Ah, but then there's the issue of cheating academically vs cheating on a legal contract.  I would say that McInnis is more culpable.  Plus as a trained lawyer, he should have known better than a college student.

I'll agree with that.

It's getting worse for McInnis.  http://www.denverpost.com/election2010/ci_15509569

He evidently plagiarized as a congressman.  When he signed up as a consultant to earn his $300K, he represented that all his work would be original and his own words - he's admitting to using someone else to write the words, who McInnis is now desperately trying to throw under the bus.  So he's guilty of fraud as well, and the Colorado Bar may be looking at disciplining him.

He's changing his story daily.  The Denver Post has called for him to withdraw from his campaign, and let the other Republicans duke it out in the primary.  The guy's delusional if he thinks he can still be a viable candidate.  His campaign spokesman is claiming that the Dems are using this to draw attenmtion away from the bread and butter issues - "If I were Speaker Carroll and I had the legislative record that he had in terms of raising taxes and killing jobs, I'd want to change the subject too," he said - my guess is that McInnis will tough it out for a week or two and see oif the hubbub dies down.

Good job of investigative reporting on the Post's part.

If the quotes at the end of the article is all theyve got, it falls far short of plagiarism.

And where did you read that the bar may be looking at disciplining him?

From the end of the article: McInnis, a former congressman and a lawyer on leave from Hogan Lovells (formerly Hogan & Hartson), could face discipline from the Colorado Bar, said legal ethics professor Rebecca Aviel at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct prohibit "dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation." "The rule covers attorney conduct even when it does not pertain to a client or particular case," she said, noting that the rules are "under enforced."

And your contention about the plagiarism case being weak - I'd agree with you except that McInnis himself has not taken that stance.  IOW, he doesn't think that argument stands a chance.

We read it differently. "Could face discipline" doesnt say that discipline is being considered, it says that they could have grounds to consider it.

Okay.  I can agree with that.  I expect that it will be considered, even if fleetingly.  But you're correct in that that's conjecture on my part and not explicitly stated in the article.

The plagiarism of Scott McInnis proves he lacks character and is not qualified or suitable to be a governor or senator.

If you're Scott McInnis, you plagiarize and blame it on a staffer.

Or let a staffer write it and don't check it.

Looks like a sweetheart deal to me, and not a well done one at that.

No, the article mentioned several areas including one part that was FOUR pages long.

As soon as Biden is impeached I'll support any efforts you make to stop SI.

Brain, that's just a part of it.  it shows dishonesty and laziness.  But the more serious issue is that he was paid explicitly to write things himself.  He's coming up with various stories about staffers who did things, etc. (which does not fit considering that he has plagiarized other times as well), but by not meeting the terms of his contract while claiming that he did is fraud, which is much more consequential than plagiarism.  And his vague statement of "We'll make it right", when faced with a demand for the return of money obtained fraudulently makes him look ridiculous, not at all ethical or decisive.

The guy needs to step aside and the GOP can focus on getting an electable candidate.
