BossyShoeBitch -> Piano question... (7/6/2010 7:07:54 AM)

I have a Baldwin Acrosonic upright piano that I am trying to appraise.  Trouble is, I don't know how to go about it, so I am hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction.

I would appreciate any suggestions! Thanks.

question is, for what purpose?  for sale, for insurance, or to feel good?

I would prolly pay to have it tuned, and get a tuner that can also appraise it, because here is the issue:

Call the local music store.

If they can`t do it for you, they should know a professional who does.

The best way I've ever found to truly appraise something is to try to buy one just like it.

The problem with pianos though is that they are like boats. People get tired of them and literally give them away, which screws up the market value. With a truck and a few real healthy dudes I could probably get about four of them by Friday for free.

Therefore it is best to look for anything special about your piano which would make it desirable, above and beyond the freebie options.

If it ain't got nothing going for it in that respect and it works, learn to play it.

It will depend on what type of upright it is. There are three main types, spinet, studio and the third I can't remember. The primary difference is the size of it. Spinet being the smallest and studio the largest. Height and width are the main dimensions. Overall condition is major factor (finish, functionality), how long since it has been tuned, etc, etc....

The general range depending on the factors above should be $1500 - $4000. One plus in your favor already is the brand name. Good luck selling it. Along with my sister, we have been trying to sell my late mother's piano for the past 4 yrs. Though we gave up actively pushing it 2 yrs ago.

open the lid and/or the face board above the keys. there will be a raised serial number on the cast iron frame. that number tells where and when the piano was made.

I'm going to cross my fingers that the market might be a little kinder in Florida...

It was manufactured in 1961.

Unfortunately it is probably not going to bring as much price wise as you might hope.

Just a thought, if it is not a matter of selling it so you can use the proceeds on something else, it might be better to donate it.  If you can get a good appraisal you might get more as a tax write off donating it to a school choral group or something like a church youth group, than you can trying to find a buyer.

I found the list of serial numbers by year, thanks.

I probably will have to donate it and take the deduction.

Thanks you guys!
