Employment, you know that thing that most people have to seek in order to live, those that are in employment, do you enjoy your job ?

Do you get anything out of it other than the wage you draw ?

What must employment have besides a wage to make the job worth your while doing it ?

If you had the situation where you did not have to work, would you work, or opt out ?

absolutely hate my job. It's depressing. I deal with one of two type of people all day long...greedy, selfish people or little old grieving ladies.

The only good thing about my job are the benefits. Even the wage isn't spectacular.

I'm now searching for a new one where it's more upbeat and I feel as if I'm being constructive, useful and actually helping people who are grateful and won't make me want to go postal.

If that means taking a paycut then I'm more then willing to do so.

If I didn't have to work that would be the ultimate preference. I need to find me a sugardaddy so I can laze around all day near the pool with a margarita handed to me by a tight poolboy.

Oh yeah...I'm looking forward to retirement in another oohhhhh....30 years. Sigh

I am not sure about others but i enjoy my work.  I have a career more so than a job or employment.  No i wouldn't do it for free, but i do work at times for the concept other than monetary compensation.  Just like this weekend, i went in to reorganize or office and close out files etc that i didn't have time to do in my normal business day.  I am salaried so i get paid the same amount no matter how much or little time i put in.   My boss however because she knew i came in this weekend has given me a couple personal days extra.

Since i enjoy my work i get a lot out of it, i get networking, socializing with people, getting to know people, STRESS lol, etc.  Any compensation has to have 1) people i like working with, 2) above-average compensation in salary, 3) major benefits, 4) flexibility (i.e., i couldn't work somewhere where you punched a time-clock), 5) appreciation, 6) understanding that while work is inportant having a life outside the office is just as important (i.e., family oriented), and 7) seeing everyone as people instead of robots who work. As for the work it must be challenging, busy and goal oriented -- in other words i couldn't do the same exact thing every day over and over.

I am lucky, i have always had the luxury of having option, and being headhunted,  and being able to interview the employer as much as they interview me as well as negotiate what i want.

quote:

If i did not have to work, i wouldn't work in the career i am now -- while i love it, the work i would choose to do is a lot less in monetary compensation than i can afford now.  So i would probably go into victim/witness in the prosecutor's office or i would spend more time fund raising for my favorite charities.

I'm only in my job for a bit of spare money and work experience. I get treated like crap by nearly everyone else there - I clean in a warehouse - and it's so frustrating to spend hours scrubbing tar off the toilet floor, then come back ten minutes later and somebody's just walked more of it through.

For me, a wage is pretty much all I need, as long as it's work I am physically able to do. I don't enjoy my job at all - like I said, I'm only doing it for the money, because my work is never appreciated. As for benefits I get...erm, I get a free cup of coffee. That's about it.

If I didn't have to work, of course I wouldn't! I could use that time volunteering, spending time with my friends or sewing...much more fun.

I love my job.  I make enough to keep ahead of the bills, which is good enough for me.

The fact that I am going in to my 5th year as a manager, and I have yet to have had a bad day at work, that is priceless!

I get to watch kids grow up, and I get to give hugs and an ear that I hope makes a difference to a few of them.  They have helped me through losing my mom and a divorce.

Thing about kids, if you can fake a smile long enough to get thru the door, they will put a real smile on your face.

My boss and I were talking about "if we won the lottery" one day.  I think I would keep working, but live where I want to live, drive what I want to drive, and vacation like crazy during the time we get off work.

But, I might move to Humboldt Co California and live on the side of a mountain too.  I doubt I will ever have to make that decision, since I found out you actually have to BUY A TICKET to win the lottery.

Damn the details!

I wouldn't go as far as saying "I love my job", because I would quit it in a skinny minute if I won big on the lottery or something like that.  But I do like my job.  I've had several jobs.  The one that was considered "a career" I didn't like, and often felt sorry for some people in some situations.  Guess my skin just isn't thick enough for that.  The jobs I do now I do like.  They are both people orientated jobs, and I like working with people.  One of them is in sales...and (for me, anyway) that can be a challenge and fun.

I love my job. I like that it allows me to think, reason and determine the best course of action without having to answer to anyone. I like that my clients welfare is in my hands and that I will do my best to make sure they are satisfied. I like that I can find the problem and kill it quickly without taking the steps I know bigger companies would suggest. I like the money I get which allows me to work on my schedule and take fewer calls if I wish. I like that I never work on weekends anymore. And that I can work from my home many times and that allows me to do more than one computer at a time. What I don't like is the lack of insurance. But I guess I could get a real people job on a part time basis while also doing the job I love now, just for the insurance. If there were more jobs around here I would do that.

I was fortunate to have a job for 33 years with at&t that not only paid very well, but I loved the work as well. I would be there today but the Wisconsin winters got longer each year as I got a little older. Climbing phone poles in a blizzard is a young mans job.

I love my job/career.  I actually feel that I have surpassed my career goals in my current job so keep pinching myself to see if it really is true.

What do I get out of my job besides my salary?  I am humbled that total strangers allow me into their lives for a short time and share their stories and difficulties with me.  I get to mentor and coach young staff just starting out in their careers and I am able to steer more experienced staff as they develop new skills and climb up the corporate ladder.

