~Fast Reply~

I'm kinda torn on this one. My first reaction is go "No, it's not racist - that's absurd. It's just tanning beds and anyone of a lighter skin could use them". But then if we flipped it and were taxing hair-braiding or relaxing treatments, I'd be pretty inclined to call that racist.

So... maybe. I think I need more information on the specifics of the tax and what the justification for the tax is along with anything else being taxed under the new rule.

I know there is a grab for money.  So I could go either way on this one.

It's a tax on something that is inherently bad for you. Maybe it is racist. Maybe they are preferentially reducing the skin cancer risk of the light skinned people who use tanning beds.

In moderation sunlight/tans are not bad for a person.

Actually a person could use health to tax treatments to relax hair. There is a movement to get rid of all chemicals in hair salons on the basis that it's very bad for the person receiving the treatments.

Would that be ok, if there was a tax targeting a service primarily used by African-Americans if it was for health reasons?

Just throwing that out there. I tend to think that movement is silly myself.

One winter-  I really enjoyed the tan booth.   I dont really go any more.

But that year- it perked me up- it was well needed.    So for some at various times in their life it can be therapeutic.

As a matter of routine- I dont use them.  But I am glad they exist.   My rational was the cold winter- it gave me the heat up I needed.    Tho a sauna might have done the same thing.

Racist? No.

Stupid? ALSO NO.

Sure anyone can use it but like Mexicans, African American, Native Americans, ANYONE from Spain, are really ever gunna is silly.

This is not a Tax on COLOR, it is a Tax on abusing your Health now that the Goverment is paying for it.

Is it racist to Tax Cigerettes? No, but it is an UNHEALTHY thing to do and now that the Goverment is helping to pick up the tab abything bad for you will start to get taxed.

Seriously guys, enjoy your Fat Heavy foods now... they will be more expensive soon.

I don't think its necessarily racists but  i do think its a biased concept.   It does amaze me people want the government this involved in their lives and okay a tax on something all because they want to cry health concepts -- what's next?    The actual sun is also deemed a culpret, what's next are they going to tex people to make sure they are wearing sunblock or fine them in the name of health?

The only people this will effect are people who utilize the tanning booths as a luxury, those who use it as part of their routine will simply be taking the new tax amount away from the local economy and instead giving it to the government.    I pay 50ish bucks for a month for tanning when i tan, it means it will go up to $55.00.  That will be $5 bucks going to the government instead of back into the local economy as i would have spent that $5 bucks on something else.

So no, i don't think its racist but i do think its biased and taking money away from the local economy.

Nope it's a tax to offset the tax dollars consumed by people who use the health care system to treat their melanoma. It's a sin tax, like alcohol and cigarettes. And blacks go tanning too. Not the salons as much, but they lie out in the sun. However you can't tax people for lying on a towel in the backyard.

Bullshit yourself.

Tanning Boths are Direct UV rays on the skin in ways and closer than you get otherwise.

If you use the Both... You are TAXED for using it.....

Just like If I Smoke I get TAXED for smokeing them....

How is this any different?

I would be more upset if I got taxed so you could use the bed. I am happy that the only people paying for it are those who choose to use it... JUST LIKE CIGERETTES.

Agree that it's a tax on stupid: tanning beds cause lethal cancers, so do alcohol and cigarettes. Start your clock on Snooki's cancer watch!
A tax can help claw back a fraction of the cost of treating melanoma, and make it less attractive to the young and lower-middle class before they're educated enough to realise cosmetic tanning beds are a serious risk. In the meantime, a poster of a naked Donna Versace should be on every tanning bed lid; a neck like a leather vacuum hose.

Racist? No.

Tanning beds are dangerous. Just ask me. I've had squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma a total of four times.

Sun in moderation is ok.

If they're going to tax people that use the beds I don't see it as a problem.

Taxes that are based on personal use, rather than everyone paying for it, is a user tax.  When I smoke, I am the only one paying the tax on the pack I bought.  Just like the restaurant tax that we have here, if you make your own meals at home, you don't have to pay the tax included in eating out.  I don't have problem with the tax at all.  It's also not racist, IMO.

I've watched in amazed fascination as these so-called "tea partiers" try time and again to project their own deep and quite obvious racism onto the president.  It's psych 101 in full color if you ask me.  This is just the latest example of this.

To answer the question, no, it's a tax on an activity that directly results in greater use of the health care system, just like smoking.  It's a small, but pretty thoughtful, policy component toward getting skyrocketing health care costs back under control.
