I'm working in the North West (UK) at the moment, most people look like they have covered themselves in super glue and ram-raided sports direct. Fat folk in tracksuits is not only ironic, but also just wrong.

Oh, come on, theyre not that bad. If youre polite and respectful youll find theyre just people like you.

And if you can make friends with them they might even sell you your car stereo back for cheap.

Chav = Council House And Violent maybe, but is it just yet another identity like any other in society

Oh, god. As someone who lives in a council estate and has been beaten up, sexually assaulted, had dogs set upon them and gets general abuse on a near-daily basis by chavs, I can fully agree that yes, I do hate them.

What is a Chav?

Someone who lives in public housing. Of course the question is whether people become like this because they live in these horrible places and have no access to job training and/or jobs? Or do they choose to live like this so they can act like this?

http://www.chavtowns.co.uk/

Never have I ever came across a town as chavvy, horrible and bitter as St Helens. They do everything in their power to try and be scouse, and fail miserably due to their downright disgraceful accent and their awful dress sense. Dirty Kappa trainers, Gola Trackies, Mckensie, Henleys, Hi-Tech. Name any awful make, I can guarantee I have seen it in St Helens. They absolutely despise us scousers, so they say in their own small, unknown town, but once in Liverpool, they walk round with their heads down scared to say a word. I can honestly say, they are the biggest flappers in the world, and only act hard when in a big group in their own town.
Complete and utter scum of the earth, with the biggest chip on their shoulder about scousers. The place should seriously be nuked.

This really helped sort things out.

I am so glad we kicked your ass.

A chav isn't just a person who lives in public housing.
A stereotypical one will have no job and engages in antisocial and loutish behaviour, drinks a lot, and spends most of their time blasting crappy R n B out of their cheap cars. The females tend to end up pregnant by 15 and are riddled with STDs.

Incorrect, I'm afraid. Council-Housed Adult Vermin or whatever is a backronym. I think the original word is a traveller one but I don't remember the meaning.

'Chavs' are a subculture, that's all-sports gear and burberry print, hoods, scraped-back ponytails for the girls, dogs on chains, mainstream hip-hop, and cheap booze.

Lancing, West Sussex
A good lancing is what the infestation of chavs in this place deserve. With the exception of the northern parts of Lancing, this is a mecca for chavs. Think 13 year old single mothers with accents that would seem coarse in Romford. Think groups of kids in Reebok Classics and baseball caps booting footballs at passing cars and buses. This is a place where Burberry is the height of fashion. It’s full of Essex wannabees, the kind of scum that you wouldn’t piss on if they were on fire. Argos gold is the Lancing bling. For a sound beating by some inbred freaks try the Farmers pub or risk venturing in to Tower road (second only to Najaf for scenes of urban destruction) or the delightful Mash Barn estate where peoples mothers are also their aunts. It may be only a rumour but apparently the US marines pulled out of Central Lancing due the downing of a Black Hawk by a stray football.

Yep, sums up my hometown about right.

The town where I went to school has multiple entries. They're a bit out of date, though-I can't find a mention of the crack-house/brothel deaths a few doors down from my relatively posh school...

Ahhh....sounds like what we fondly call "gang bangers".   Rap music blasting out of oversized speakers causing the windows to rattle, extra large jewelry on multiple chains worn round the neck and called "bling"..matching hoodies (sports suits with hoods) and a language that no one but themselves can understand, complete with hand gestures.

I've never lived where I had contact with these folks, they are more along the lines of a circus freak here...we see them on occassion, but they are so outnumbered it is they who are afraid.   I live in a very rural area, gun racks are standard equipment on all vehicles and they aren't just for decoration.

Sounds like the government needs to step in where you are and eradicate some vermin.

You'd scare the living daylights out of them Domi. Pretence is a key aspect of chavdom and I'd guess not a key aspect of your character.

I heard that 'chav' came from 'Cheltenham Average'.  I've never bothered to look into it, though.

Info for non-Brits, Cheltenham is in Essex and Essex residents have a reputation for being, well, unstylish.   E.g. an 'Essex Face Lift' is that pulled-up-to-the-top pony tail that seems to have become the last word in naff coiffure for women.

Imagining you in St Helens is about as difficult as imagining a mafioso in my local pub.

Though, the latter once happened, sort of.  About a year ago, I saw Stanley Tucci in there, drinking with some refined-looking English country types in tweed jackets.  I think it's just about the most incongruous sight I've ever seen.

You're not down with the kids enough, Peon-it's called the Croydon Facelift, because it was made popular by Kate Moss (who is from Croydon).

Peon, Cheltenham isn't in Essex, it's in Gloucestershire.(Says the essex girl)
And Essex doesn't have a reputation for being unstylish - but they do have the image of white stilletos and dancing around handbags.
Chav's comes from the romany word (as VC mentioned) and means a young person and it morphed into young people who are from a low income background who have all the expensive knock offs.

Yeah, and as VC said, it's the croyden facelift.
