Re: Vanilla: If its used as a putdown, then I can see why that would be offensive. But often its just used as a descriptor. An adjective. Its meant to convey additional information. Do you think people are really using it as a putdown much or most of the time, or could it be that that's just the feeling you're getting, somehow?

As a guy who's made much of being fairly vanilla on these boards (a practice I now have to put to an end after the party at MercnBeth's) I seldom felt that someone was using the term "vanilla" as a put-down and I certainly didn't use it that way. For the most part, it seems to be a fairly straight-forward description... a way to say "not kinky". In theory, I would've been one of the few posters on these boards who would be offended by the word and I was not.

But in BDSM circles, I use the word "vanilla" to describe sex without sadism/masochism/bondage.

I dunno Jeff.  Even when in the missionary position, I find Master pretty much has me in a state of bondage.[;)]

Nods...yes, me too. It is never plain vanilla. And I would not have it any other way. :)

Personally, I include oral sex in nilla, but not anal sex (that isn't to say I think anal is way out there kinky, but personally I think it has just enough taboo about it to still be a little "outre".

Hello ML,
I think your point about anal sex is fair for certain cultures.  However, there are places where it is presumed and in fact more common than "missionary style".  While living in South America, for instance, I may have had an opportunity or two to engage in a bit of hanky spanky with the fellows.  (Only one or two, mind you).  There anal sex was a given.  I think it probably had to do with birth control, Catholicism, and poverty, but it just was the way of things.  Also... have you ever seen any art by the Moche (ca. 100-800 AD)?  It's pretty hot... and chock full of anal sex...

Either I have never had vanilla sex, or I have had nothing but. Not sure yet.

When I think of "vanilla sex", I think of Gonzo porn.  "Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am" style.  Anything beyond that, I consider a different style of sex, just depends on what category it falls under.
