Brain, why do they have a shortage of M.D.s in Canada? Are they comming down to the U.S. to make more money than they can in Canada?

Mostly yes, but another part of the problem is the sparseness of the population in most of the country, in most of the country there really isn't enough people to make a worthwhile practice so no MDs bother going there...its been a problem all along in Canada, both the sparse population and the lure of big money in the US, so neither is really symptomatic of the healthcare system, but rather just another example of the "brain drain" we have in all the professions...not enough of a market at home and the huge market available in the US...it sucks our doctors, engineers, programmers, and all other highly skilled professionals (except lawyers, you guys are kind enough to leave us our lawyers....thanks for nothing!!)

In fact, popeye, the flow goes the other way. More doctors come to Canada from the US than go there from Canada.

I'm using it and it is doing very well thank you. I see doctors frequently and they are taking care of my multiple sclerosis treatment. I think it would be wonderful if Americans could enjoy the same quality health care Canadians are lucky to have thanks to Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The best prime minister Canada was lucky to have. My problem with this is patient confidentality. Not sure if its the norm in canada.

That was my first thought too. It looks like a giant HIPPA violation. I would think people could waive their rights though. We were discussing this last night (from a profit perspective) this would be great for American providers to be able to do. We would make so much more money billing this way and work less hours(similar to if we followed a more "Mayo" like model"). I know they are couching it in how "good for the patients this is" but make no mistake this is about increased profits/decreased workload/time or they wouldn't be doing it. You know how us women are, we pretty much get into a group of women with similar problems, and we yap. Men, not so much. I can see the benefit of such a program, i can also see the drawbacks. For example, those with high blood pressure. A group meeting may work... but some one on one time is still needed. Then we have to think about those with more social problems, such as herpes. No one wants to discuss that with their own Dr, let alone a group of strangers. And, regardless of all that, will the "rich" be held to the same group standard as the rest? Or does it go back to a have or have-not society again. The potential of benefits are great, but so is the potential for abuse.

This is true for Australia too - people are given incentives to work as a doctor or a teacher in a lot of the rural outback areas.

In many cases, no they wouldn't be but that is because they are seeing providers that cater to the wealthy to begin with. Boutique medicine is a booming business. Obviously it won't work for everyone but if it was the only way you could see a provider vs getting no care at all, many people would welcome it. Which is the case in many poor urban and rural communities now. That is not because they lack insurance but because there are just no providers willing to work in those areas for those low medicare/medicaid rates.
