In pronouncing Xue Feng guilty of spying and collecting state secrets, the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said his actions "endangered our country's national security."

Its verdict said Xue received documents on geological conditions of onshore oil wells and a data base that gave the coordinates of more than 30,000 oil and gas wells belonging to China National Petroleum Corporation and listed subsidiary PetroChina Ltd. That information, it said, was sold to IHS Energy, the U.S. consultancy Xue worked for and now known as IHS Inc.

The sentence of eight years is close to the recommended legal limit of 10 for all but extremely serious violations. Though Xue, now 45 and known as a meticulous, driven researcher, showed no emotion when the court announced the verdict, it stunned his lawyer and his sister, his only family member allowed in the courtroom.

An Israeli in NYC called a radio talk show to say that there was going to be a big outbreak of swine flu or something in the Ukraine, a day or two before it actually happened. The SWAT team was dispatched, and this is in the US where they are suopposed to be immune fron getting fucked with by the government. It's in a treaty somewhere I think. So what the fuck did this guy think he was doing ?

And WTF do we care where their oils wells are, so we can bomb them ? Fat chance. In fact, China, produce all the oil you can and reduce demand. Then prices can go down for the rest of us. Then we might be able to afford another Xi-Chuang plasma TV with the name RCA on the front.

He did not compromise their national security, he was locked up for being fucking stoooooopid.

Those geologists have been torturing us for years with their fossils and their damn OU.

Why can't they just call a mountain a mountain like the rest of us and who the hell is Devonian?

Dude, where did you see this? Do you think there are government agencies listening to every talk show in the country, logging all the phone calls coming in?

Hell, if that were true there'd be no one left to call in on AM overnight radio

Nope, they were already after him at the time, and he knew they were closing in. He wanted to get the word out, which I consider commendable really, exposing corruption.

Disregard it if you wish. It is not easily sourcable. But realize this, in no way would I imply that the government is listening to every radio call in talk show. But if people heard it, that's probably where it came from. Actually there a few interesting discoveries afterward, but once out of the public eye people had much bigger things with which to concern themselves, like who gets Lebron.

When all we had was AM and FM, I would say there is a possibility that the government could come close to total supervision, but now with XM radio and 300 channels and all that, it is obviously impractical.

Fact is I read it somewhere, I figured it quite plausible when they used the phrase "was heard by thousands of listeners". Take it in that context. If I can get the guy's name I'll let you know, it was one of those wierd foreign names.

But just for fun, back to the topic. Why was a geologist looking for nuclear plants in a foreign country ? Or was that a cover ? Now I have no problems with the US spying on China a bit, after all they have spied on us. The guy got busted.
