MasterCord -> Ready, Shoot, Aim .... the Obama/Democratic legacy continues. (7/15/2010 7:19:01 AM)

Remember when an "indignant" Obama and an equally "indignant" Congress took the President of Toyota over the coals for their awful and horribly unsafe cars...the mantra being the usual Obama-speak drama about mean nasty corporate profits coming at the expense of helpless, dumb  American consumers innocently buying the cars......oh....the humanity!!!!! ....well.....YET AGAIN....Capt. Obama's S.S. INDIGNITY has run aground on the treacherous reefs of reality....were this President's continued defoliation not so embarassing and repugnant....it would be funny to watch....

Data Points to Driver Error in Toyota CrashesBy DAVID SCHEPP

Federal investigators looking into reports of unintended acceleration in Toyota Motor (TM) vehicles have found little evidence of an electronic source for the problem, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

In analyzing dozens of data recorders in Toyota vehicles involved in accidents, the Department of Transportation instead found that at time of the crashes, the vehicles' throttles were wide open and the brakes not applied, the newspaper reported Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.

That evidence suggests that owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles who reported their cars accelerated uncontrollably were mistakenly pressing down on the gas pedal rather than the brakes. Though the evidence doesn't exonerate Toyota from two known issues of the problem -- sticky gas pedals and bulky floor mats that may pin the accelerator to the floor, the Journal said.

Toyota has recalled nearly 7 million cars in the U.S. to fix those problems. The sticky pedal recall was also the source of a $16.4 million fine imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In imposing the fine, the maximum allowable under current law, regulators said Toyota dragged its feet in issuing a recall in January to fix the problem, which affects 2.3 million cars and trucks. The company paid the fine in April.

Federal Analysis

The data recorders examined by NHTSA were from cars of owners who reported their vehicles accelerated despite pressing down on the brake pedal and subsequently crashed. The data recorders analyzed by federal investigators were selected by NHTSA -- not Toyota, the Journal report noted.

NHTSA's findings are consistent with a 1989 government-sponsored study that blamed similar driver mistakes for a rash of sudden-acceleration reports involving Audi 5000 sedans, the Journal said. They also echo findings of a March incident in suburban Harrison, N.Y., involving a Prius hybrid, which the driver reported sped up uncontrollably before hitting a brick wall. Investigations by NHTSA and local police determined the accident was caused by driver error and resulted from the driver not applying the brakes during the incident.

NHTSA has received more than 3,000 complaints of sudden acceleration in Toyotas, some dating back to early last decade, according to a report the agency compiled in March. The incidents include 75 fatal crashes involving 93 deaths, the Journal said.

NHTSA hasn't yet released its findings looking into the Toyota matter and declined comment

So....it wasn't all Toyota.....yes...they had some issues....but they were not responsible for the highway Armageddon .....we have seen the enemy...and it is us.

Look at the good side Obamites....no doubt the Chief Political Lemons to Lemonade Maker, will now appear with his trademark teleprompter and announce that this is the very reason we need to allow unlimited immigration because we need these good drivers...given Americans have so much difficulty telling an accelerator from a brake pedal. The immigrants, experienced in the maniacal driving common to Mexico City, Nogales, Nairobi, Bogota and other such places...are coming here for all of our benefit. Yes siree. We need them to teach us how to drive.....especially in Arizona where good driving skills are essential to avoing colliding with  drug couriers - who are not coincidentally - armed to the teeth. Who better to teach us?  The best news is tohugh, that if you ARE caught using your accelerator as a brake pedal...a new Federal law will prevent you from being stopped. "We are not going to allow people to be "driving-skill" profiled.

.......what a country......

I love how you think this story is a negative about the Obama administration. It is of course the opposite.

Toyota announced a massive recall for a problem they had apparently known about for years.

Afterwards people with Toyota's not affected by the recall claimed to be experiencing the same problem as what got the cars recalled. NHTSA, people responsible for making the roads as safe as possible, investigates and finds driver action is the cause.

This will save Toyota untold millions in settlements. Toyota and its shareholders owe the US government a huge 'thank you.'

Let me ask you something Mastercard, when was the last time you mistakenly pressed down on the gas pedal instead of the brakes?

It happens all the time. 60 minutes mistakenly raped Audi over the same thing and that too was proven wrong.

Meanwhile Chuck U Schumer writes a letter to Steve Jobs about reception problems in the iPhone 4 that no one except the media is bitching about.

Musicmystery -> Republican approval hits bottom (7/15/2010 1:16:28 PM)

You'd think the facts would be enough. But no, everyday needs some new "evidence."

Something to consider: Yup, Obama's numbers are low (though far better than Reagan's at this point). Yup, approval of Congress is even lower.

And yet......approval rating for the Republican Party is lower still than even Congress.

Not exactly a winning strategy.

Well.....go up and meet with DOT and tell their analysts that you know this could not be possible.

