The question seems to be, should he step down or not?

His latest remarks over the war in Afghanistan according to Fox News, which is surprising in itself...

quote:

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was scrambling to contain the fallout over the holiday weekend from his remarks claiming Afghanistan is a "war of Obama's choosing," which the United States never really "wanted to engage in."

Seems to be drawing considerable fire from within the GOP. Calls for his resignation, even one member of congress pondering a challenge to Steele for his position.

I dont much about this man other than what i read... but he seems to be coming across as a liability for the GOP.

The article also includes a few other tidbits...

quote:

But some prominent Republicans expressed tentative hope that Steele could recover from the stumble. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who called Steele's comments "uninformed" and "unwise," noted that he was trying to make things right.

"The good news is Michael Steele is backtracking so fast he's going to be in Kabul fighting here pretty soon," he said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "It's up to him to see if he can lead the Republican Party after this comment. ... I hope he can get it behind him. We will see if he can get it behind him."

Is backtracking seen, now, as good politics? I would believe someone who had to back track that hard and fast would be a huge liability. But i could be wrong.

quote:

DeMint and other GOP officials sought to correct Steele's assertion that the war belongs to Obama.

"This is America's war. It's not Obama's war," DeMint said.

quote:

Steele's comments were captured on camera last Thursday at a fundraiser in Connecticut.

"Keep in mind again, federal candidates, this was a war of Obama's choosing. This is not something the United States had actively prosecuted or wanted to engage in," Steele said. "If he's such a student of history, has he not understood that you know that's the one thing you don't do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? All right, because everyone who has tried, over a thousand years of history, has failed. And there are reasons for that."

Steele's comments above does seem to have one benefit for the GOP party. Expressed better by Lieberman...

quote:

Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., said Steele's comments, on the plus side, did serve to clear up any confusion about where Republicans stood.

"I think we had a kind of very positive boomerang effect here," he said on "Fox News Sunday." "There was such a strong reaction from Republican leaders to Michael Steele's comments. ... I think the Republican Party gives me encouragement to believe that they're going to take the high road and not make a partisan political fight out of the war in Afghanistan or try to take advantage politically of a war that will get tough and will test our steadfastness."

The very fact that he is even known is surprising.  The DNC and RNC heads are usually almost anonymous.

Steele's had a surprisingly long run, considering the numerous gaffes, lavish overspending, and scandals with the strip club.  The fact that he has fellow Republicans calling for his head isn't good.  I doubt he'll last two weeks.

It`s a sticky wicket for republicans.

On one hand,he is a terrible liability. The scandals and missteps say "I`m in way over my head and don`t know WTF I`m doing!!".

On the other, this is the worst of all possible timing to replace Steele.

The election is 5 short months away and the election season is in full tilt.

Replacing Steele would be a huge setback and distraction. Not just in terms of elections, but in terms of message and confidence.

Personally,I`d love him to stay.As well as the jerk who apologized to BP.We can say to voters, these are the folks who`ll be leading us and making policy if the GOP gains control of congress.

But I`ll take him getting thrown under da` bus too.

When the TX GOP put getting rid of strip clubs in their platform I was wondering where the National Republicans were going to be able to hold meetings.  They all can't fit in an airport bathroom.

I think that Julia just made a racist post. Because he is black the GOP can make inroads into the hip hop culture. Don't worry about Michael Steele. the dems have way more other problems.

I would think the GOP needs to tend to Steele at this point. His views are diverging from the parties, according to the comments after Steele's own.

I was actually hoping to here from more of the GOP backers on these boards. No attempt to flame, i would really just like opinions on his ability to be an effective leader at this point. Since so many have no problem calling supporters of Obama any kind of name, im curious if the Republican side wont face their own demons and take a stab at this thread.

The hip-hop references come straight from Steele:

"There was underlying concerns we had become too regionalized and the party needed to reach beyond our comfort" zones, he said, citing defeats in such states as Virginia and North Carolina. "We need messengers to really capture that region - young, Hispanic, black, a cross section ... We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings."

They don’t want to talk about it, a hot potato I guess.

How’s this?

Amazing how the radical left is trying to get him replaced. What is this? A red herring story to get people looking elsewhere than at the embarrassment we have as president?

ROTFLMAO

or

Kristol calls for RNC chairman Steele to resign

Kristol says in an open letter to Steele. “It’s an affront, both to the honor of the Republican party and to the commitment of the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they’ve been asked to take on by our elected leaders.”

McCain: Steele must assess his future as GOP head

WASHINGTON – The embattled head of the GOP isn't getting an endorsement from Sen. John McCain.

McCain says party chairman Michael Steele's recent comments about the Afghanistan war are "wildly inaccurate" and inexcusable.

Im not sure i can agree with you, Brain.

No one made Steele make those comments. And its the GOP who is actually making a huge issue of all this. If it were the Democrats who were making the stink, then i could see it as a red herring.

I`ll handle this one Julia.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40beCFVXSj0&feature=related

Go to 215 or start from the beginning.

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40beCFVXSj0&feature=related

Go to 440 for the hip-hop

That was easy.It was Steele`s own words Julia was quoting, professor.Guess you win the clueless award this week.Congrats.

This is also the interview where Steele disses Rush and later crawls to Rush for forgivness, proving who runs the GOP.

Depends on what you call "problems".  Come 2012, the Dems have a clear identity and their platform will be Obama's.  The GOP is splintering into moderates and Tea Party, and Steele, who is supposed to be holding the party together, is instead a sideshow.

The Dems have major image issues, but the GOP doesn't even have a coherent image. They were getting successful painting the Dems as the party of socialism and rampant spending but due to Bush cannot shake his legacy of unpopular wars and TARP.  Barton's whining about how poor BP got treated was an epic blunderstroke that allows the Dems to paint the GOP as the party of big business, and almost entirely takes away the GOP opportunity of capitalizing on the spill response.
