres them one their "excuse" goes out the window. I didn't smoke again for 13 years. Started again because of divorce and stress.

The second time I quit was with the help of hypnosis. Went to one of those group "stop smoking" siminars. Guaranteed for you to not have cravings, etc. It lasted for 4 months. For most of those 4 months I did not have any cravings, but when they returned it was with a vengence. I couldn't pass a convienence store without the strong desire to turn in and get a pack of smokes, which I eventually did.

The last time I quit was, I think, in 1998 or 99. I used the patch, but had to devise my own program with them. I used a milder patch and cut down on how many cigarettes I smoked and how much of each cigarette I smoked. Then I set a date for having my last one. I and a lady friend that did not smoke were going to Vegas for a few days and I made the day we flew there to be my last day. Spending that much time with someone that didn't smoke helped with the initial physical part of the habit. I still used the patch for a few more days, but soon quit those too.

So I would have to say to take a close look at your own situation and try to find the right tool or combination that works for you. I do think the hypnosis might work for you, but I would not recommend the group siminars. I think one on one sessions with a hypnotist with follow-up sessions for reinforcement would be the best way to go if you should decide to try hypnosis.

One more thing. The thing that use to help me when I went cold turkey was watermelon, but also straws cut into cigarette size. I coud inhale deeply like I was smoking and keep my hands busy. Also plenty of sleep. Its sometimes best to sleep alot through those first 3 days if going cold turkey.

I have found the patch to be most helpful for cravings when relying on aids.

sirsholly -> RE: How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 6:55:16 AM)

Throughout the years i tried it all...mints, patches, gum, hypnosis and cold turkey. I would quit for a while but always go back.

After this head injury i lost my short term memory. The first time i forgot i had a cigarette burning was when i realized i could easily cause a fire that would harm my family. That did it.

I am not suggesting you play smash-face with the basement stairs, but there has to be determination that goes past the thought of "Gee...i really should quit."

You have to want to quit more than you want to smoke.

abrattyprincess -> RE: How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 6:56:41 AM)

I know several people who quit successfully using this type of method. Chew Sticks! They come in tons of different flavors and are good for you!

http://www.houseofnubian.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Shelf/ASP/Hierarchy/04.html

"Chew sticks have also been found as a safe and effective way to help Quit Smoking. Natives of the West Indies like to chew on licorice sticks or on sugar cane stalks. Inspired by this, one doctor recommended that his patients chew licorice sticks to break the smoking habit. The idea has apparently been very successful. Ex-smokers like having something to chew on or hold in their mouths. The licorice stick is a safe substitute for a cigarette."

Also in different flavors -->

There is a prescription medicine called Chantix that many of my friends tried and it really worked well.

Other than that, I can tell you that when I quit in 1993, I was up to 2 packs a day.  I replaced it with the gym.  I would ride the bike or stairmaster for at least 60 minutes every day and I could literally feel the junk and crap leaving my lungs...

Level -> RE: How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 7:25:15 AM)

Plus, I've heard the Chantix will give you wild dreams [8D]

I quit in 1987, I think. Woke up one morning, hacking up nasty green shit, and grabbed the pack of Marlboros and ripped it in half.

When you really and truly get tired of something, that can help a lot.

Yep...carrying a watermelon under each arm will definitely cut down on smoking [:)]

I think watermelon is a great idea...much better than the more unhealthy things such as chips. Plus, as opposed to mints or gum, it keeps the hands busy.

I wasn't able to breathe, that pretty much did it for me.  Didn't need anything after that.  I DID quit for 7 months with the patch.  However, I wasn't born with asthma, I got it from smoking.  What I DO know is that when you quit, you will be AMAZED at the amount of energy you have and, I swear, it's like getting a face lift, that's how much your skin improves!  I wish it were easy, it is SO not.  Even when you're struggling to breathe.  I wish that they would make all the bars non-smoking down here, cause I still feel VERY tempted when I'm having a drink or hell even if I'm just somewhere and people are smoking nearby.  But it's only been a few weeks for me, this time.  I'm hoping to make it last.  I know it will get easier, the longer I go without, though.  And working out helps a great deal.  Actually, a regular exercise routine will also help diminish those cravings, I strongly recommend it!  I know you can do it!  Hang in there!  If you slip, don't beat yourself up and get right back on top of it again.

Also, lollipops help and they're definitely sexy looking!  You might also take up crochet or knitting!

I used to know 2 guys that were on that, neither one of them quit and were on that for a long time and still smoking!

Now, apart from a lil bit as a kid I never smoked...so I am not an expert there but maybe you could start it to reduce it as an alternative?

In 2008 I did improve my food intake which means I cut down chocolate and coca cola to once a week.
And what I never imagined to happen was, that coke didnt even taste to me anymore after a while...at some point I had weeks without any coke at all as I was not attracted to it...due to different circumstances I went back to my habbit but I am currently working on getting back to that regime as it simply means to look more after myself...and heck, what could be more important to me, wasting money on those companies or to improve my health???

I would try to cut it down to maybe 3 days a week (in case you smoke every day) and then after 2 weeks or so cut it down to 2 or 1 day...and then at some point quit it....then maybe you will realise as well that you will be less attracted to it.

Good luck with whatever you do [:)]

DesFIP -> RE: How to quit smoking. (7/4/2010 8:13:00 AM)

For some people, nicotine is more addictive than heroin.
That's a sobering fact. But 20% of smokers find this is true.
Zyban can help if you don't get bad side effects.

Good luck.