As for accidentally hitting the accelerator instead of the brake...it happens frequently with people who drive with both feet.  Not only would some of them be riding the brake....but it increases the risk of hitting the wrong pedal. There are also those who think left-foot braking is the only way to drive and people who drive only with the right foot may often be on the wrong pedal and not realize it, thus thinking they are braking and instead accelerating and unsure why for a the few seconds it takes to have an accident.

http://www.wikilaw3k.org/forum/Cars-Transportation-Safety/What-39-s-so-bad-about-driving-with-both-feet-on-the-pedals-341259.htm

http://action.publicbroadcasting.net/cartalk/posts/list/2128877.page

http://overlawyered.com/2010/03/exorcising-toyota%E2%80%99s-demons/

....among many other examples.

So yes, it is very possible to hit the wrong pedal. Likely?  no...but possible enough to explain the majority of incidents/accidents?  Absolutely yes.

As for me, I can recall three times in 40 years of driving that I hit the accelerator intending to brake. In all 3 cases my foot was partly on both and I could feel the car accelerating...in all 3 cases I was sure I was on the brake for a few seconds and recall not understanding what was happening and pressed the "brake" harder.....then it hit me what was happening and I moved my foot further left.

So if there are (2006 estimated data) 202 to 240 million licensed drivers in this country it is not inconceivable that 1/100 of 1% of them had an unintended pressing of the wrong pedal, each year...using the smaller number of drivers that adds up to 20,200 instances per year (Domi....I didn't want you to have to strain your mind with calculating the numbers...) .....and given the Toyota problems reported were far less than that, the DOT information cited above makes sense. For 2008, there were 5,916

You might also consider that according to the stats released for 2008 model year vehicles by Consumer Reports:

"Toyota and Lexus models for 2008 had a much greater incidence of sudden, unintended acceleration than other brands, according to Consumer Reports’ analysis of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety complaints database. In our review of 2008 model-year data, Ford also stood out with a significant number of related complaints. Both automakers had a disproportionate number of occurrences for their market share, though the statistical likelihood of experiencing such events is low.

In analyzing all 5,916 reports on 2008 models, Consumer Reports’ Auto Test Center and Statistics Department identified 166 cases in which the complaint described sustained unintended acceleration that the driver found difficult or impossible to control. Such incidents prompted a related safety advisory focused on floor-mat entrapment issued by both NHTSA and Toyota in September, 2009.

"Ford also received a disproportionate number of sudden acceleration complaints, making up 28% of the incidents vs. its 16% share of the market, Consumer Reports found."

Consider that the same study showed that Toyota had 40% of the complaints. That is only a 12% difference. (Domi....40% - 28% = 12%) Anyone see Ford hauled in front of the Congress or assailed by Obama?

MAYBE......the attack on Toyota was political....?  ....orchestrated perhaps by the UAW......?  Ford is a UAW-organized plant....Toyota is non union.

Think it's a coincidence that in June of this year, the UAW  - according to the NY TIMES article by Nick Bunkley on June 22 of this year.......quote...

"The union has been trying, and failing, to organize workers at Toyota for almost as long as the company has had assembly plants in this country. But now Bob King, the union’s new leader, says Toyota is vulnerable because of its safety problems and recalls. "

....hmmmmmmmmmm

Let's see...Obama & Co. went to their knees for the UAW....to the point of even writing a provision in the so-called "health-care" bill to allow union members to bypass provisions of the law that the rest of us are stuck with.....the Dems need every vote they can find to avoid the coming massacre....so...why not drag the anti-UAW Toyota in front of the cameras and Congress....help Bob King score some organizing points....despite the fact that "union" Ford had identical problems whose quantity and severity was in the very same ballpark.

Sure.......no politics THERE...lol....

Hold on a second. You seem to be claiming there was no cause for the original recall.

If so you're misrepresenting the study. Notice how the article is specifically mentioning an electronic source? That's because people who definitely did not have cars with the mechanical defect Toyota recalled claimed to be having the same problem. I know this is true because one of the vehicles specifically studied by the NHTSA was a Prius and Prius was not part of the recall.

Toyota Recall in Europe: Official statement, January 29th

Toyota Motor Europe announced today the recall of 8 Toyota models in Europe, to solve a potential accelerator pedal issue. The involved models and production periods are as follows:
  • AYGO (Feb 2005 – Aug 2009)
  • iQ (Nov 2008 – Nov 2009)
  • Yaris (Nov 2005 – Sep 2009)
  • Auris (Oct 2006 – 5 Jan 2010)
  • Corolla (Oct 2006 – Dec 2009)
  • Verso (Feb 2009 – 5 Jan 2010)
  • Avensis (Nov 2008 – Dec 2009)
  • RAV4 (Nov 2005 – Nov 2009)
The precise number of involved units is still under investigation, but may reach up to 1.8 million vehicles.

  • Toyota’s recall of 2m vehicles in Europe isn’t doing much to clarify the chaos surrounding the unintended acceleration panic that is enveloping the company. Eight models are being removed from Europe’s roads, including Auris, Avensis, Aygo, Corolla, iQ, RAV4, Verso and Yaris.

The fact that two of these models (iQ and RAV4) are built exclusively in Japan (European Corollas are built in Japan and South Africa), seems to suggest that the problem is not limited to gas pedal assemblies supplied by CTS, which has been blamed for the US recall.

The other models are built in France (Yaris), Turkey (Auris, Verso), the Czech Republic (Aygo) and the UK (Avensis, Auris).
