Meanwhile the latest guess for the cost of the pope's visit to Brum this summer is running at £12million - or one third of the cost of the queen for a year.

Get your purses out everyone, thats another 20p for the pope if you will

E

See, this sucks.
I don't mind my 62p, but paying for the Pope?  I wonder if the Vatican would pay for me to take a holiday there...

DCWoody -> RE: Taxpayer Tribute to Queen Announced (7/6/2010 5:56:55 AM)

The thing with expensive visits like that......the Pope isn't charging anything to come over here, he ain't gonna present a bill, it's the govt thinks (almost certainly correctly) it's a good idea to provide a lot of protection, pomp and circumstance....put on a good show with the catholic world watching. I hear the catholic church has given a few mil towards expenses, and it's all going in the UK, so it doesn't really bother me....makes good sense to make adequate showing when sufficiently influential people visit, just a part of the cost of govt.

RCdc -> RE: Taxpayer Tribute to Queen Announced (7/6/2010 6:07:37 AM)

If the income was more than the outgoings, and it goes back into the UK, then sure.  But I am not comfortable paying for any pomp, circumstance or protection on a religious leader that advocates the subjects that he does.

"Isn't the Queen one of the wealthiest people alive? Why should the british taxpayers subsidize a family of german parasites? ;) "

You MF, just when I thought I had a competent enemy here you go and say something with which I agree about 155%.

Can someone please tell me the pound/dollar conversion?  I never know how much money yall are talking about when you get to discussing it.

and yes, I am too lazy to google it.

RCdc -> RE: Taxpayer Tribute to Queen Announced (7/6/2010 6:20:19 AM)

I can understand your point, but often it's sensible to treat bastards nicely. Can't do NI situation any harm to have the catholic end boss going round being nice to all the protestants, for example.

I still don't have to be happy that any economy may be improved with blood money though.
Yeah and I know that sounds ultra dramatic.

FR

Why doesn't the Pope just stay home and keep poping ? He's losing. We got more freaks now than normal people, and we don't even rape little boys. Catholic churches are going out of business here all day long. Their archaic ideas belong in their city of gold, Rome.

Lock on those golden spectacles (ala Wizard Of Oz). If I were head of state I would tell him to just stay home, we don't need the trouble. We don't need a show of his opulence to people who are struggling to survive, broke and half broken. He's another fucking welfare recipient just like the Queen. We celebrate these people ? No wonder the world is in so much fucking trouble. I'd rather celebrate a sixteen kid having bitch on welfare, she is alot cheaper. How much is a pound of crack cost divided among 300,000,000 people ?

You don't have the full Terminator picture yet though. Celebration is a dirty word to me, therefore celebrities are .........

That means your favorite actor or music artist, all of them. None of them do any real work, for the most part. And when they do they should be paid forty or fifty grand a year like the rest of us. What the fuck are they doing that is so special ?

You want it in one fucking word ------

Lying.

None of these motherfuckers are welcome in my company. Not in my house, my car or my bar. My only working TV set is in the basement, not hooked up to anything. Almost all of the content is sickening to me. I want no part of it. And I'll let it go at that. Eventually you will all see what kind of game is being run on you, but you'll never listen to me so I will not waste my time.

Here is an interesting article on just how much the royal family is "leading by example" in making budget cuts during these hard economic times.

A dollar was 67 pence, the last time I checked.

mnottertail -> RE: Taxpayer Tribute to Queen Announced (7/6/2010 7:55:45 AM)

yeah, thats typical american, we usually call other money funny money cause it used to be so cheap to buy.........like 3 marks a dollar, so they were like quarters, when I was in the UK it was like 2.5 pound a dollar.........hard to deal with, I bought a dinner at a hostlery cost 30 pound.  Wised up to that shit quick.

pahunkboy -> RE: Taxpayer Tribute to Queen Announced (7/6/2010 8:09:36 AM)

Why not send her on vacation to the US?

show her real good what a budget cut feels like.

The cash doesn't exactly go into her pocket & get blown on coke, it mostly goes on maintaining all the old buildings and employing the fancy dress lot....nationalised tourism essentially.

As for being the richest around......iffy.

In theory she's worth tens of billions, but almost all of it isn't really hers, & actually national property 'held in trust' (think she could sell buckingham palace?). Trying to work out what belongs to her, ignoring the things which come with the monarchy (crown), she's probably not quite a billionaire. Still stinking of course, but not in the top 1000 richest people.

Notice the wink? I was kidding.

I'm sure that the few million GBP spent by the British government to maintain the Saxe-Coburgs is more than made up for in taxes generated from foreign tourists.

And actually I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that she is directly worth around 500 million with the only major land she directly owns being Balmoral (26000 hectares according to wiki).

DCWoody -> RE: Taxpayer Tribute to Queen Announced (7/6/2010 9:47:02 AM)

I could tell the 'german parasites' part was in jest, but not sure about the rest, and is a common perception all round I figured I'd respond to. :)