Besides my pay packet I have to like the people I work with, I have to smile when I get out of bed and get ready for work and I have to have reasons to laugh and people to laugh with when at work.

If I didn't have to work I would choose instead to do volunteer work, probably in a hospice or in the HIV/AIDS area.

I am my own boss.  I can take a day off if I want it.  Of course the same way I have all of my life, by making up the work I will miss.
I've been in the position of not having to work in the past.  I don't like it.  Thanks to the stock market we need to work at this point in our lives.

I don't know if I would go as far as saying I love my job..but it is a means to an end.  Even if I won the lottery tomorrow I'd still go to work tomorrow.
I've met some great people through my job..so yeah it is worth it.

Some parts of it I really do enjoy -- other parts.. well... *shrugs* not so much. Isn't that the way with many things, though? Even the things I -love- doing (like writing novels) has aspects that I really adore (like worldbuilding) and aspects that I'd rather not do if I didn't -have- to (like editing that 1st draft and cutting 25,000 words in the process).

Yes, I've gotten a lot more experience in understanding esoteric scientific research, and refined and honed my publishing/editing skills, as well as adding to my CV.

quote:

It depends on the time and place in my life. If I have enough other stuff going on to keep me intellectually challenged, I'm perfectly happy having my job do nothing more than pay the bills, and be no more intellectually challenging than flipping burgers. OTOH, if I have the opportunity to do what I love, earn a living wage at it, and progress in my chosen career, even at the cost of having to participate in a pretty extensive bureaucracy and belong to the Corporate Powers That Be to do it... well, it is, for the moment, a worthwhile trade-off.

quote:

If you had the situation where you did not have to work, would you work, or opt out ?

I'd work. I may not work full-time at what I'm doing now, but that's only because I'd balance things out a bit more between my job (medical writing/editing) and my "hobby of choice" (fiction writing/editing), since, at the moment, one of those pays the bills and the other doesn't, though I like both. That being said, ATM I find it highly unlikely that I would opt to leave where I am now, because I actually get a -lot- of satisfaction out of the current "day job".

I am in media sales. I used to LOVE it. Now I hate it.

The industry has changed so rapidly due to technology. Along with that, the expectations of companies are really out of whack now, because they are all suffering.

The competition is over the top; it is like a war zone out there in medialand.

I am still really good at what I do, but I no longer like where I can do it at. If I could move into another field/career and make the same money, I would do so immediately.

But that is the problem; once you have been doing something forever, no one wants to hire you for a new industry. They may have, especially in sales just a few years ago. But not now. Due to the high unemployment and tons of available talent out there, employers have a buyers market mentality.

Believe me, I have had a few companies go out of business or be acquired in the past two years resulting in periods of unemployment and it is not easy out there, even when you are talented and a proven entity.

Also, in sales, ageism runs rampant, so that is an issue as well.

I cant understand people who say they hate their jobs. It s such an insult. Because there are millions who would be quite happy to have your job or any job for that matter. People in employment are the lucky ones . They should be grateful.

I provide in home care for developmentally disabled adults. I enjoy helping others, not having a boss looking over my shoulder all the time, and my breaks not being scheduled. Things I hate about my job include the low hourly wage, no health insurance, the shift I work, and being expected to work on holidays. Working 3rd shift on weekends makes it impossible for Sir and I to attend munches and play parties together. Even when the holidays don't fall on weekends, family celebrations are scheduled on weekends because of other family members working during the week. If I won the lottery there's no way I would stay where I'm at now. I would keep working, but switch to PRN status (an on call worker) and go back to college. I'd probably stay in the same field, but I'd get a job where I didn't have to give up my holidays and social life.

I enjoy the actual work I do. I can't say I am enamored with the management at the company I work for. Those two statements have been true of every job and employer I have had in the last 30 years (four). Most managers are idiots. I figure that's why they were promoted to management so that they don't fuck up any of the actual work being done. I enjoy my current work more than the previous three jobs I had.

If I did not have to work I would not. I would be a full time musician.

Yes, I get to help people, and am privy to some interesting situations.

I wouldn't stay at my current job, because there is a lot of bullshit, and I'm not in charge. I'd find something else though, I wouldn't just loaf around.

I feel lucky to be able to work from home, make my own hours, take off at a moments notice if needed, and make a very decent living wage. Some of the people I talk to get on my nerves but for one to two dollars per minute, I can put up with some aggravation.

My jobs great, apart from the utter bitch of a boss I have.....

Seriously I would never work for anyone else ever again. If this business ever fails, having learned what I have from it, I shall just start over.

Upside - freedom to do what I think is right, the way I want to do it, and when and for how long
Downside - total responsibility (the buck stops here), but then thats not such a downside all in all.

I have to answer this from when I was working. Yes I loved it, I would have gladly worked minimum wage just because I loved it so much. Every morning I'd wake up all happy because I was going to work.

For the first time I had real confidence and real validation from complete strangers, it felt very good. I'm still very shy but back then I was nearly paralyzed by it until that job, it was very much a 'right' job for me.

If I had the money I'd open my own bookshop but it would have to be a lot of financial backing because independent bookshops no longer make much money. Doing it for sheer fun would be a blast though.
