Inky, maybe you need to go back to the psychiatrist and redo the meds. Because whatever you're on isn't working. The mania is really bad and the short term memory disturbance is also unpleasant. There are other meds that could work. Or combinations of them.

My daughter cycles every five minutes without the meds, and she just got a letter from college saying she made Dean's List. You don't need to be suffering this way.

Oh and reading time doesn't mean you all read the same book. They do homework while you cook dinner. Then afterward everyone cleans up for 20 minutes. Then everybody gathers in the living room and reads for half an hour. You read separate books but sitting together.

Inky,

Perhaps trying to find shorter books... and get a notepad to take notes as you go to help you remember the next time you pick it up.

Also, I don't know how old your son is but yes, the ritual of going to the library and picking out books with him and reading to and with him can help him get hooked on books. He can help you remember what the 2 of you read.

Oooh the notepad is an idea.

My son is 12 but he is autistic so reading is a chore for him but something I want him to practice and perhaps enjoy on some level.

When I was in school I didn't have much time for leisure reading. It would be a month before I got back to a book I was reading and I love reading. I used those long post it notes to put a note in with a short cliff note of where I was at and what was happening, so I didn't have to go back....no idea if that would help you though, it's an idea.

I honestly have to scim or even skip some of the longer posts or threads on here. I just can't do it most days. Its frustrating. Lol

Errrrr, I am a skimmer. I race through threads skipping most people because it doesnt hold my attention but I actually think that is a healthy thing.

If a longer post is actually interesting I can get through it but most of the time all I hear is blah blah blah.

How about funny books? Funny books might be easier to read?

The manias are really bad because of all the triggers I am dealing with on a daily basis due to my currently living situation. We have honestly doubled my meds since this all began and right now changing them totally would do more harm than good. (we have discussed it in detail a few times) Meds only do so much to control the chemical imbalance, and sadly stress still can not always be avoided.

And how you describe reading time is exactly how we do it currently.

I love to read, but due to my medication and manias I can no longer focus to read for any real amount of time. I have tried to read for awhile then go back later and continue but I found myself forgetting what I had read. So I would have to go back pages to recall it. Reading is important to my daughter and it is something I want my son to learn to enjoy. I think by me reading he can do this. However, how do I get passed not being able to? It's frustrating. Any ideas or suggestions?

Your son seeing that you enjoy reading won't inspire him to enjoy it. Reading to or with him will. Because of his autism, only you know at what level he can function or learn to focus on words on a page.

As for you, I'm sorry you can no longer enjoy an activity that previous brought you pleasure. Certainly try all the suggestions here, but the sad thing is that sometimes after an injury, we have to give up things that we used to enjoy. Believe me I know how difficult it can be. There are a lot of things I can no longer enjoy, and even things I didn't enjoy (doing dishes) are difficult to do.

Reading for shorter times and making little notes about what is going on should help. Learning to adjust and accept this new change in your life will be a bit more difficult.
Inky...what about a book of family-oriented short stories? Even something along the line of Fairy Tales?
You can read to the kids, and that forces you to concentrate more than if you were reading by yourself.

I might try that, I have a book of native american folk lore they both might enjoy. The stories are fairly short for the most part. I have to remember to take baby steps and not beat myself up because I can't do it all, everything has a trade off.

Inky...i have to tell you i was in the same boat a few yrs ago. I am such an avid reader that i never turn on the TV. Because of a huge stress level my ADHD went nuts. I had never needed to medicate for it in the past, but i was getting manic. There was no way i could even sit still long enough to open a book.

My advice...if you can't read a book yourself...stop trying. The only thing you are doing is getting frustrated by your lack of concentration, and that is not helping your stress level. Relax in the evenings by reading with the kids. See what happens when you read that way only. My guess is your anxiety level climbs when you pick up a book now, so that is another strike against you.
You have a full plate right now and a high stress level. This will not last forever.
Once things calm down and your move is over, try to read again.

So you're right when I can't my anxiety level goes up and which only adds to my current situation. Truthfully even thinking about it makes my anxiety level go up. Sounds silly but I am my own worst critic and I hold myself to unrealitic standards sometimes (I'm told). Truthfully, I look around at other women my age and I want to be able to do the stupid lil things they do like reading a damn book. It sounds crazy I'm sure.

ETA: My doctor is always telling me that with with the things I have currently going on anyone without my disorders would have anxiety issue and conscentration issues. She says I need to cut myself a break and look at everything I can / do manage to considering everything. I have trouble doing that.

Inky...you are way too hard on yourself.

You mentioned how fast you are cycling and how out of control your emotions are. Now think about this...are you really surprised your level of concentration is compromised?

and i can't read the font, damnit!

Ruth Marcus had an interesting column in the Washington Post about how our surfing/skimming culture is eroding everyone's concentration.

Feel free to just ignore him.

I realize that I didn't ask something before.....You said that when you go back to read again, you have to go back a few pages to remember what was going on. As you are re-reading those pages, do you start to remember or is it like reading it fresh again? Because if it is like you didn't read it before, it could be a different problem that they are just assuming is the meds, the stress and the mania.

I love to read, but have gone through many periods where the stress and frustrations of life are just so high I can't focus on a book long enough to read a page, let alone a chapter. During those times, I just don't read, I will find something else to do.

Cutting yourself some slack isn't always the easiest thing in the world to do, but it is really an important characteristic to learn. I know that when I was working in family law, I had to learn to not work past a certain hour or my mind would be too revved up to sleep. I had to keep reminding myself (and sometimes clients, lol) that after 7 or 8 o'clock, work was off limits. So you need to remind yourself to cut yourself some slack and relax.

As for reading to your son, see if reading aloud to him causes you to remember better what you read. Reading aloud uses another part of the brain, so it could help you remember better. If it does, then you can go off by yourself to read and read aloud to yourself.

Hello D -
When I was teaching children in Russia how to speak / read in English, I used a lot of wonderful websites online.  There are gobs of stories that are read by the authors or actors.  They are specifically for children.  Also, you can find short stories (2-3 paragraphs) online as well.  If you would like some links, I'd be happy to provide them.  Just send me a note on the other side, and I'll give it to you.

best,
sunshine

Also, you might want to look into graphic novels.
