Since we've had the banana discussion, I thought it only fair to discuss their near relative the plantain.

Anyone else a plantain lover? How do you use them?

I just make tostadas. Because I'm lazy. If I want plantain chips I buy them.

But a great thing to do if you have a deep fryer is to make empanadas de verde. Boil peeled green plantains until tender, then mash. Roll out between sheets of heavy plastic wrap or in a zip lock bag. Cut a circle, fill with queso blanco or a seasoned cooked ground beef mixture, fold the other half of the circle on top, seal and fry till crispy.

Tons of work and hellishly caloric but the best.

I have never purchased any, or cooked with them, but a coffee shop near by makes fried plantains. And OMG. I didnt think I would like them, but I crave them every time I ride by that place! I cant wait to grab some and get in the kitchen.

Wow all I've ever done is grill or saute them!! Now I want empanadas!

When I visited Puerto Rico, plantains were a frequent menu choice.  Even the roadside vendors had treats made from fried plantains, good stuff.

I love them. My favorite is a lasagna like dish with sauteed plantains instead of the noodles, picadillo as the meat, and a little parmesan on the top.

I've never used them. Kind of hard to get in Cleveland

I can get plantains on any street corner here so i never buy them to make them on my own.

I usually will get some fried plantains or empanadas

yes uncooked plaintains are yucky, just like potatoes you have to cook them. i have just one word though, mofongo. this is addictive.
