if so- do you keep them on hand regularly-?  How much per pound do you pay? and is it taxable?

Do you have any storage tips?

I usually have a couple around. I don't buy too many at once because I don't like them to get beyond the greenish yellow and sickening sweet. If they do, I toss them in the fridge to make banana bread or something with. None of our food is taxable and I honestly have no idea what the price is. As for storage....my kitchen counter.

I buy them occasionally, especially when my grandchildren are going to be here.

If they seem to be getting too ripe, I slice them and freeze the slices. Then they can be dipped into dark chocolate sauce.

Frozen banana with thick dark chocolate, cold and sweet and chocolaty!

I will eat bananas as long as they are green or light yellow, but I really don't like them. But they are good for you, so we have them around so Dad will eat them. The local store has them on special every Tuesday for 19 cents a pound, and they live on the kitchen counter.

pahunkboy -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 11:58:03 AM)

I paid .39 today-  the retail grocer is .59.

I like to keep them on hand.  Tho I am single- it is a wholesome food - bang for the food dollar.

Food as a rule is not taxed in PA.

Sometimes I can get an extra 12 hours of freshness by sticking it in the fridge at the last minute.

DesFIP -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 12:06:04 PM)

I hang them off the handle of the big standing mixer. They last longer than lying down. Bananas are fully ripe when yellow with small brown flecks. If they get a custardy color, they were kept at too low a temperature and will never ripen properly. If you find this happening regularly go have words with your produce manager. This is especially common in winter when the truck unloads and they let them sit on a loading dock in freezing cold weather.

Refrigeration or freezing turns the skins black but doesn't affect the taste.

Overripe ones should be put in the freezer in their skins, save till you have two or three for banana bread.

I love bananas & since they're high in protein I always try & keep them available.

**Eta the price is about .36**

Aylee -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 1:07:39 PM)

No, I do not care for bananas.  Unless they have been made into a sweet bread that contains no nuts.

Price depends.  I can buy the regular ones for $.19 per pound on Thursdays at my local grocery store.  Sometimes I buy the "miniature" ones though and they are more expensive.

I do buy them occasionally as the other half likes them.  I do try to rotate the variety of fruit that I buy and have in the house.  I think right now it is blackberries, blueberries, and apples.  The strawberries went into a Jell-O salad.   [:)]

ShaharThorne -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 1:14:25 PM)

.39 cents here and they get eaten up fast because I take  water pills to get the swelling down.

We do have some bananas in the freezer.  If I ask Mom to make some bread...

I like that idea.   hmm.

I like bananas and buy them but tend to forget to eat them until it is too late [&:] dunno price [&o]

playfulotter -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 3:57:45 PM)

I love them but don't like them too ripe so I buy they with some green still on them and put them in the refrigerator as soon as there is just the littlest bit of green still near the stem end..Their shelf-life can be extended quite a while by doing this. The skin turns brown as someone else said but inside they are still good up to a point of course..I would say a week or so.

mastertizzi -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 6:17:50 PM)

mmm bananas

i usually buy alot, but then i end up forgetting to eat them in time, and then they get the banana cancer

MasterG2kTR -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 6:18:34 PM)

Bananas are one of the ideal fruits to have. Good for the body on many levels. They provide protein, potassium and more. Contrary to some comments above, bananas should never be refrigerated (if you're old enough you will remember the chiquita commercials). If you want bananas to ripen slower, separate them all to indiviuals. Bananas that are a full green will take 5-7 days to ripen. When I buy them I will select 2-3 that are partial green so they are ready to eat in 2-4 days and I will buy some that are much greener to be ready after the others are consumed.

My local prices range from $0.28 to $0.59 depending on time of year. Typically I only have them during the winter months as there are so many fruits that are only practical (price wise) during summer months.

Toppingfrmbottom -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 6:20:25 PM)

No, I don't like them, unless they're dried fruit banna's and then yes I like them.

The reason I don't like their original form, is that they're just to mushy a texture, and it leaves a bad after taste in my mouth.

blueicing -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 6:28:06 PM)

I love bananas! I always have them on hand. I buy them two bunches at a time - one that is kinda green, and one that's kinda ripe. I eat the ripe bananas until they get too ripe, and then I cut them up into little pieces and freeze them for my protein shakes in the morning. By the time the ripe bunch of bananas has been half eaten and then frozen, the second bunch that was green originally is ripe so I repeat the above. Then I go buy more. I eat them with almond butter, or in protein shakes mostly. I never pay attention to how much they are per pound. I should look at that sometime.

dreamerdreaming -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 7:05:17 PM)

Love 'em! They're about 47-49 cents a pound at Wally World right now. I always keep them on hand, because they're one of the best sources of potassium there is.

Fruit: nature's candy! [:)]

I've never met anyone that I know of, who didn't like bananas. So I find the question a little strange. Like asking who doesn't like watermelon. I only ever remember meeting one person in my entire life, who didn't like watermelon. [8|]

As an athlete, I know that its very important to be proactive about my nutrition. And I know that potassium is like protein, in the sense that you can't get enough of it into a tiny pill. The potassium vitamins I've seen have no more than three or four percent of an adult's daily requirement, in them. And without enough potassium, a person can end up in the hospital in seriously bad shape, in a surprisingly short time. So one important way that I stay on top of my nutritional needs is by eating bananas regularly. YUM!!! [:)]

The original Chiquita Banana Song had words geared to educate the public about how to treat them, use them, and how to best store them, at a time when their import was first becoming commonplace in the United States of America (FYI: I'm telling you this just how my family explained it to me-we're American) and people weren't quite sure about their use and care yet. These are the words as Carmen Miranda used to sing them:

I'm Chiquita banana and I've come to say
Bananas have to ripen in a certain way
When they are fleck'd with brown and have a golden hue Bananas taste the best and are best for you
You can put them in a salad
You can put them in a pie-aye
Any way you want to eat them
It's impossible to beat them
But, bananas like the climate of the very, very tropical equator
So you should never put bananas in the refrigerator

soul2share -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 9:32:51 PM)

I only eat them when they are green.....not too sweet, very firm.  Once they get to the stage where most people eat them, I let them go black for bread.  And I do keep mine in the fridge...I keep all my fruit cold.....it's the only way I'll eat it.

girlygurl -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/12/2010 9:48:37 PM)

yes

subwaythru -> RE: Do you like bananas? (7/13/2010 12:02:10 AM)

Bananas get rather pricey around here, with 59 cents per pound being a really special deal. They stay at about 79 cents a pound except for the organic ones, which are generally about a buck a pound.

I keep them in the freezer to use in smoothies, with whatever looks good, usually strawberries or raspberries or blueberries. The frozen state of the banana makes the smoothie very thick and like a milkshake. After I puree the fruit, I like to mix in whole flax seed which gives the smoothie a satisfying crunch and they are beneficial to one's health as well.
