Peak oil will be the end of the fixation on cheap Chinese goods. Once oil prices go up enough, it will no longer be profitable to ship Chinese goods here rather than manufacturing them at home.

Companies brace for end of cheap made-in-China era

Factory workers demanding better wages and working conditions are hastening the eventual end of an era of cheap costs.

FILE - In this file photo taken May 25, 2010, a dozen labor activists throw paper money in front of paper figures representing Chinese employees of Foxconn Technology Group, who recently died in China, outside the Foxconn office in Hong Kong. Factory workers demanding better wages and working conditions are hastening the eventual end of an era of cheap costs that helped make southern coastal China the world's factory floor. Step two.

It happened to Japan remember ? Before asshole Nixon opened China up, we only had the Nips to deal with. (that means Nipponese, not derogatory).

It may be time for a move, for another country to supply our needs. (now reread that last sentence).

China poisoned our children with their lead tainted toys, and really fucked up on some of the pedal assemblies in our cars. Sure they care about us. But then we owe them and can't pay.

The yuan was pegged to the dollar and if that hasen't ended, look for it soon.

Now, given the most basic of facts, if you were them, what would you do ?  By shunning our interests, they hurt their own, but they can survive in a world market, We cannot. It is simple to see what is going to happen. They will divest themselves of investments in our national debt, and our currency will drop. And if the story about the gold is true it will be even worse. But that is only if they are not in cahoots with each other. If they are, things will be different. I'll see later, as time unfolds.

Chinese workers are demanding more money from their employers. This spells big trouble for a country that cannot afford to have an unemployment problem.

I do not see the labor cost in China as a major problem. The current situation is temporary. In my impression the major problem is financial. The crash is built into the World financial system. The imploding US can not run big trade deficits in near future. It inevitably will lead to a decease in production in China, unemployment, even lower wages and human suffering. I doubt the expanding trade in Asia and Africa and developing internal market in China fully compensates. Things happen too fast. The fast increase in wages we see today may not be because of workers protests (China is a totalitarian state) but strategic (behind the scenes affected) move to increase domestic consumption.

Once the Chinese start manufacturing for the Chinese market, they'll have the factories humming all the time.  First, gotta lift the population out of poverty...

Aren't they doing that already? They're just doing the other for export at the same time.

Okay, I phrased that wrong.  They ARE supplying the local market, but the market is still way smaller than it should be, due to the large percentage of Chinese who live in poverty.
